Malcolm Turnbull's audacious double dissolution gamble looked to have backfired spectacularly on Saturday night as voters walked away from the first-term Coalition government in droves, raising the chances of another hung parliament and turmoil in Coalition ranks.

Mr Turnbull's failure to secure a strong majority from voters represents a significant boost for Labor leader Bill Shorten, who campaigned strongly on the party's traditional strengths of health and education, ran a fierce scare campaign about privatising Medicare and advanced an ambitious plan to cut negative gearing and capital gains tax concessions.

Julia Gillard confirms she will not contest next parliamentary elections after losing Labor party leadership ballot to Kevin Rudd.

Australia's first female prime minister, Julia Gillard, has been sacked by her party just months before the next election and replaced by the man she ousted three years ago.

After an unprecedented day of political bloodletting in Canberra, Kevin Rudd beat Gillard in a ballot of MPs by a margin of 57 to 45 to become Labor party leader. It is only the second time a sitting Australian prime minister has been removed from their first term in office by their party; Rudd was the first.

Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard are on a collision course over the Labor leadership after the foreign minister resigned his post, setting the scene for a dramatic showdown in Canberra next week.

In a day of political events not seen since his overthrow as prime minister in 2010, Mr Rudd accused Ms Gillard of deserting him in the face of continual attacks on his integrity by a "number of faceless men" and frontbencher Simon Crean.

"I can only reluctantly conclude that she therefore shares these views," he told reporters called to a surprise press conference in Washington after 1am (US time) on Wednesday.
