U.S. Lawmakers Say Biological Weapons Could Target DNA And Food Supply

* US Rep Jason Crow warned that bio-weapons are being made that use a target's DNA to only kill that person during the Aspen Security Forum on Friday 

* The congressman said the development of the weapons is worrisome given the popularity of DNA testing services like 23andMe 

* 23andMe has stated that it does not sell off customer's private information, but the company is one of many that has provided information to police 

* In 2019, it was found that several Russian and Chinese labs were processing DNA tests for Americans through Medicare and Medicaid 

* Officials warned the bio-weapons could also target animals and disrupt food supplies around the globe 

A member of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee warned that bio-weapons are being made that use a target's DNA to only kill that person. 

Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum on Friday, US Rep Jason Crow of Colorado warned Americans to not be so cavalier about sharing their DNA with private companies due to the coming of the new type of weapon. 'You can actually take someone's DNA, take, you know, their medical profile and you can target a biological weapon that will kill that person or take them off the battlefield or make them inoperable,' Crow said.

Reuters: Exclusive: China gene firm providing worldwide COVID tests worked with Chinese military 

SYDNEY (Reuters) - BGI Group, the world’s largest genomics company, has worked with China’s military on research that ranges from mass testing for respiratory pathogens to brain science, a Reuters review of research, patent filings and other documents has found. 

The review, of more than 40 publicly available documents and research papers in Chinese and English, shows BGI’s links to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) include research with China’s top military supercomputing experts. 

The extent of those links has not previously been reported. BGI has sold millions of COVID-19 test kits outside China since the outbreak of the new coronavirus pandemic, including to Europe, Australia and the United States. 

Shares of BGI Genomics Co, the company’s subsidiary listed on the Shenzhen stock exchange, have doubled in price over the past 12 months, giving it a market value of about $9 billion.

U.S. Intelligence Officials Are Saying The Chinese Government Is Collecting Americans' DNA

CBS: U.S. intelligence officials say Chinese government is collecting Americans' DNA 

60 Minutes has learned Chinese company BGI Group, the largest biotech firm in the world, offered to build COVID labs in at least six states, and U.S. intelligence officials issued warnings not to share health data with BGI. See the story, Sunday on CBS. 

The largest biotech firm in the world wasted no time in offering to build and run COVID testing labs in Washington, contacting its governor right after the first major COVID outbreak in the U.S. occurred there. The Chinese company, the BGI Group, made the same offer to at least five other states, including New York and California, 60 Minutes has learned. 

This, along with other COVID testing offers by BGI, so worried Bill Evanina, then the country's top counterintelligence officer, that he authorized a rare public warning. "Foreign powers can collect, store and exploit biometric information from COVID tests" declared the notice. Evanina believes the Chinese are trying to collect Americans' DNA to win a race to control the world's biodata.
