The Guardian: Nato members may send troops to Ukraine, warns former alliance chief

Security guarantees and membership path needed at Nato summit to avoid escalation, says Anders Rasmussen

A group of Nato countries may be willing to put troops on the ground in Ukraine if member states including the US do not provide tangible security guarantees to Kyiv at the alliances’s summit in Vilnius, the former Nato secretary general Anders Rasmussen has said.

Rasmussen, who has been acting as official adviser to the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, on Ukraine’s place in a future European security architecture, has been touring Europe and Washington to gauge the shifting mood before the critical summit starts on 11 July.

  1. He didn't imply nato deployment. He said "A group of Nato countries may be willing to put troops on the ground in Ukraine if [nato doesn't]"

It would be a case of NATO members going to war independent of NATO, thus not triggering any article 5 clause. Basically Poland and Moldava throw themselves into the fight without upsetting the comfy west european docility that their politicians depend on.

  2. Zelenskiy's parrot says NATO members may send troops to Ukraine. Great. I don't believe there's even one NATO country whose population wants to send combat troops to Ukraine right now or in the medium term.

  6. There needs to be a fight. The Russians are hooligans. They blew up the dam.

If there had been a missile attack, we would have seen the video.

What happen was the Ruzzians planted charges and the raised the reservoir level for maximum pressure against the dam as it blew up.

Russians are now shooting rescue workers.

  7. British & US special forces are deployed in Ukraine. Line infantry & armoured units from any NATO nation being deployed in country will mean western European targets being shellacked by Russian missiles. Anybody who wants western armies deployed inside Ukraine is a moron. Any western leader who deploys forces inside Ukraine is a dangerous lunatic. The Rooskies defeated the whermact & that was a much bigger army than what Europe can field. Plus does Europe have enough ammunition for more than 4 or 5 days.?

No, but you all came up with the great idea or should we say fantasy that there is no Gender. Good luck in the future, because you are going to need all the luck you can get.

  14. I knew I was gonna see burning leopards at some point this month but what I'm really curious to see is if the challengers will be used. An absence of challenger tanks would indicate that the Khmelnitsky explosion likely was the rifled ammunition for them.

  15. That film shows two things

    1. Tanks being destroyed.... and by the configuration of the turrets, they definitely were not T90-T55 variations. So good assumption, they are Leopards or some other type of Western tank..

    B. After a year of war the Ukrainian soldiers still have not learned. Therefore, these are very inexperienced crews and may show that even in the premier units..... the battle tested guys are very few and far in-between. Why can this be said with certainty?

Look at the road march pattern they used.

    1. Ducks in a row, no left or right spread while moving
    2. Too close together even while moving in-line. Those tanks should have had at least 100 meters between them , not 100 feet.

These guys need to learn real quick. This is not Desert Storm.

You do not have control of the air,
You do not have superiority of Artillery fires
You do not control / dominate the intel space.

You have a parity situation or enemy dominated situation. Very dangerous and you need to be more careful.
