Colin Powell, the first black Secretary of State who helped formulate foreign policy under Presidents Clinton and Bush, died Monday morning at the age of 84 of complications from COVID. 

The Pentagon powerhouse who served in Vietnam and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was fully vaccinated when he passed away at Walter Reed Medical Center in Baltimore, according to his family. 

Powell is survived by his wife Alma and three children, Michael, Linda and Annemarie, and has a celebrated career that saw him rise up the military ranks after growing up in a Jamaican immigrant family in Harlem.

The Guardian/Reuters: Colin Powell endorses Joe Biden for US president

Ex-secretary of state and military leader during Bush presidencies becomes first major Republican to back Trump’s Democratic rival

Colin Powell endorsed Democratic former US vice-president Joe Biden on Sunday, becoming the first major Republican to publicly back Donald Trump’s rival ahead of November’s election.

Powell, who led the US military during the 1991 Gulf War in Iraq under Republican former President George HW Bush and later led the Department of State under President George W Bush, said Trump has “drifted away” from the US Constitution and posed a danger to the country and its democracy.

“I cannot in any way support President Trump this year,” Powell, who did not vote for the Republican president in 2016, told CNN. Asked if he would vote for Biden, he added: “I will be voting for him.”

Trump, who has been critical of the Iraq war, in a tweet called Powell “a real stiff”.

In a private email exchange last year leaked this week by hackers, former Secretary of State Colin Powell discussed Israel's nuclear weapons capability with a friend, saying the country has 200 warheads.

Though Israel is widely believed to have developed nukes decades ago, it has never declared itself to be a nuclear state. The existence of its weapons program is considered classified information by both the Israeli and U.S. governments.

Powell, a retired Army general who has served as White House national security adviser and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told The Associated Press on Friday through a spokeswoman he was referring to public estimates of Israel's nukes.

Former secretary of State Colin Powell labeled Donald Trump "a national disgrace" and "international pariah" in emails he sent to a former colleague in 2016.

The retired four-star general is the latest government official to have his emails hacked. Other leaked emails indicate "Hillary's mafia" had tried to drag him in to commenting about Clinton's email scandal, multiple sources reported late Tuesday.

Powell had claimed Clinton's "minions repeatedly said that they are making a mistake trying to drag me in, yet they still try. The media isn't fooled and she is getting crucified ... the differences are profound and they know it."

Former US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, was heckled during a live interview on CBS by a angry off-screen protester venting his ire over the Iraq war.

Powell was speaking on CBS This Morning about the Smithsonian’s new National Museum for African American History and Culture when a protester loudly interrupted the interview. Calling from off-set, the man shouted, “You know better, Colin Powell, as a black man in America...you dropped bombs on Iraq.”

Woodward Hints At Powell As Next SecDef -- Military.com

Legendary author and reporter Bob Woodward indicated that former JCS Chairman and Secretary of State Colin Powell might get the nod to replace Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense when Gates leaves in 2011.

“I’ve heard suggestions that [President Obama] might lean on Colin Powell,” Woodward said to Military.com during an exclusive interview behind the release of Obama’s Wars, his latest book. “Obama needs some good news in this war,” he added with the notion that persuading Powell to take the job would certainly be a good move in the eyes of most of the American public. Woodward also pointed out that the Powell Doctrine deals with the use of overwhelming force, which could mean Powell’s instincts might be to ask for even more troops in order to end the war faster and more definitively.

My Comment: It will a short stint as Secretary of Defense if Colin Powell decides to take the job. Democrat prospects do not look bright in 2010, and if the economy continues to be in the doldrums in 2012, President Obama's job may be at stake also.

Still .... the prospect of Colin Powell becoming Secretary of Defense is not far fetched. He publicly stated that he voted for President Obama in the last election, and his military background and credentials are impeccable. In addition .... if the Senate is in Republican hands after November .... I do not see his confirmation being blocked in view of his many contacts and relationships within the Republican establishment.
