Oxfam Report Says World's Richest 1% Are 'Plundering' The Planet

Washington Post: World’s richest 1% pollute more than the poorest two-thirds, Oxfam says 

The world’s richest 1 percent generated as much carbon emissions as the poorest two-thirds in 2019, according to a new Oxfam report that examines the uber-wealthy’s lavish lifestyles and investments in heavily polluting industries. 

The report paints a grave portrait as climate experts and activists scramble to curtail global warming that is devastating vulnerable and often poor communities in Southeast Asia, East Africa and elsewhere. 

This month marked a long-dreaded milestone for the planet, when scientists recorded an average global temperature that was more than 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels on Friday.

CNBC: The richest 1% of people amassed almost two-thirds of new wealth created in the last two years, Oxfam says 

* Since 2020, the richest 1% of people have accumulated close to two-thirds of all new wealth created around the world, a new report from Oxfam says. 

* Taxes must be increased for the ultra-rich as a “strategic precondition to reducing inequality and resuscitating democracy,” Gabriela Bucher, executive director of Oxfam International said. 

Over the last two years, the richest 1% of people have accumulated close to two-thirds of all new wealth created around the world, a new report from Oxfam says. 

A total of $42 trillion in new wealth has been created since 2020, with $26 trillion, or 63%, of that being amassed by the top 1% of the ultra-rich, according to the report. 

The remaining 99% of the global population collected just $16 trillion of new wealth, the global poverty charity says. 

“A billionaire gained roughly $1.7 million for every $1 of new global wealth earned by a person in the bottom 90 percent,” the report, released as the World Economic Forum kicks off in Davos, Switzerland, reads.

Responding to news of the $4.5 billion pledge made by the G7 leaders to tackle global hunger, Max Lawson, Head of Inequality Policy at Oxfam said: 

“Faced with the worst hunger crisis in a generation, the G7 have simply failed to take the action that is needed. Many millions will face terrible hunger and starvation as a result.” 

“Instead of doing what is needed, the G7 are leaving millions to starve and cooking the planet.”

WNU Editor: Oxfam has a point. With the exception of the Russia - Ukraine war, this G7 summit ignored a number of global issues/crisis that need to be addressed right now. 

Inflation, food shortages and high prices, energy shortages and high prices, the general cost of living, unsustainable debt levels, and the breakdown of supply chains. The G7 was completely AWOL. To say that this two-day summit was a disappointment is an understatement.

Looming debt defaults by poor nations could roil the global economy and derail recovery efforts, Oxfam warns.

The world's poorest countries are on the brink of an unprecedented debt crisis with the likelihood of multibillion-dollar defaults that will cripple the global economy, Oxfam International warned on Wednesday, as it implored Group of 20 (G20) finance ministers to do more to avert an impending catastrophe for hundreds of millions of people.

Oxfam said action from the G20 - the world's wealthiest nations, whose finance ministers are set to meet this weekend - to stem the coronavirus economic calamity falls far short from what is needed.

Starvation looms from Afghanistan to Haiti as coronavirus restrictions wipe out incomes and cut food supplies

Millions of people are being pushed towards hunger by the coronavirus pandemic, which could end up killing more people through lack of food than from the illness itself, Oxfam has warned.

Closed borders, curfews and travel restrictions have disrupted food supplies and incomes in already fragile countries, forcing an extra million people closer to famine in Afghanistan and heightening the humanitarian disaster in Yemen, where two-thirds already live in hunger.

One million more people are facing famine in Afghanistan as a result of coronavirus, according to a report from the charity. The number of people on the brink of famine in the country rose sharply from 2.5 million last September to 3.5 million in May, the result of border closures and the economic downturn in neighbouring Iran that caused a drop in home remittances by overseas workers.

A new report by the charity says the 26 richest men and women in the world control a combined £1.1trillion – equal to everything owned by the bottom 50 per cent of all people.

But Oxfam was criticised for alleged flaws in its report and for pushing a hard-Left agenda that goes beyond its remit as a fundraising body.

Oxfam was scrambling on Sunday night to contain a growing crisis over claims of sexual misconduct by aid workers before a crunch meeting on Monday that could see the charity stripped of its government funding.

Amid anger from the government and the wider aid sector at revelations that Oxfam staff in Haiti paid prostitutes – possibly underage – for sex in 2011, the charity’s chair of trustees, Caroline Thomson, pledged to widen a review of its practices to include the Haiti allegations and admitted “anger and shame that behaviour like that ... happened in our organisation”.

Reuters: World's eight richest as wealthy as half humanity, Oxfam tells Davos

Just eight individuals, all men, own as much wealth as the poorest half of the world's population, Oxfam said on Monday in a report calling for action to curtail rewards for those at the top.

As decision makers and many of the super-rich gather for this week's World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos, the charity's report suggests the wealth gap is wider than ever, with new data for China and India indicating that the poorest half of the world owns less than previously estimated.

Oxfam, which described the gap as "obscene", said if the new data had been available before, it would have shown that in 2016 nine people owned the same as the 3.6 billion who make up the poorest half of humanity, rather than 62 estimated at the time.

In 2010, by comparison, it took the combined assets of the 43 richest people to equal the wealth of the poorest 50 percent, according to the latest calculations.

The six wealthiest countries in the world, which between them account for almost 60% of the global economy, host less than 9% of the world’s refugees, while poorer countries shoulder most of the burden, Oxfam has said.

According to a report released by the charity on Monday, the US, China, Japan, Germany, France and the UK, which together make up 56.6% of global GDP, between them host just 2.1 million refugees: 8.9% of the world’s total.

OXFAM: The World's 62 Richest Billionaires Have As Much Wealth As Half The World

The world's 62 richest billionaires have as much wealth as the bottom half of the world's population, according to a new report from Oxfam International.

The wealthiest have seen their net worth soar over the five years ending in 2015. Back in 2010, it took 388 mega-rich people to own as much as half the world.

And the Top 1% own more than everyone else combined -- a milestone reached in 2015, a year earlier than Oxfam had predicted.

Oxfam released its annual report ahead of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss city of Davos, a yearly gathering of political and financial leaders. The study draws from the Forbes annual list of billionaires and Credit Suisse's Global Wealth Databook.

WNU Editor: I am sceptical of Oxfam's numbers. Global wealth is over $200 trillion .... Who Owns What Of The $223 Trillion In Global Wealth (Zero hedge) .... 62 individuals do not own half of that (we have many billionaires in the world, but a trillionaire does not exist yet). But when one looks at the trend lines (see above graph) .... you cannot help but be shocked on how quickly this is all transforming.

85 Richest People Own As Much As Bottom Half Of Population, Report Says -- L.A. Times

The 85 richest people on Earth have the same amount of wealth as the bottom half of the population, according to a new report that highlights growing income inequality as political and business leaders gather for the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Those wealthy individuals are a small part of the richest 1% of the population, which combined owns about 46% of global wealth, according to the report from British humanitarian group Oxfam International.

The study found the richest 1% had $110 trillion in wealth -- 65 times the total wealth of the bottom half of the population.
That bottom half of the population owned about $1.7 trillion, or about 0.7% of the world's wealth. That's the same amount as owned by the 85 richest people, the report said.

The findings undermine democracy and make it more difficult to fight poverty, the report said.
