Citing Security Concerns U.K. Bars Huawei From Supplying 5G Equipment

Daily Mail: Huawei warns UK risks being left in the 'digital slow lane' and phone bills could RISE after ministers announced the Chinese tech giant is being kicked out of Britain's 5G network in massive U-turn amid national security concerns

* Government today announced Chinese tech giant Huawei will be banned from the UK's new 5G network
* It will be illegal for telecoms firms in Britain to buy Huawei 5G equipment from December 31 of this year
* Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said all Huawei 5G technology will then be stripped out of network by 2027
* Government had given Huawei the green light in January to help build the network amid security concerns
* US sanctions recently imposed on the firm prompted a reassessment of the company's role and today's U turn
* Decision to exclude Huawei from 5G network will mean completion of roll out delayed by two to three years

Huawei today warned Britain risks being left in the 'digital slow lane' and claimed mobile phone bills could rise after the UK Government announced the Chinese tech giant is being banned from the nation's 5G network.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said all of the firm's existing 5G technology will be stripped out by 2027 in a move which represents a major U-turn after the Government said in January that Huawei would be allowed to help build the infrastructure.

Huawei labelled the move 'disappointing' and said it was 'bad news for anyone in the UK with a mobile phone' as the company argued its future in Britain had become 'politicised'.

Pentagon Opposes FCC Decision to Let Company Share 5G GPS Spectrum

Reuters

Washington Examiner: Pentagon argues ‘hundreds of billions of dollars’ and national security at risk if FCC decision not overturned

Top Department of Defense officials appeared in person before the Senate Armed Services Committee Wednesday to call on the FCC to reverse its unanimous decision to allow the communications company Ligado to set up a 5G network that would disrupt GPS use by the military.

“We don’t want the warfighter to have to call an 800 number to report interference,” said Gen. Jay Raymond, Commander of U.S. Space Command, describing what the FCC prescribes as a solution if a GPS system used in a tank, airplane, or weapon fails.

WNU Editor: The Pentagon is very sure of itself that this decision to deploy this new 5G cellular network will use a spectrum that could potentially disrupt frequencies used for commercial and military Global Positioning System (GPS) signals. Apparently it would cost hundreds of billions to correct. On a side note. The sponsors and supporters for this FCC decision must have known this decision would cause a firestorm of protest. It was done this weekend at night with everyone's attention on the pandemic.

No One Knows Why The Pentagon Is Refusing To Give Up Their Wireless Spectrum To Companies Who Want To Build A 5G Network

5G wireless technology might replace older radios like this one operated by two airmen in 2013 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Brett Clashman

Politico: The Pentagon Is Sitting on a Chunk of Valuable Airwaves. Why?

Companies say they need the military’s wireless spectrum to build a 5G network. The military has other plans—and nobody is sure what they are.

As the Trump administration squares off with China’s Huawei over who will dominate the world’s next generation of wireless networks, another battle is emerging closer to home. And in this one, the force causing the most concern isn’t a shadowy Chinese firm, or even a company at all. It’s the Pentagon.

The fast new consumer and business network known as 5G, already being touted in Super Bowl ads, will require large new swaths of the airwaves. And for the companies building it out, the most coveted piece of that invisible real estate is the “mid-band,” a set of frequencies that can carry far more data than current cellphone signals.

U.K. Will Allow Huawei To Build Parts Of Britain’s 5G Network

The Telegraph: Huawei will be allowed to build parts of Britain’s 5G network

Huawei will be allowed to build parts of Britain’s 5G network, Boris Johnson has ruled.

The Chinese company will be given access to “non-core” parts of the network but will be banned from “sensitive locations” such as military or nuclear sites.

The decision comes amid warnings from the United States and Tory MPs that giving Huawei access to 5G could jeopardise transatlantic intelligence sharing.

On Tuesday the National Security Council, which comprises the Prime Minister, senior Cabinet ministers and representatives of the security services, decided to proceed with the Huawei deal even though it is a "high risk vendor" because its risks can be "safely managed".

Why 5G Is Important To The U.S. And Chinese Military

SCMP: Why 5G, a battleground for US and China, is also a fight for military supremacy

* Next-generation networks will be vital to future military operations, raising the stakes between those developing the technology
* It may be easier to hack 5G, but strategic motivations are also behind concerns of the United States, experts say

Apart from its tremendous commercial benefits, 5G – the fifth generation of mobile communication – is revolutionising military and security technology, which is partly why it has become a focal point in the United States’ efforts to contain China’s rise as a tech power and its allegations against Chinese companies.

The future landscape of warfare and cybersecurity could be fundamentally changed by 5G. But experts say 5G is more susceptible to hacking than previous networks, at a time of rising security concerns and US-China tensions on various interconnected fronts that include trade, influence in the Asia-Pacific region and technological rivalry.

These tensions provide the backdrop to controversy surrounding Huawei, the world’s largest telecoms equipment supplier.
