U.S. Officials Cite Challenges To Capturing Joseph Kony -- CNN

Capturing and bringing to justice the leader of the Lord's Resistance Army, a group terrorizing a large portion of central Africa, will be a challenge, officials from the Obama administration told a Senate subcommittee on Tuesday.

Speaking to the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee on African affairs, officials on Tuesday said the task of stopping Joseph Kony is complicated by the region's vast and inhospitable terrain, along with the difficulty of coordinating the efforts of four partner nations' armies and gathering and sharing intelligence.

My Comment: He is hiding in an area that is the size of California .... and heavily wooded at that. The U.S. simply does not have enough boots on the ground to make a difference .... our only hope is to train the government military forces in the region, and hope that a lucky break unfolds.

OBO, Central Africa Republic — One minute, as she told it, she was minding a field outside of a remote rural area in southeastern Central African Republic; the next, she had been captured by gunmen and handed off as a wife to one of Africa's most feared warlords.

Guinikpara Germaine was 14 at the time. For the next three years, she traveled alongside Joseph Kony, the cultish Ugandan rebel leader whose atrocities have sparked a transnational U.S.-backed manhunt in central Africa. They were always on the run, from forest to forest. She was privy to his mood swings, forced to withstand his cruel megalomania, and survived, scarred, to tell the tale.

Emmanuel Daba, in his 30s, was captured alongside Germaine in the same March 2008 raid. They were marched by night from their hometown into the Democratic Republic of Congo, where Kony's fighters, known as the Lord's Resistance Army, were based. Gradually, they began initiating Daba into the LRA's unique art of warfare: hit-and-run raids on unprotected civilians, forced conscriptions, and survival.

My Comment: It is amazing that this war criminal is still free to conduct the crimes that he is committing. But I do agree with the survivors that Kony's time will soon be up, courtesy of US Special Forces who are hunting him down right now.

If you logged onto Facebook at any point today, you may very well have found friends and others sharing “Kony 2012,” a 30-minute YouTube film on the Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony.

The nonprofit charity Invisible Children Inc. uploaded the video Monday to bring attention to Kony and the rebel group Lord’s Resistance Army, which has terrorized central Africa for several years. The YouTube video currently has more than 7 million views.

The hashtag #stopkony has been trending worldwide on Twitter.

Ugandan Rebels 'Prepare For War'

Uganda's rebel leader Joseph Kony is reportedly preparing a new offensive after refusing to sign a peace deal.

Diplomats say his Lord's Resistance Army is forcibly recruiting fresh fighters and acquiring new arms in neighbouring countries.

His fighters are reported to have attacked South Sudanese forces, killing 13 troops and seven civilians.

My Comment: The diamond trade is helping to fuel this war. Because of this money, a destitute population, numerous grievances, and a flood of weapons .... this civil war will go on for a long time. The Ugandan Government, while eager to stop this rebellion, simply do not have the resources to stamp it out.
