President Joe Biden wanted the now-departed Afghan president to create the 'perception' that his government was capable of holding off the Taliban - an indication he knew it was only a matter of time before the US ally fell to the Islamic group even while reassuring Americans at home that it would not happen.
In the last phone call between Biden and his Afghan then-counterpart Ashraf Ghani, the American president said they needed to change perceptions of the Taliban's rapid advance 'whether it is true or not,' according to excerpts published on Tuesday.
Biden on Tuesday repeated his assertion that his team was caught flat-footed by the rapid Taliban takeover of the country.

It reveals that contrary to President Biden's message that he was surprised by how quickly the Taliban defeated the Afghan Army, President Biden already knew in July that the fight against the Taliban was going very badly and that defeat was rapidly approaching.

Trump was drawing down troops. So there was a plan and troops were actually leaving.
We also know from the Syrian troop drawdown that senior officials in State and other places lied about it. The lying about Syrian troop drawdown is egregious enough the diplomat should be brought up on capitol offenses. The diplomat violated one of Clausewitz's principles.

What if Ghani leaked it?
The useless Joe Biden told him to lie to 20 million Afghans and the world. The lie would be found out sooner rather than later. It would be found out almost immediately or less than 30 days at any rate.
When a person lies so big about a subject so publicly what happens to them?
Joe did not care. In the US, people would not remember that Joe asked someone else to take one for the team and lie like mother fucker.
Did Joe, Jake, Ned and others think that while they are transcribing the phone call that the Afghans at the other end were too stupid to transcribe it?
Did the Jake, Klain and Ned believe that a man who was humiliated by Biden and left countryless would not seek revenge merely by telling the truth?
Maybe a White House Staffer leaked it. Probably. But Ghani could have also leaked it. When you have to protect such a transparent lie of statecraft merely to help an officeholder, maybe you are in the wrong?
