Politico: António Costa wins big in Portugal’s general election 

Socialist Party wins absolute majority, but far right makes gains. LISBON — Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa pulled off a stunning victory in Sunday’s general election, winning a third consecutive term with his Socialist Party securing an absolute majority in parliament. 

“This is a special night for me,” Costa told cheering supporters. 

“The Portuguese have confirmed that they want a Socialist Party government for the next four years … they want stability, certainty and security.” 

With almost all votes in, the Socialists (PS) had won 41.7 percent, ahead of the center-right Social Democratic Party (PSD) on 28 percent.

Portugal's incumbent Socialist Party has collected the most votes in a general election. Prime Minister Antonio Costa's chances in the election were boosted by the country's growing economy.

Prime Minister Antonio Costa's Socialists (PS) came out on top of parliamentary elections held Sunday in Portugal. The first forecasts showed his party expanded its number of mandates in the 230-seat parliament but fell short of winning an outright majority, meaning Costa will need to build a coalition government.

Costa declared victory, saying "we accept the task of ruling Portugal for the next four years with determination and responsibility."

A man who drove through raging wildfires in Portugal says luck was on his side after he filmed himself escaping the deadly blazes ravaging the region.

Wildfires have killed at least 39 people across Portugal and Spain as hundreds of blazes were fanned by strong winds caused by a hurricane, authorities said on Monday.

Thirty-five people - including a one-month-old baby - in Portugal have died and dozens have been injured, most of them firefighters, during fires raging in central and northern areas of the country.

Portugal’s Socialists approved a plan to join forces with three other parties and oust Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho’s administration, raising the prospect of a new government committed to speeding the reversal of spending cuts tied to the country’s international bailout.

Portuguese government bonds dropped on Monday after the Socialists said party leader Antonio Costa will “formalize” the commitments made by the other parties to back his new government and will present a motion in parliament to reject Coelho’s government program.

The Socialist-led program “is clearly less market-friendly than the one of the incumbent government,” analysts at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc in London, including Clement Mary-Dauphin, said.

Political turmoil in Portugal is threatening to re-ignite Europe's debt crisis after a year of relative calm.

Having won praise for taking tough measures to restore the financial health of the eurozone state, Portugal's government has been rocked this week by the resignation of two ministers who quit because of waning public support for its program of austerity.

Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho has refused to accept the resignation of his foreign minister, who heads a junior partner in the center-right coalition. But anxious investors sold stocks and bonds heavily Wednesday on fears that the government may collapse.

Portuguese media said two other ministers could follow their party leader in tendering their resignation Wednesday. New elections could delay economic reforms and prolong Portugal's dependence on bailout funds.
