SKY News: Sinn Fein becomes biggest party in Northern Ireland after historic win 

Voters flocked to the polls to elect 90 new members of the Legislative Assembly, with Sinn Fein winning a lion's share of the seats. But in a system reliant on power-sharing with the unionists, the DUP has already indicated it could boycott the government. 

Sinn Fein has become the first nationalist party to win the most seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly in its 101-year history. 

Voters flocked to the polls to elect 90 new members of the Legislative Assembly, with Sinn Fein winning a lion's share of the seats. 

As counting concluded in the early hours of Sunday morning, the final results showed Sinn Fein with 27 seats, pushing the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which has 25, into second place. 

Michelle O'Neill, the party's vice president, is now set to become the country's first nationalist first minister.

VOA: Irish Prime Minister Warns Against Return to Violence in Northern Ireland 

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin observed the 23rd anniversary of an agreement that ended most of the three decades of sectarian violence over British rule in Northern Ireland Saturday by warning against a return to the prolonged unrest.

His warning came after at least 14 police officers were injured in clashes with protesters in Northern Ireland’s capital of Belfast Friday night, the eighth consecutive day of clashes between police and unionists and nationalists in the British province.

FOX News/AP: Northern Ireland leaders call for calm after night of rioting  

A total of 55 police officers have been injured over several nights of disorder, police said 

 Rioters set a hijacked bus on fire and hurled gasoline bombs at police in Belfast in at least the fourth night of serious violence in a week in Northern Ireland, where Brexit has unsettled an uneasy political balance. 

Youths threw projectiles and petrol bombs at police on Wednesday night in the Protestant Shankill Road area, while rioters lobbed bricks, fireworks and petrol bombs in both directions over the concrete "peace wall" separating the Shankill Road from a neighboring Irish nationalist area.

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has announced he will stand aside as leader of the party next year.

Mr Adams said he will ask the ard comhairle of the party to hold an extraordinary ardfheis next year to replace him as president.

He also confirmed he will not stand for re-election for the Dáil.

Mr Adams received a standing ovation as he confirmed his departure at the party’s ardfheis in the RDS in Dublin on Saturday night.

Mr Adams also confirmed Martin Ferris will not stand for re-election for the Dáil either.

The Guardian: DUP and Sinn Féin on course to dominate Northern Ireland assembly

Sinn Féin and Democratic Unionists appear to be neck and neck as results are declared in election that attracted high turnout

Sinn Féin is neck and neck with the Democratic Unionists in the race to become the biggest force in the next Northern Ireland assembly, although the pro-union party is still expected to emerge marginally on top.

With about a quarter of seats filled on Friday evening, the DUP were still slightly ahead of Sinn Féin with 28.08% of the first preference vote compared with the republican party’s increased share of 27.9%. The election has attracted a high turnout of almost 65%.

DUBLIN — The fractious power-sharing government in Northern Ireland effectively collapsed on Thursday as Peter Robinson, leader of the majority party, followed through on his threat to resign as the province’s chief executive. It was the latest chapter in a political crisis prompted by claims from the police that Irish Republican Army operatives were involved in the murder of a former member last month.

Mr. Robinson, who heads the pro-British Democratic Unionist Party, said all but one of his party’s members would follow him in stepping down from the Northern Ireland Assembly, the provincial parliament. The move came after other parties refused to vote to suspend assembly business pending an investigation into the allegations, as Mr. Robinson, who had been first minister of Northern Ireland, had demanded.

Gerry Adams has spent a night in a cell and today is again being questioned by detectives investigating the 1972 murder of Jean McConville.

The 65-year-old Sinn Fein president denies being involved in the execution of Mrs McConville - who was abducted and killed by the Provisional IRA and secretly buried on a beach in the Republic of Ireland.

At the age of 11 her son Michael McConville watched a gang of masked IRA terrorists smash down the door of his family's West Belfast home and demanded to see his mother.

My Comment: If there is one thing that I have learned about life is that you can never really keep a secret forever .... and if you want to excise your "demons" of the past you will need to acknowledge what you did and ask for atonement. There are a lot of people on both sides in Northern Ireland who are keeping a lot of secrets .... and because of that they are still trapped in the past when they should be living today and looking forward to tomorrow. As to Gerry Adams .... I do not know if he is guilty or not .... but as leader of Sinn Fein he should assume personal responsibility and use his authority and personal influence to bring the people who committed this crime to justice .... but .... for his own reasons .... he has chosen to not do this.

Fifteen years after a Northern Ireland peace deal was struck, rioters are back on Belfast’s streets, hurling pipe bombs and Molotov cocktails at police. Nico Hines on the violence—and why the tensions never left.

Nail bombs, water cannons, and Molotov cocktails have brought chaos to the streets of Belfast again, 15 years after a landmark peace deal to end Northern Ireland’s cycle of violence.

Protestant demonstrators, one of whom brandished a sword, clashed with rival groups and hurled missiles during four nights of rioting that injured at least 44 police officers and knocked one senior politician unconscious.

Joe Biden telephoned Northern Ireland’s leaders Monday to express U.S. concern at the outbreak of violence and to call for an end to attacks on police. Within hours, four blast bombs and a pipe bomb packed with nails had been launched at officers.

Northern Irish police fear the violence will soon become deadly, said Alan Burnside, a spokesman for the Police Federation for Northern Ireland. “Petrol bombs and pipe bombs are a dangerous precursor to shots being fired,” he said. More than 1,000 officers from other parts of Britain were being airlifted into the city on Monday to quell rioting that began over the weekend.

Twenty-nine police officers have been injured in rioting in Belfast following a loyalist protest over the union flag.

Officers fired six baton rounds and used water cannon during the 40th day of street protests.

The latest unrest began around 14:30 GMT, when loyalists and nationalists clashed at a sectarian interface at Short Strand, east of the city.

PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott said officers had used "exceptional courage" to bring the situation under control.

Demonstrators were passing the nationalist Short Strand area - after a 1,000-strong protest outside Belfast City Hall against the council's decision to restrict the flying of the Union flag - when the violence broke out.

Violent Demonstrations Injure Dozens Of Police In Northern Ireland -- CNN

Belfast, Northern Ireland (CNN) -- Petrol bombs, smoke canisters and hurled bricks have injured dozens of police during weeks of violence in Northern Ireland, officials said Sunday.

At least 52 officers have been wounded since pro-British protests erupted in the Northern Ireland city of Belfast last month, police said. Authorities have arrested 70 people in connection with the violence.

Tensions have been high since City Council members there voted a month ago to stop flying the Union Jack flag year-round, restricting it instead to certain days.

Politicians, clergy and community leaders were meeting Sunday afternoon to discuss ways of ending the unrest.

Dissident republicans may have opened a new front in their armed campaign – if so there will be frantic efforts to persuade loyalists not to retaliate.

Since a booby-trap bomb exploded underneath the car belonging to the Catholic police recruit Ronan Kerr in April 2011 most of the violence from republican terror groups has been directed at their own communities.

Since Kerr's death there has been one murder over the border in County Donegal and more than a dozen shootings, with all of the victims young Catholic males who were the targets of republican anti-drug vigilante attacks.

My Comment: What gives me hope that Northern Ireland's sectarian violence will not return is the universal condemnation from almost everyone in Northern Ireland against this murder. The key now is to arrest the perpetrators of this murder, and to bring them to justice.

The threat from Northern Ireland-related terrorism has been downgraded from substantial to moderate, meaning an attack is possible but unlikely, the Home Secretary has said.

Theresa May said the threat level to Great Britain is being reduced, but the threat to Northern Ireland remains at severe, meaning an attack there is highly likely.

The threat from international terrorism also remains substantial, meaning an attack is a strong possibility, she added.

In a written statement to MPs, Mrs May said: "Today the Security Service reduced the threat level to Great Britain from Northern Ireland-related terrorism from substantial to moderate.

"This means that a terrorist attack is possible, but not likely.

Fifteen police officers have been injured in a second night of serious disorder in Belfast.

Officers used water cannon and fired six baton rounds at the crowds as troubled flared last night.

Three officers were taken to hospital during trouble that saw rioters throw 15 petrol bombs at police lines in the Carlisle Circus area in the north of the city.

Rioters also hurled stones, bottles, fireworks and rocks and hijacked a van in Denmark Street before pushing it towards police lines.

The extent of the injuries sustained by the police officers taken to hospital is not yet known.

More Violence At Carlisle Circus, North Belfast -- BBC

Police have fired six baton rounds during further trouble in the Carlisle Circus area of north Belfast, where 47 police officers were injured during disturbances on Sunday.

Nine officers have been injured on Monday night, with three hospitalised.

Loyalists gathered in Denmark Street and nationalists on the Antrim Road. Petrol bombs, bricks, stones and fireworks have been thrown at police.

A van has also been hijacked and pushed into police lines.

Four water cannon have been deployed by police and at least one man has been arrested.

US Ruling Reopens Old 'Troubles' In Northern Ireland -- Christian Science Monitor

A Boston College research project meant to collect testimony about Troubles-era crimes may now be a political time-bomb for Northern Ireland, thanks to a federal appeals court ruling.

When Boston College launched its Belfast Project the aim was to create an insiders' oral history of Northern Ireland's so-called "Troubles" by collecting the testimonies of participants on all sides of the conflict. What no one expected was for history to rear up and become the present once more.

That is precisely what has now happened as a US federal appeals court has ruled that the researchers' right to free inquiry is overridden by the British state's right to investigate past crimes.

The British government is waiting to hear whether a U.S. appeals court will allow the release of interviews with former IRA members purportedly accusing Gerry Adams of running a secret death squad.

A court in Boston heard evidence from lawyers on both sides of a protracted battle over tapes from a Boston College oral history project which obtained testimonies from two convicted IRA members between 2001 and 2006.

Violence erupted on the streets of Belfast last night with petrol bombs and bricks launched at police ahead of the annual Orange parades.

Four officers were taken to hospital but none of their injuries were life-threatening, said the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). A further 18 officers were treated for minor injuries.

A bus was hijacked and driven at a police cordon but crashed a short distance away during the trouble in west Belfast.
