Politico: Erdoğan warns Greece that Turkish missiles can reach Athens

'If you don’t stay calm, … a country like Turkey will not be a bystander,’ Turkey’s president says.

ATHENS — Turkey warned Greece that a missile could hit the Greek capital unless “you stay calm,” further escalating its rhetoric against Greece.

“Now we have started to make our own missiles,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said during a speech on Sunday in Samsun, in northern Turkey. “Of course, this production scares the Greeks. When you say ‘Tayfun,’ the Greek gets scared and say, ‘It will hit Athens.’ Well, of course it will.”

Tayfun, which is Turkish for “typhoon” is a short-range ballistic missile developed by Turkey. The missile, which was test-fired in October over the Black Sea and hit a target at a distance of about 560 kilometers, a range more than double that of the current missiles in Turkey’s arsenal.

The US needs to give Greece about a 100 Pershings.

Erdogan is my favorite Greek.

Edie needs to sit down with a host of "Who Do You Think You Are?" and just let it all out.

Some politician could dare Erdie to appear on "Who Do You Think You Are?"

More proof Pax Americana in the Mediterranean is ending. How does this end? Thousands of Americans in Turkey. American nukes in Turkey. Greece would need help from the US to stave off a bitter defeat. USA s over extended with Ukraine and Taiwan.

Not looking like peace is breaking out.

I think the only thing that has stopped Erdo from war so far is the russian invasion of Ukraine. But with the russians stuck in Ukraine he might be reconsidering. A quick war to score points might appeal to him.

Old rules no longer apply. The Democrat party is a fascist party. It will not take a long period of debate to attack Turkey, if DC decides it is in their best interest.

The next Turkish election is in June 2023. Unlike previous elections, there is a very good chance Erdogan will lose. He has been consistently trending down since the last election in 2018 and is now under 40% with multiple polls showing him lose in the second round against several different candidates. This is very different than previous elections which had him around 50% and winning the first round outright.

Threatening Greece and the Kurds are a time honored way to gin up more popularity with the Turkish public. So how much of this is noise, and how much represents a real desire to go to war again?

Nobody else in NATO will back the Turks, and Europe is increasingly seeing Erdogan and Turkey as a menace. The Turks have traditionally fielded a fine army, but the days when Turkey could fight Greece one-on-one without fear of intervention is probably over. It would not take too many EU or NATO countries to intervene to cause a Turkish defeat. So actual military actions would be a big risk. And every time Erdogan threatens Greece, he loses more credibility as a partner to European countries. This isn't the regime of the colonels any more with Greece not land connected to its other allies and EU members.

But this is very dangerous talk and Erdogan could easily miscalculate.
