Middle East Eye: Israel halted Ukraine Iron Dome sale to avoid 'crisis with Russia'  

Ukrainian officials reportedly 'disappointed' as Tel Aviv wary of riling up Russians in Syria 

Israel refused to provide Ukraine with batteries for its Iron Dome's short-range missile interceptor in order to avoid a crisis with Russia, according to Israeli news website Ynet. 

Before Russian troops began deploying to the country's Ukrainian border, Kyiv formerly asked Washington for surface-to-air missiles and to pressure Israel to sell it the Iron Dome. 

But Israel informed US officials during "informal talks" that it would not approve the sale to Ukraine as it risks harming ties with Russia. 

The date of the talks was not specified. Israel is wary of getting on the wrong side of Russia, a key ally to the government of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad.

Warzone/The Drive: The Iron Dome Air Defense System Is Heading To Guam  

The U.S. Army is sending Iron Dome to Guam amid discussions about how to improve the island's air and missile defenses in the face of Chinese threats. 

The U.S. Army is deploying one of two air defense batteries equipped with the Israeli-made Iron Dome system to Guam. The decision to send Iron Dome systems comes as the U.S. military continues to explore options to expand its air and missile defenses on this highly strategic island in the Pacific as part of broader efforts to deter China in the Indo-Pacific region. 

The latest versions of the Iron Dome system, which was originally designed to intercept incoming rockets and other artillery rounds, also have a demonstrated ability to shoot down small drones and low-flying cruise missiles. The 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command (AAMDC), which is based in Hawaii, announced the deployment, which it described as "temporary" and "experimental," earlier this week. Troops from the 2nd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, out of Fort Bliss, Texas, will operate the Iron Dome battery on Guam. Elements of the Army's 38th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, forward-deployed in Japan, will also support this deployment, which has been nicknamed Operation Iron Island.

Missile defense system enables Israel to protect civilians from Hamas rocket fire 

A Washington Post "analysis" piece raised eyebrows Friday after it explored the supposed downsides of the Iron Dome defense system, arguing it perpetuates the Israeli-Palestinian conflict because the Jewish state has "less incentive to find a political solution." 

The intercept system has prevented thousands of Hamas rockets from hitting their targets over the past decade, and it's again been successfully employed the past two weeks as the Islamist terrorist group has rained fire on Israel. But the piece by Yagil Levy fretted that because it enabled Israel to fire back with superior air strikes on Hamas-controlled Gaza, it may have the "perverse consequence" of perpetuating the conflict.

CNN: Israel's Iron Dome doesn't chase every rocket it sees 

(CNN)Over the last nine days, thousands of rockets have been fired from Gaza towards Israeli territory. And every day they've been met by missiles from Israel's Iron Dome defense system. 

"The Iron Dome Aerial Defense System has one purpose -- to intercept rockets mid-air before they can kill Israeli civilians. 

We will not apologize for saving lives," the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) tweeted on Tuesday. 

The Israeli military says those missiles intercept more than 90% of the rockets targeted. 

But the Iron Dome doesn't chase down every rocket. 

In fact, according to official IDF data, the system has destroyed fewer than half the rockets and mortars fired by Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Highly concerning new tactics aimed at overwhelming Iron Dome batteries are being employed by Palestinian militants. 

Palestinian militants have fired more than 1,050 rockets at cities and towns across Israel from the Gaza Strip in less than two days. The Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, have been able to knock down hundreds of them thanks to Iron Dome defense systems and their Tamir interceptors. However, the sheer volume of rockets has underscored the limitations of employing Iron Dome against continous mass saturation attacks, which is clearly the tactic at play during this recent burst of violence. 

It also points to how this reality incentivizes Israel's opponents to simply expand their arsenals in order to effectively penetrate Iron Dome defenses. The Al Qassam Brigades, the militant wing of the Palestinian group Hamas, as well as Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), have been the groups primarily responsible for these attacks, which include the largest rocket barrages aimed at central Israel ever. The rocket fire has prompted Israeli retaliatory air and artillery strikes, including a number of targeted killings of senior Palestinian militants.

Iron Dome is getting more updates after nearly a decade in service as the threat of improving rockets, missiles, small drones, and more grows.

Israel says that an upgraded version of its combat-proven Iron Dome defense system successfully knocked down all of the simulated targets it faced in a recent series of tests. Israeli officials say that the updates will ensure that the system, which entered service nearly a decade ago, will be able to engage "evolving threats in the region," which include terrorists armed with ever-improving rocket and missile capabilities, the growing danger posed by small unmanned aircraft, and more.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense announced that the tests had occurred on Jan. 12, 2020, but did not say when or where specifically they had taken place. The Directorate of Defense Research and Development and the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) conducted the testing program in cooperation with Iron Dome's manufacturer, Rafael. The Israel Defense Forces first declared that the defense system, which it had developed with significant assistance from the United States, was operational in March 2011.

This is part of Israel’s “Iron Dome” defense system. There appear to be at least two high speed guns out of view of the camera, maybe more. At least 50cal. or maybe 20mm for the range they are shooting. The white can in the foreground appears to be for close-in fire, in the event the longer range guns do not do the job. All this is radar/computer controlled, no human action except to turn it on. What we are seeing are real shoot-downs, rockets launched probably from Lebanon aimed at Tel Aviv or other populated targets. This is cutting-edge American technology.

The number of unintercepted rockets and Israeli fatalities sparked inquiry about the effectiveness of Iron Dome.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — After the weekend’s fighting between Hamas and the Israeli army, some Israelis have raised questions about the strength of their country’s missile defenses.

Over the course of the weekend, Hamas and Islamic Jihad launched nearly 700 rockets from Gaza at Israel, killing four people and injuring more than 200. According to Haaretz, of the 690 rockets launched from Gaza, Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted 240.

The number of unintercepted rockets and Israeli fatalities sparked inquiry about the effectiveness of Iron Dome, and whether Hamas and Islamic Jihad have found a way to thwart the system.

Hamas was quick to declare that it had achieved victory, overwhelming Israeli defenses with concentrated barrages of projectiles.

Jerusalem Post: Report: U.S. Army acquires two Iron Dome batteries

"The Iron Dome system provides the best value for the US military in terms of the timetable for its acquisition and deployment," the US report said.

The US Army will acquire two Iron Dome batteries by 2020 as well as consider the full adoption of the Indirect Fire Protection Capability Increment 2-Intercept, both systems developed by Israel, Inside Defense reported Wednesday.

The Iron Dome batteries will provide US ground forces an interim capability against unmanned air vehicles, mortars, rockets, artillery and cruise missiles.

Jerusalem Post: IDF deploys Iron Dome batteries in the south

The IDF deployed several Iron Dome batteries in southern Israel Thursday following a situational assessment, the military told The Jerusalem Post.

“The IDF is prepared for several scenarios and ready to defend the citizens of the State of Israel and its sovereignty,” the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said.

On Thursday, an IDF drone fired “a missile at a motorcycle” east of Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported, adding that while there were no injuries the motorcycle was destroyed.

The IDF has been carrying out strikes in the Gaza Strip against vehicles used by terrorist cells who launch incendiary aerial devices into Israel. The Hamas terrorist group in turn has launched mortar shells towards southern Israeli communities.

WNU Editor: Loren Thompson paints a very optimistic picture on the effectiveness of this system .... one that I have trouble believing. If a few artillery rounds are fired at Seoul .... this system may have success. But I do not think that North Korea .... if it starts firing artillery shells at Seoul .... would just fire a few rounds. They would unload everything they have, and by the time these defense systems start operating .... the city of Seoul would already be in chaos and on fire, and what would be intercepted would not make a difference in the end.

FOX News/SKY News: US brokering talks for Gulf states to buy Israeli anti-missile system as Iran defense

Bahrain and other Persian Gulf states are in negotiations to buy the Israeli-developed Iron Dome anti-missile system to defend against "a growing arsenal of Iranian missiles".

The Israeli weapon, which has reduced the effectiveness of rockets fired out of Gaza into Israel by about 90% would be bought through Raytheon and other American contractors who developed the Iron Dome with Israeli arms giant Rafael.

A deal for the entire Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait, would be worth tens, perhaps hundreds, of billions of dollars.

Jerusalem Post: Report: Israel offered Saudi Arabia use of its Iron Dome technology

Rocket defense system was offered for Saudis to secure its border with Yemen.

Arabic-language newspaper Rai al-Youm reported on Saturday that Israel has offered Saudi Arabia to use its Iron Dome anti-rocket technology.

The offer was made to the Kingdom to defend its border with Yemen that has come under numerous rocket attacks.

According to the report, the offer was made last week during meetings in Amman between the Saudis and the US ambassador to Jordan. A spokesman for the Jordanian government said that he was not aware of a meeting between the Saudis and the Israelis in Amman, the news outlet reported.

Saudi Arabia reportedly rejected the offer, according to the London based newspaper.

TEL AVIV — Rafael Ltd. is developing ship-based versions of Iron Dome, the system credited with intercepting nearly 90 percent of the thousands of Gaza-launched rockets designated as direct threats to the Israeli home front in last summer’s 50-day war.

The state-owned developer and prime contractor for Israel’s Iron Dome will unveil its maritime point defense concept at the annual Euronaval exhibition in Paris that starts Monday and runs through Nov. 1.

Dubbed C-Dome, Rafael said the system aims to defend offshore patrol vessels (OPVs), small Corvettes and other small ships against saturation attacks from a range of “current and future high performance threats.”

Incredible footage has emerged showing Israel's Iron Dome air defence system simultaneously shooting down 15 rockets fired by Palestinian militants.

The video clip, which was uploaded to YouTube by the pro-Israel group 'Sin', was filmed in an unknown location close to the Israeli border with Gaza.

It is believed that the militants who fired the rockets were attempting to beat the Iron Dome by launching multiple missiles in one short burst in the hope that at least one may make it through.
