UN Says A Record 6.9 Million People Are Internally Displaced In DR Congo

France 24: A record 6.9 million people are internally displaced in DR Congo, says UN

Escalating violence has pushed the number of people internally displaced within the Democratic Republic of Congo to a record 6.9 million, the United Nations said Monday.

The conflict between M23 rebels and militias loyal to the DRC's government has intensified in the eastern province of North Kivu since early October, particularly north of the provincial capital Goma.

The UN's International Organization for Migration said many people who have fled their homes but stayed within the DRC's borders desperately needed help to meet their basic needs.

U.N. Says M23 Rebels Massacred At Least 131 In Congo

Al Jazeera: M23 rebels killed at least 131 civilians in eastern DRC, UN says

Victims were ‘arbitrarily executed’ during a massacre in two villages in North Kivu in late November, a preliminary investigation has found. M23 rebels killed at least 131 civilians in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo late last month as part of a campaign of murder, rape, kidnapping and looting, the United Nations has said. Authorities in Kinshasa had earlier said more than 270 people were killed in the M23 attacks in North Kivu province. The group denied being behind the massacre, blaming “stray bullets” for the deaths of just eight civilians.

Al Jazeera: Kenya deploys hundreds of troops to regional force in eastern DRC

President Ruto is sending more than 900 military personnel to tackle armed groups in eastern DRC.

Kenyan President William Ruto says his country is sending more than 900 military personnel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to join a new regional force tasked with trying to calm deadly tensions fueled by armed groups.

Ruto on Wednesday called the mission “necessary and urgent” for regional security and said he and the DRC’s president had agreed on how Kenyan forces would work with Congolese and other forces on disarming rebels and peacekeeping in the country’s troubled east.

East Africa Leaders Meet To Discuss DR Congo Conflict

France 24: East Africa leaders meet on DR Congo conflict

Nairobi (AFP) – East African leaders met in Kenya on Monday to discuss the security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo's violence-torn east.

The meeting comes as heavy fighting revives decades-old animosities between Kinshasa and Kigali, with the DRC blaming neighbouring Rwanda for the recent resurgence of the M23 militia.

Rwanda has repeatedly denied backing the rebels, while both countries have accused each other of carrying out cross-border shelling.

After weeks of sabre-rattling, the leaders of six of the seven nations in the East African Community (EAC) met in the Kenyan capital Nairobi to discuss the way forward.

The World Wants Congo's Cobalt Deposits

New York Times: A Power Struggle Over Cobalt Rattles the Clean Energy Revolution

The quest for Congo’s cobalt, which is vital for electric vehicles and the worldwide push against climate change, is caught in an international cycle of exploitation, greed and gamesmanship.

KISANFU, Democratic Republic of Congo — Just up a red dirt road, across an expanse of tall, dew-soaked weeds, bulldozers are hollowing out a yawning new canyon that is central to the world’s urgent race against global warming.

For more than a decade, the vast expanse of untouched land was controlled by an American company. Now a Chinese mining conglomerate has bought it, and is racing to retrieve its buried treasure: millions of tons of cobalt.

At 73, Kyahile Mangi has lived here long enough to predict the path ahead. Once the blasting starts, the walls of mud-brick homes will crack. Chemicals will seep into the river where women do laundry and dishes while worrying about hippo attacks.

Soon a manager from the mine will announce that everyone needs to be relocated. “We know our ground is rich,” said Mr. Mangi, a village chief who also knows residents will share little of the mine’s wealth.

This wooded stretch of southeast Democratic Republic of Congo, called Kisanfu, holds one of the largest and purest untapped reserves of cobalt in the world. The gray metal, typically extracted from copper deposits, has historically been of secondary interest to miners. But demand is set to explode worldwide because it is used in electric-car batteries, helping them run longer without a charge.

Outsiders discovering — and exploiting — the natural resources of this impoverished Central African country are following a tired colonial-era pattern. The United States turned to Congo for uranium to help build the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and then spent decades, and billions of dollars, seeking to protect its mining interests here.

Now, with more than two-thirds of the world’s cobalt production coming from Congo, the country is once again taking center stage as major automakers commit to battling climate change by transitioning from gasoline-burning vehicles to battery-powered ones.

The new automobiles rely on a host of minerals and metals often not abundant in the United States or the oil-rich Middle East, which sustained the last energy era.

WNU Editor: Cobalt is not the only metal that is in high demand. With trillions about to spent on the "green revolution", there is a rush to buy metals.

This is also the only investment that I am involved in (besides real estate). When President Biden was elected last year with his anti-oil agenda, I positioned myself to own shares in major Canadian uranium companies and possession of silver bullion. These uranium hares are now priced-out for new buyers, but IMHO silver is still appetizing even though the premiums to buy physical silver are high.

Fighting Between Militia Groups And The Military In Eastern Congo

DW: Renewed fighting flares in eastern Congo

There are reports of renewed fighting between various militia groups and the military in eastern Congo.

It dampens hopes of an end to the long-simmering conflict in the region.

The Congolese army has reported that the March 23 Movement (M23) rebel group attacked villages in North Kivu province near its eastern border with Uganda.

The fighting at the beginning of the week cause some 11,000 people to flee across the border to Uganda, the UN said.

M23, which has been largely inactive since capturing swaths of territory during an insurrection in 2012 and 2013, denied it was involved in the fighting.

Is The U.S. Being Dragged Into Another African War?

The Nation: The Bewildering Search for the Islamic State in Congo

Will a Texas hedge fund drag the US into another dangerous quagmire?

In 2003, three American college friends set out for Uganda. As they traveled through the north of the country, they were so moved by the suffering caused by the conflict between the government and the warlord Joseph Kony that they started an NGO called Invisible Children to spread awareness about the crisis and raise money for relief projects. Their work eventually drew the attention of Shannon Sedgwick Davis, a young Texas lawyer and CEO of the Bridgeway Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Bridgeway Capital Management, a multibillion-dollar hedge fund with investments in oil, pharmaceuticals, and consumer products. For years, Davis had been troubled by the limitations of charity, which she likened to “putting Band-Aids on bullet holes.” In January 2009, she was nursing her 1-month-old second child when she read a report from Human Rights Watch, a Bridgeway grantee, about a series of massacres committed by Kony’s forces. Having fled Uganda, they’d stormed through a cluster of hamlets in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, abducting children and killing their parents. Davis was so outraged that she resolved to seek a new approach to Bridgeway’s work. Documenting atrocities would no longer be enough. The foundation would now endeavor to stop them, militarily.

DR Congo Declares A 'State Of Siege' In Two Provinces In The East As Violence From Armed Groups Worsens

France 24: DR Congo declares a 'state of siege' over worsening violence in east

The Democratic Republic of Congo announced a "state of siege" late Friday in two provinces in the east of the country wracked by violence from armed groups and civilian massacres.

"Taking into account the gravity of the situation... the president informed the cabinet of his decision to proclaim a state of siege in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri," said Patrick Muyaya.

He said details of what the measure would entail would be released publicly in the next few hours.

Under DRC's constitution, the president can declare either a state of emergency or a state of siege "if severe circumstances immediately threaten the independence or integrity of the national territory, or if they interrupt the regular functioning of institutions".

A Closer Look At The Arm Conflict In The Ituri Region Of D.R. Congo

AFP: With DR Congo's army into forest stronghold of killers

Ituri Storm: The name of an operation that DR Congo's armed forces have launched in a northeastern eastern province against a militia blamed for killing scores of civilians and forcing thousands from their homes.

An AFP photographer embedded with troops in Djugu district found that some 70 percent of villages that he passed through on a stretch of road several dozen kilometres (miles) long had been abandoned and many houses had been torched.

Ituri Storm -- "Zaruba ya Ituri" -- aims to carry the fight into the forest stronghold of a military-religious sect named the Cooperative for the Development of the Congo, or Codeco, recruited among the Lendu, an ethnic farming community.

According to official figures that are impossible to verify, the armed group has killed more than 160 people in Ituri province in June alone and forced about 300,000 civilians to flee.

Political Crisis In DR Congo On Who Is The Next President

CNN: Congo presidential runner-up rejects court ruling and declares himself president-elect

(CNN)Democratic Republic of Congo opposition leader Martin Fayulu rejected a court ruling Saturday that upheld his defeat in the country's presidential election, instead declaring himself president-elect.

"I am now considering myself as the sole legitimate President of the Democratic Republic of Congo," Fayulu said in a statement. "As such, I ask the Congolese people not to recognize any individual who would claim this authority illegitimately nor to obey any orders that would emanate from such a person."

Fayulu suffered defeat earlier this month when Congo's electoral commission announced that another opposition leader, Felix Tshisekedi, had won the December 30 vote.

However Fayulu -- as well as the country's Catholic Church -- rejected the election results, saying they did not reflect the data collected by observers.

The former oil executive had been widely expected to win the election, which was seen as a test of whether the Central African nation could transition into a democracy.

Most of the area's population has reportedly been displaced.

Voting in the 30 December presidential election was postponed in Yumbi because of violence.

The attacks had reportedly taken place on 16-18 December.

Congo's Opposition Candidate Wins A Surprise Victory In Presidential Race

BBC: DR Congo presidential election: Outcry as Tshisekedi named winner

Opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi has won DR Congo's presidential election, electoral officials say.

The announcement, made overnight, sparked accusations of an "electoral coup" from runner-up Martin Fayulu.

The Catholic Church said that the result did not match data collected by its election monitors.

The ruling party, whose candidate finished third, has not yet contested the result, prompting allegations of a power-sharing deal with Mr Tshisekedi.

It is an accusation Mr Tshisekedi's team denies.

Election results in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been postponed again and officials said they did not know when they would be ready.

Reuters: Congo cuts internet for second day to avert 'chaos' before poll results

KINSHASA (Reuters) - Democratic Republic of Congo’s government cut internet connections and SMS services across the country for a second straight day on Tuesday as the country nervously awaited results from the weekend’s chaotic presidential election.

Both the opposition and ruling coalition said on Monday they were on track to win after a turbulent election day on Sunday in which many Congolese were unable to vote due to an Ebola outbreak, conflict and logistical problems.

Barnabe Kikaya bin Karubi, a senior adviser to President Joseph Kabila, said internet and SMS services were cut to preserve public order after “fictitious results” began circulating on social media.

GOMA, DRC — Congolese troops began a military offensive in the eastern city of Beni on Saturday against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan rebel armed group blamed for an attack that killed 15 U.N. peacekeepers last month.

The operation is part of a joint effort by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda against the group after the suspected ADF attack on a base manned by Tanzanian peacekeeping troops.

That attack, which also killed five Congolese soldiers and wounded another 53 peacekeepers, came amid a rising wave of violence in the mineral-rich, ethnically volatile area.

Uganda Launches Air Strikes Against Uganda Islamist Rebels In DR Congo

Reuters: Ugandan army attacks rebel camps in eastern Congo

KAMPALA (Reuters) - The Ugandan army on Friday attacked camps in eastern Congo housing Ugandan Islamist rebels blamed for a raid this month that killed 14 United Nations peacekeepers, an army spokesman said.

The attack, carried out with air strikes and long range weapons from inside Uganda, is the first in a joint military operation by Congo and Ugandan armies against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

The attack followed intelligence sharing with Democratic Republic of the Congo that indicated ADF militants were planning “hostile activities” against Uganda, army (UPDF) spokesman Richard Karemire told Reuters.

“In a pre-emptive move this afternoon, UPDF conducted attacks. They are of a limited nature on camps in DRC,” he said.
