CNN: Call between top US and Russian diplomats doesn't ratchet down Ukraine tensions

(CNN)Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov did not give an indication that Moscow will de-escalate from the border with Ukraine in a call with Secretary of State Antony Blinken Tuesday, a senior State Department official said following the latest diplomatic effort between the two sides amid the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The official said the phone conversation between the two top diplomats lasted about 30 minutes and they described the tone as "professional and fairly candid."

The call between Blinken and Lavrov came one day after a tense UN Security Council meeting where the US and Russia traded accusations over Moscow's escalations on the Ukrainian border, where Russia has massed thousands of troops.

  2. Let's put it this way. I have never known and loathed so many people in the US government,

I remember how hard it was to take Jen Psaki's clap trap, when she was State Dept Spox.

Now, we have Ned Price and John Kirby. I have never known nor loathed so many Spox at one time. I really should not know their names. Things should be going better, maybe their would be things occasionally I do not agree with, but it should not be this continuous train wreck, where I know the names of so many dissembling officials.

And Blinken. Blinken the Sec of State. Why are people into fantasy baseball, football and the rest. They should have stats on all the groupies and courtiers of presidential hopefuls and congress critters.

  3. Pure optics. Putin has no intention to work out a deal with Blinken, a fool.
Whatever deal is made will exclude the USA, Putin wants to drive a deep wedge between the USA and Germany.

  4. I cannot see Helmut Kohl doing this.

This shows a shift in politics. It has been in the making for 10 or 15 years. The German appeasers were always there, but now they have grown in number. Are they 30%? 40%? 50%?

One thing for certain is that Merkel and Schultz are in that group.
