A Libyan man accused of making the bomb which destroyed Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie 34 years ago is in United States custody, Scottish authorities have said. 

The US announced charges against Abu Agila Masud two years ago, alleging that he played a key role in the bombing on 21 December, 1988. 

The blast on board the Boeing 747 left 270 people dead. It is the deadliest terrorist incident to have taken place on British soil. 

All 259 passengers and crew on board the jumbo jet bound to New York from London died while another 11 people were killed in Lockerbie when wreckage destroyed their homes.

LONDON — Scottish and American prosecutors are asking the Libyan government for help tracking down two suspects in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, the terrorist attack that brought down Pan Am Flight 103, killing 270 people.

“The lord advocate and the U.S. attorney general have recently agreed that there is a proper basis in law in Scotland and the United States to entitle Scottish and U.S. investigators to treat two Libyans as suspects in the continuing investigation into the bombing of flight Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie,” a spokesman for Frank Mulholland, the lord advocate, or top prosecutor, for Scotland said in a statement on Thursday.

New Evidence In Lockerbie Bombing Points To Iran -- Al Jazeera

Al Jazeera gained access to confidential documents blaming an Iranian-funded group for the 1988 bombing.

Al Jazeera America today announced that the channel will air a new documentary, “Lockerbie: What Really Happened?,” providing evidence to support what many have suspected for years — that Iran was behind the Pan Am 103 atrocity over Lockerbie in 1988.

The revelations will be broadcast in an Al Jazeera America documentary to air on Tuesday, March 11th at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and repeats at midnight ET/9 p.m. PT on Tuesday and Sunday, March 16th at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

In December 1988, a bomb destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing 270 people. A Libyan citizen, Abdel Baset Mohamed Ali al-Megrahi, was eventually tried and found guilty of the largest case of mass murder in UK history. But Megrahi has always maintained his innocence and many serious commentators have continued to express doubts about this conviction.

Lockerbie Bombing: Services Mark 25th Anniversary -- BBC

Memorial services are to be held in the UK and the US to mark the 25th anniversary of the Lockerbie bombing in which 270 people were killed.

A wreath-laying and church service will be held in the south of Scotland town which was devastated when Pan Am flight 103 was blown from the skies in 1988.

A remembrance service is also being staged at Westminster Abbey in London.

In the US, a ceremony will take place at the memorial cairn in Arlington National Cemetery, near Washington DC.

The Lockerbie bombing remains the deadliest act of terrorism ever committed in the UK and until the attacks of 9/11 it was also responsible for the biggest single loss of American lives in such an attack.

The Boeing 747 was just over half an hour into its flight from London to New York when it exploded, seconds before 19:03 UK time, on 21 December 1988.

Lockerbie Bomber Release Linked To Arms Deal, According To Secret Letter -- The Telegraph

The release of the Lockerbie bomber was linked by the Government to a £400 million arms-export deal to Libya, according to secret correspondence obtained by The Sunday Telegraph.

An email sent by the then British ambassador in Tripoli details how a prisoner transfer agreement would be signed once Libya “fulfils its promise” to buy an air defence system.

The disclosure is embarrassing for members of the then Labour government, which always insisted that Abdelbaset al-Megrahi’s release was not linked to commercial deals.

The email, which contained a briefing on the UK’s relations with Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s regime, was sent on June 8 2008 by Sir Vincent Fean, the then UK ambassador, to Tony Blair’s private office, ahead of a visit soon after he stepped down as prime minister.

Mr Blair flew to Tripoli to meet Gaddafi on June 10, in a private jet provided by the dictator, one of at least six visits Mr Blair made to Libya after quitting Downing Street.

My Comment: Regular readers of this blog know that for years I have been a harsh critic on the reasons used by to then Labor Labor government to release the Lockerbie Bomber and return him back to Libya. To put it bluntly .... you do not release someone who was convicted for the murder of 200 people just because he is too sick to stay in jail unless there is a damn good reason. If the Telegraph report is true .... we are now getting a small hint on what those "unstated" reasons were.

British detectives investigating the Lockerbie bombing are to travel to Libya for the first time.

Under a deal sealed by David Cameron on his surprise visit to Tripoli yesterday, officers from the Dumfries and Galloway force in Scotland will travel to the Libyan capital next month.

The team of detectives hope to track down the masterminds behind Britain’s worst ever terrorist atrocity, in which 270 people died in 1988 after the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie.

The Maltese courts have been asked to gather fresh evidence connected to the 1988 Lockerbie disaster, The Times has learnt.

Hearings took place behind closed doors last week before Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit. Several Maltese witnesses were called to testify.

The court appears to be reviewing evidence connected to travel logistics but no further information could be obtained from Maltese or Scottish sources.

A Scottish MP has called for an inquiry into the conviction of the Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi after his grounds of appeal were published in full for the first time.

Libya’s post-Qaddafi leaders signaled new flexibility in prosecuting the Libyan perpetrators of the Lockerbie bombing and the killing of a London policewoman during the 1980s, telling a visiting British official that British investigators would soon be invited into the country to conduct inquiries, Britain said Thursday.

Both the United States and Britain have made clear they expect the new Libyan government to help find those responsible for the attacks, and the new Libyan leaders had been giving mixed signals about their intention to cooperate.

A statement issued Monday by a spokesman for Scotland’s lord advocate, Frank Mulholland, said Britain’s Foreign Office had been asked to relay the request to the Transitional National Council, Libya’s interim governing body after the overthrow of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.

My Comment: Regular readers of this blog know that from day that the British/Scottish governments made the decision to release the Lockerbie Bomber, I have been continuously foaming at the mouth over this unjust and immoral decision. Their reasons to release him made no sense then .... and with more and more documents now being released by the provisional government in Libya .... my worse fears on why this mass murderer was released are now being confirmed.

Libya: Lockerbie Bomber 'Flees Tripoli With Col Gaddafi' -- The Telegraph

Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, the only man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing, has fled Tripoli and his neighbours said they believed he had gone into hiding with Col Gaddafi.

Standing outside the smart modern two-storey villa belonging to Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi in the upmarket Hay Damascus suburb of Tripoli, they said he had not been seen since the rebels’ sudden advance on the capital.

Mr Megrahi, who is thought to have been treated with the most treatments available to keep his prostate cancer at bay for two years since he was released from prison in Scotland, was given his villa as a reward by the Gaddafi regime.

THE Scottish council charged with monitoring the Lockerbie bomber was last night attempting to track him down amid claims that Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi could have breached the terms of his licence.

A former Libyan intelligence agent, he is supposed to keep in regular contact with officials at East Renfrewshire Council, the local authority area where his family had a home while he was imprisoned in Scotland.

Families Of Lockerbie Bombing Victims Cheer Collapse Of Moammar Khadafy's Regime In Libya -- New York Daily News

Families of the Pan Am Flight 103 victims Sunday night were savoring a moment they had craved for more than 20 years.

With Moammar Khadafy's long reign in its final moments, relatives of the 259 people killed in the bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, celebrated his imminent fall.
"I never thought this day would come," said Susan Cohen, 73, whose 20-year-old daughter, Theodora, was killed in the 1988 act of terror ordered by the Libyan strongman.

"I expected to die with this tyrant still in power."

A REVOLUTIONARY new cancer treatment developed in London but not yet available in the UK has ­enabled the Lockerbie bomber to reach the second anniversary of his release from prison, it emerged yesterday.

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, 59, will today be surrounded by family and friends as he celebrates his freedom at home in Libya.

This is despite being given just three months to live when Scottish authorities released him on compassionate grounds due to his prostate cancer on August 20 2009.

Families of the 270 people who died because of the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie in 1988 have expressed outrage.

My Comment: If true .... this is unbelievable. Fortunately, the Americans have made it very clear to the Libyan rebels that they want him tried in an American court, even though the Scots are still in denial on their decision to release him.
