France 24: Leader of Nigeria’s Boko Haram is dead, says rival militant Islamist group 

The Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) militant group said in an audio recording heard by Reuters on Sunday that Abubakar Shekau, leader of rival Nigerian militant Islamist group Boko Haram, was dead. 

Shekau died around May 18 after detonating an explosive device when he was pursued by ISWAP fighters following a battle, a person purporting to be ISWAP leader Abu Musab al-Barnawi said on the audio recording. 

“Abubakar Shekau, God has judged him by sending him to heaven,” he can be heard saying. 

Two people familiar with al-Barnawi told Reuters the voice on the recording was that of the ISWAP leader.

The leader of Nigerian militant group Boko Haram has been seriously injured after trying to kill himself to avoid capture by rival jihadists, two intelligence sources said. 

Abubakar Shekau was fighting ISIS-aligned militants from the Islamic State West Africa (ISWAP) in northern Nigeria when he was injured on Wednesday, the sources told AFP news agency today. 

The fighting occurred in Borno state, where ISWAP has become the dominant force in Nigeria's more than a decade-long jihadist insurgency.

Attack took place in village near Maiduguri, with assailants targeting farmers in rice fields 

At least 110 people have been killed in an attack on a village in north-east Nigeria blamed on the Boko Haram jihadist group, according to the UN humanitarian coordinator in the country. 

“At least 110 civilians were ruthlessly killed and many others were wounded in this attack,” Edward Kallon said in a statement after initial tolls indicated 43 and then at least 70 dead from the massacre on Saturday by suspected Boko Haram fighters.

At least 60 people are believed to have been killed in twin attacks in Borno state. Armed militants also attacked a UN humanitarian hub with rocket launchers, reportedly accusing them of being "non-believers."

Jihadists connected to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militant group killed at least 20 soldiers and 40 civilians over the weekend in twin attacks in the restive northeast Nigerian state of Borno, residents and security sources said.

Inhabitants of remote Goni Usmanti village told French news agency AFP that jihadists linked to IS shot 38 people in a raid on Saturday and set a truck ablaze killing an unknown number of passengers.

Dozens of militants clashed with soldiers and members of a government-backed militia in Monguno near Lake Chad and in Nganzai, just days after militants killed at least 69 people in a village raid in Gubio. ISWAP claimed the two Saturday attacks, and the Gubio attack.

Chadian army officials report military forces have killed about 1,000 Boko Haram extremists in an operation on the islands of Lake Chad.

In a video statement released late Thursday, Army spokesman Colonel Azem Bermandoa said the eight-day operation cleared the extremists from the islands in a vast area between Chad, Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon.

He said 52 Chadian army soldiers also were killed and nearly 200 others wounded during the operation.

The move follows a Boko Haram attack last month on a Bohoma army base. More than 92 soldiers were killed. Army officials called it the deadliest attack ever on the nation’s forces.

Boko Haram extremists have killed tens of thousands and forced millions from their homes during their more than decade-long insurgency.

Boko Haram killed 92 Chadian and 70 Nigerian soldiers in two separate terror attacks, officials said Tuesday.

Ninety-two soldiers were killed and 47 others injured when the insurgents attacked an army unit in Boma, a peninsula of Lake Chad, which borders Nigeria, local newspaper TchadInfo reported. President Idriss Deby Tuesday visited the site of the ambush to confirm the death toll, according to the report.

Across the border, in north-eastern Nigeria, dozens of soldiers were meanwhile feared dead after a similar ambush by Boko Haram, the defense ministry said Tuesday.

The Guardian: UK could boost military support to help Nigeria defeat Boko Haram

Jeremy Hunt believes deciding factor will be Nigerian army’s ‘willingness to work with us’.

Britain is considering stepping up its military efforts to help the Nigerian government defeat Boko Haram, following a rise in terrorist activity in the country’s north-east in the past year, Jeremy Hunt has said after a visit to the region.

The UK foreign secretary said on Wednesday that he will be discussing what more the British government can do in terms of aid and military support to combat the terrorist group, warning the crisis had the potential to trigger a humanitarian catastrophe on the scale of that in Yemen.

Britain provides £240m in aid to Nigeria, of which £100m goes to the north-east, making it the second-largest donor after the US, and giving the UK a sizeable stake in what happens in the region.

Nigeria's security forces have raided the offices of the country's Daily Trust newspaper and arrested two of its journalists over the paper's coverage of the armed group, Boko Haram.

A team of secret police, soldiers and civil defence paramilitary stormed the newspaper's office in the northern city of Maiduguri, detaining its northeast regional editor Uthman Abubakar and reporter Ibrahim Sawab, the newspaper said on Sunday.

Boko Haram Have Launched A Series Of Attacks In North-East Nigeria

Reuters: Hundreds flee Islamist attacks in northeast Nigeria to seek refuge in Maiduguri

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) - Hundreds of people in northeast Nigeria who fled a town targeted by militants linked with Islamic State have sought refuge in capital of Borno state, Reuters witnesses said on Saturday.

An uptick in attacks by Islamists and the resulting upheaval in the region comes in the run up to an election in which President Muhammadu Buhari will seek a second term. Security has become a campaign issue following a series of attacks.

A faction of Boko Haram, Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA), which split from the insurgency in 2016 claimed responsibility for an attack on a military base in Baga, a town in eastern Borno state, which the Nigerian army said took place on Wednesday evening.

The fight to control Baga - a strategic town as it borders Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon - forced hundreds to seek safety in Maiduguri, some 200 km (124 miles) to the south.

Islamic State claims responsibility for raid in ongoing insurgency in north-east

Islamic militants in Nigeria may have killed as many as 100 soldiers in an attack on a military base, according to media reports and security officials.

The reported death toll is among the highest since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in 2015 and comes as the country prepares for elections in three months.

The worst losses came when militants overran a military base in the village of Metele in the north-eastern state of Borno on Sunday.

The militants invaded a base holding more than 700 soldiers in Yobe state -- where they abducted over 100 girls from a school earlier this year -- in an hours-long onslaught Saturday night, a military source told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Fewer than 100 soldiers have returned following the attack, which took place just 24 hours after Boko Haram fighters ambushed a military convoy in neighbouring Borno state on Friday.

At least 31 people killed after twin suicide blasts hit northeastern part of the country, according to a local official.

At least 31 people have been killed in a twin suicide bomb attack by suspected Boko Haram fighters on a town in northeast Nigeria, according to local sources.

Two blasts ripped through the Damboa government area in Borno state on Saturday evening targeting people returning from celebrating the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Following the suicide bombings, the attackers fired rocket-propelled grenades into the crowds that had gathered at the scene of the blasts, driving the number of casualties higher.

Suicide Bombing Kills 50 In Nigeria

Despite government assurances that Boko Haram is nearly defeated within Nigeria, a recent suicide bombing that killed 50 people has been attributed to the Islamist militant group.

Yola, Nigeria—A suicide bomber killed at least 50 people at a mosque in northeastern Nigeria on Tuesday, the biggest mass killing this year in a region facing an insurgency by Islamist militant group Boko Haram.

Bayi Muhammad, a worshipper at the mosque in Mubi, said he only escaped the blast because he was late for early morning prayers.

The government and military have said numerous times since 2015 that Boko Haram's eight-year insurgency is almost defeated but the group continues to attack civilian and military targets.

Tuesday's bombing brings the number killed in 2017 to at least 278, according to calculations by Reuters. There was no claim of responsibility for the attack.

Abubakar Othman, a police spokesman in Adamawa state, said the death toll is at least 50 but "there could be more as those seriously injured could add to the figure."

Boko Haram Launches New Attacks In Nigeria

Reuters: Boko Haram make biggest raid on Nigeria's Maiduguri in 18 months

Boko Haram insurgents launched their biggest attack on the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri in 18 months on Wednesday night, the eve of a visit by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to war refugees sheltering there.

Police said that 14 people were killed before government troops beat back the raid.

Maiduguri is the center of the eight-year-old fight against Boko Haram, which has been trying to set up an Islamic caliphate in the northeast.

The fighters attacked the city's suburbs with anti-aircraft guns and several suicide bombers, said Damian Chukwu, police commissioner of Borno State, of which Maiduguri is the capital.

BBC: Boko Haram's Shekau says he is 'in good health' following claim of his death

The disputed leader of Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram has released a video message denying a claim by the military that he was killed or badly wounded in an air strike last month.

Abubakar Shekau appeared healthy in the video in which he spoke in Arabic, Hausa and the Kanuri language.

It is not clear when it was recorded.

Earlier this month, the Islamic State (IS) group - to which Boko Haram has pledged allegiance - announced that Shekau was being replaced as leader.

Nigerian military says it killed a number of the group's commanders in a strike during Friday prayers.

The Nigerian army claims to have "fatally wounded" the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, in an air strike targeting a meeting of the Islamist group's commanders.

Shekau and other senior militants had gathered for prayers on Friday when they were hit by what the Nigerian army called an "air force raid".

It said a number of commanders were confirmed dead, naming them as Abubakar Mubi, Malam Nuhu and Malam Hamman, and said Shekau was "believed to be fatally wounded on his shoulders".

Boko Haram Splits Over Naming of A New Leader

New York Times: Boko Haram Leader Speaks on YouTube, Deepening Signs of Split

DAKAR, Senegal — A new voice recording described by security experts as coming from the longtime leader of Boko Haram deepened speculation about a fracture in the militant group, which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and has terrorized Nigeria and its neighbors for years.

In the 10-minute recording uploaded to YouTube Wednesday night, the Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, referred to what appeared to be a split in Boko Haram over whether Muslims who live among nonbelievers are good Muslims whose lives deserve to be spared.

Several analysts said they were confident the recording was of Mr. Shekau’s voice.

The recording emerged hours after an Islamic State publication distributed on the internet referred to another Boko Haram figure, Abu Musab al-Barnawi, as “governor” of the group. Mr. al-Barnawi was formerly thought to be merely a spokesman. The new title suggested that perhaps he was running Boko Haram now.

The Islamic State militant group (ISIS) has reportedly announced a new leader for its West Africa branch, which is closely associated with the Nigerian extremist group Boko Haram.

Abu Musab al-Barnawi, who previously featured in a Boko Haram video in January 2015 as a spokesman for the militants, is featured in the latest edition of a purported ISIS news outlet called Al-Naba. The interview designates Al-Barnawi as the group’s new leader but does not mention the fate of Abubakar Shekau, who has led Boko Haram in recent years, the BBC reported.

Boko Haram launched an armed insurgency against the Nigerian government in 2009 and has killed tens of thousands of people since then, as well as displacing more than 2 million. Boko Haram Attacks Kill 32 Soldiers In Niger

Al Jazeera: Boko Haram attack in Niger 'kills 32 soldiers'

Attack kills 30 soldiers from Niger and two from Nigeria on countries' border near city of Bossa, Niger officials say.

Thirty soldiers from Niger and two Nigerian troops were killed in a Boko Haram attack on Niger's border with Nigeria, Niger's defence ministry said.

"On Friday, hundreds of assailants of Boko Haram attacked" the position of the army of Bosso, the ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

"The counter-offensive conducted early this morning helped to retake control of all the positions in the city of Bosso. The situation is under control", it added.

Since February 2015, Niger has been plagued by Boko Haram attacks in its southeast region.
