Sudan’s Leader In Egypt To Discuss Ethiopia’s Nile Dam Dispute

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly received his Sudanese counterpart Abdullah Hamdok in an official visit in Cairo on Thursday. 

Arab News: Dam issue with Ethiopia must be resolved, Sudan’s Hamdok says during Egypt visit 

 * Hamdok’s remarks were made during a joint press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly in Cairo 

 * Madbouly said Egypt is coordinating with Sudan to seek resolution to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam 

DUBAI: Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok said on Thursday that issues must be resolved and an agreement reached with Ethiopia regarding the years-long dispute over a massive dam that Addis Ababa is building on the Blue Nile. 

Hamdok’s remarks were made during a joint press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly in Cairo, where the Sudanese leader also stressed their support for Egypt’s urgency to resolve the crisis.

Egypt, Ethiopia And Sudan Make Draft Deal On Nile River Dispute

Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan have reached an initial deal on the filling and operation of what will be Africa's biggest hydro-electric dam.

The three nations agreed, following a meeting in Washington, that the mega dam on the River Nile should be filled in stages during the rainy season.

Ethiopia, which is building the dam, wants to start generating electricity as soon as possible.

But Egypt is concerned about its water supplies if it is filled too fast.

The Guardian: Egypt and Sudan in talks to defuse tensions over Ethiopian dam

Nile basin countries fear for their future water supplies as the Grand Renaissance hydroelectric project reaches completion.

A new round of high-level talks has started in Cairo between three Nile basin countries aimed at resolving disputes over Ethiopia’s controversial Grand Renaissance dam, which is set to become Africa’s biggest hydroelectric power plant.

Analysts fear that Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia could be drawn into conflict if the dispute is not resolved before the $5bn dam begins operating next year.

Officials from the US and the World Bank have joined ministers from the three countries for the two-day meeting amid escalating tensions over the dam – most notably the timetable for filling up a reservoir bigger than greater London.

Tensions Grow Between Egypt and Sudan/Ethiopia Over The Nile River

Reuters: Egypt Says It Does Not Want War as Tension Grows With Sudan

CAIRO (Reuters) - President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Monday Egypt is not conspiring against its neighbors and has no intention to fight, a reference to growing tension with Sudan.

Relations have deteriorated in recent weeks, including over a Sudan-Turkey naval agreement that angered Cairo and an ongoing dispute over a dam Ethiopia is building on the Nile river that runs through all three countries.

In the latest move, Sudan recalled its ambassador to Egypt without saying when he might be back.

"Let's always look for peace and development, our people need that. They don't need us arguing and entering conflict," Sisi said at an inauguration of new projects in the province of Monofeya.

Sudan Tribune: Sudan’s Bashir accuses Egypt of supporting Darfur rebel attack

May 23, 2017 (KHARTOUM) - The Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir Tuesday has accused Egypt of supporting the armed movements that recently entered Darfur from Libya and South Sudan.

On Friday, fierce clashes erupted in North and East Darfur between government forces and the Sudan Liberation Movement - Minni Minnawi (SLM-MM) and the SLM-Transitional Council, a splinter group from the SLM-Abdel Wahid.

The government says the rebels entered into the region from Libya and South Sudan where Khartoum claims they are based, while the armed movements say the government forces attacked their positions in North Darfur state.
