U.S. Defense Secretary Esper Confirms The Death Of The Late al Qaeda Leader Osama bin Laden's Son Hamza bin Laden

CNN: US Defense Secretary Esper appears to confirm death of bin Laden's son

US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper appeared to confirm Wednesday that the late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's son Hamza bin Laden is dead.
"That's my understanding," Esper told Fox News in an interview when asked if Hamza bin Laden was dead.

Asked if the US had any role in his death, Esper responded: "I don't have the details on that. And if I did, I'm not sure how much I could share with you."

US officials told CNN last month that the US had assessed that Hazma Bin Laden was dead but provided few details.

Earlier this year, the US State Department called bin Laden, who was believed to be in his early 30s, an "emerging" leader in al Qaeda, offering a $1 million reward for information leading to his capture.

Osama Bin Laden's Son Hamza Bin Laden Speaks Out

Long War Journal: Hamza bin Laden warns of Shiite expansion in the Middle East

Al Qaeda’s propaganda arm, As Sahab, has released the latest episode in Hamza bin Laden’s lecture series on the history of Saudi Arabia. The series began in Aug. 2016, when the junior bin Laden called for the overthrow of the Saudi monarchy. Hamza has returned to criticize the Saudi royals several times since then.

Hamza uses the occasion to once again warn that the Shiites are expanding throughout the Middle East, including “toward the Two Holy Places,” meaning Saudi Arabia’s holy mosques. He accuses the Saudi government of being incapable of stopping this Iranian-led expansion and he calls upon Muslims to support the jihadists’ cause in the Arabian Peninsula.

Is Osama Bin Laden's Son Poised to Unify Terrorists Worldwide?

Believed to be 24 or 25 years old, Hamza is expected by experts to potentially become the next al-Qaeda leader. (Photo: YouTube screenshot)

Ali Soufan, Daily Beast: Bin Laden’s Son Is Poised to Unify Terrorists Worldwide

Hamza bin Laden isn’t just being prepared for a leadership role in his father’s organization. He’s now the figure best placed to reunify the global jihadi movement.

One day in early November 2001, on a hillside south of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden bade farewell to three of his young sons. In the shade of an olive tree, he handed each boy a misbaha—a set of prayer beads symbolizing the 99 names of God in classical Arabic—and instructed them to keep the faith. The scene was an emotional one. “It was as if we pulled out our livers and left them there,” one of the boys would later recall in a letter to his father. Having taken his leave, bin Laden disappeared into the mountains, bound for a familiar redoubt known as the Black Cave, or Tora Bora in the local Pashto dialect.

The three boys who received the prayer beads that day would face three very different destinies. One, Bakr (also known as Ladin), would distance himself from al-Qaeda, both geographically and ideologically. Another, Khalid, would die protecting his father at their compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in May 2011. The third, Hamza, would vanish for years before reemerging in 2015 as the most likely candidate to reunite a fractured jihadi movement and lead al-Qaeda to a future still more violent than its past.

Is Osama Bin Laden's Son Being Groomed To Be The Next Leader Of Al Qaeda?

Bin Laden hoped his son Hamza would eventually succeed him (file image)

The Independent: Hamza bin Laden: Could Osama's son be the future leader of al-Qaeda?

The younger Bin Laden appears in audio message calling on all Syrian jihadist groups to unite and 'liberate Palestine'

Osama bin Laden’s son and heir apparent has resurfaced in an audio message after many months of silence, prompting renewed speculation over the leadership of al-Qaeda.

Hamza bin Laden, understood to be 23 or 24 years old, was not found among the bodies after the 2011 CIA raid on the compound in Pakistan housing the world’s most-wanted terrorist.

His whereabouts now are unknown, but some experts believe he is being carefully stage-managed by al-Qaeda’s leadership to one day take over his father’s role.

In the undated message, released by the militant group’s media wing, the younger Bin Laden calls on all the jihadist groups of Syria to unite and use the country’s conflict as a springboard to “liberate Palestine”.
