Emmanuel Macron says he will consult coup leaders on withdrawal after two months of defying their expulsion order 

France will withdraw its ambassador from Niger followed by the French military contingent in the next months, Emmanuel Macron has said in the aftermath of the coup in the west African country that ousted the pro-Paris president. 

The French president’s announcement appeared to end two months of defiance in which Paris’s ambassador had been kept in place in Niamey despite coup leaders ordering him to leave.

Reuters: France in Talks With Niger Officials Over Troops Withdrawal - Le Monde 

PARIS (Reuters) - France has started talks with some Niger army officials over withdrawing some troops from the African country following a coup in July, Le Monde reported on Tuesday. 

At this stage, neither the number of French soldiers involved nor the timing of their departure have been decided, Le Monde said, citing several unidentified French sources close to the matter. 

The talks are not being held with putsch leaders, but with regular army officials with whom France has long cooperated, the newspaper said.

Niger's military rulers, who seized control of the government in July, had given the French envoy to the country 48 hours to leave on Friday. 

France's ambassador to Niger is still in the coup-hit Sahel country despite an ultimatum from the new army leaders to leave his post, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday. August 28. During a major foreign policy speech to ambassadors gathered in Paris, Macron confirmed that French envoy Sylvain Itté was listening in from Niger's capital Niamey despite being given a 48-hour deadline to leave the country last Friday.
