RBC Ukraine: Drone flew over Putin's residence in Valdai: New details on oil depot attack in St. Petersburg
During the attack on the oil depot in St. Petersburg that happened tonight, one of the drones flew over the residence of the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Valdai, according to the source in the special services.
Earlier sources reported that the drone attack on the oil depot in the Leningrad region was a special operation of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU).
In particular, one of the drones flew over Valdai, where the estate of the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is located. In particular, this residence and the surrounding area are covered by air defense systems.

BBC: Ukraine war: Russian oil depot hit in Ukrainian drone attack
Fire has broken out over a large area of an oil storage depot in southern Russia after officials say it was hit by a Ukrainian drone.
Russian media say four oil tanks caught alight and the fire then spread over an area of 1,000 sq m (10,763sq ft). Russian authorities in the Bryansk region say no-one was hurt.
The Bryansk governor said the drone was intercepted near the town of Klintsy and its explosives then fell on the oil depot.
The drone strike is the second on Russian oil facilities in two days.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a passionate plea to leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, urging them not to allow Russia’s war in Ukraine to become “frozen.”
Speaking in person at the conference for the first time since Russia launched its full-scale invasion nearly two years ago, Zelensky said Ukraine had defied expectations in repelling Moscow’s forces for so long and that its allies “know what’s needed” to allow “progress on the ground,” which has been in short supply for many months.
At the start of Zelensky’s address, which he delivered in English, he said he understood many in the audience would be asking difficult questions: “When will the war end? Is the third world war possible? Is it time to negotiate with Putin?”

Newsweek: Ukraine Drone Targets Putin's Home Region for the First Time
A drone has targeted Russian President Vladimir Putin's home region, Leningrad, for the first time since full-scale war in Ukraine began, Russia said on Thursday.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that a drone was shot down over the Leningrad region overnight.
Putin was born in Leningrad, which changed its name to St. Petersburg in 1991. However, the region, or oblast, around the city retains its Soviet-era name.

Ukraine’s much-touted counteroffensive has now “completely failed” and its very statehood could soon suffer an irreparable blow, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the ‘Small Motherland – the Strength of Russia’ forum in Moscow on Tuesday.
Putin noted that the head of Ukraine’s negotiation team, which participated in peace talks with Russia in the early months of the conflict, had recently admitted that Kiev was at one point ready to reach an agreement with Moscow. However, after a visit by then-British prime minister Boris Johnson, the Ukrainian authorities were convinced to stop pursuing a deal with Russia and continue fighting.
“Are they not idiots?” Putin asked, adding that if Ukraine had simply ignored Johnson, then the fighting could be long over by now. “This just proves yet again that they are not independent people,” the Russian leader said.

WNU Editor: The Ukraine state that I grew up in certainly does not exist anymore, and it certainly will not exist when this war is finally over. What we will probably end up seeing is a country that will have lost about a third of its territory, and half of its population. The economy will certainly be crippled, and the state, or what remains of it, will owe the West trillions in loans for funding this war.

Newsweek: Putin's Chances of Winning Ukraine War Look Bright
Three scenarios for the war started by Vladimir Putin in Ukraine are envisaged by Philip Breedlove, the former Supreme Allied Commander Europe—and two of them involve a Russian victory.
"If we don't do anything different than we're doing now, eventually, Ukraine will lose because Russia has more people and depth than Ukraine does," he told Newsweek.
"If the West abandons Ukraine, it will fight valiantly but tens of thousands of more Ukrainians will die and eventually Russia will subjugate all of Ukraine which will once again be a Russian vassal."
But one path offers hope for Ukraine, according to Breedlove, who as NATO commander between 2013 and 2016 witnessed the consequences of Putin's annexation of Crimea in 2014 that preceded his full-scale invasion.

U.S. Wants To Use Seized Russian Assets As Reparation Bonds For Ukraine

As the US and the EU are struggling to keep writing cheques to Ukraine, a fallback plan is making its way: Kyiv could raise money by selling bonds backed by future claims for war damages against Moscow.
It would be better if Ukraine’s backers just gave it more cash, as the United Kingdom did last week. But elsewhere fatigue is setting in. US President Joe Biden has so far failed to persuade Congress to approve a new $61 billion package for Kyiv. Meanwhile, Hungary blocked the EU’s planned €50 billion in aid last month, although other member states are determined to find a way round the problem.
Efforts to seize Russia’s frozen assets are also making slow progress. Not only are lawyers arguing whether confiscation would be legal. Politicians wonder whether it would be wise, though they are actively exploring doing so, according to the Financial Times.

WNU Editor: I have heard of a lot of crazy financial deals and proposals in my life, but this one is by far one of the craziest.
The U.S. and Ukrainian proposal basically says it is permissible to use as collateral another country's assets (without their permission) to fund your own bonds and securities. But it gets even more crazier than that. Since no private lender is going to buy such "reparations bonds" whose assets have been stolen from another party, the solution is to then force Western central banks to buy them.
Here is an easy prediction. If implemented this will put the final nail in the coffin in the US dollar being used as the world's reserve currency.

In what must sound like music to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s ears, the military aid that the U.S. had been providing to Ukraine has currently been halted, White House National Security Council Coordinator John Kirby said during a press briefing on Jan. 11.
Further assistance depends on the decision of Congress, which must support an additional request for national security to receive more funding.
“The assistance that we provided has now ground to a halt,” Kirby said. “The attacks that the Russians are conducting are only increasing. And now, as I talked about earlier this week, they’re using North Korean ballistic missiles to do their dirty work. So, the — the need is acute right now, particularly in these winter months.”

Rishi Sunak has vowed that Ukraine "will never be alone" as the UK announced £2.5bn of military aid to Ukraine over the coming year.
It is the UK's largest annual commitment since Russia's full invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The PM made the announcement as he met President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv and signed the new agreement.
Mr Sunak said that the support was vital because if Vladimir Putin "wins in Ukraine, he will not stop there".
Officials said the package will provide Ukraine with long-range missiles, air defence and artillery shells. Some £200m will be spent on drones.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made the remarks to the Estonian government during a visit to raise support for the war effort
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not consider a cease-fire with Russia, claiming it would only help the invading military bolster its power.
Zelenskyy made the comments during a visit to Estonia meant to raise support for continued funding of the war effort.

ABC News: Hospitals In Ukraine Are Now Seeing A 30% Rise In Seriously Wounded Soldiers
ABC News: Hospital sees 30% rise in seriously wounded Ukrainian soldiers, says doctor
As many as 100 hurt soldiers arrive daily at a Dnipro hospital, a doctor said.
DNIPRO, Ukraine -- The number of heavily wounded soldiers being treated at one of Ukraine's largest trauma hospitals has risen by as much as 30% in the past few weeks, according to the chief doctor there.
Dr. Sergii Ryzhenko told ABC News that the Mechnikov Hospital in the city of Dnipro, a few hours' drive from the fighting, is now receiving between 40 and 100 seriously wounded men each day, with his team performing between 50 and 100 surgical operations in any 24-hour period.
Many of those procedures are amputations, he said.

..... However, anecdotal evidence of mounting Ukrainian casualties in the war was reinforced by claims made on Ukrainian television this weekend by the country's former prosecutor general.
Yuriy Lutsenko claimed that around 30,000 Ukrainian troops are now being killed or badly wounded per month and that the total casualty toll for wounded and killed in the war is around 500,000.
The expectation in Ukraine right now is that these casualty numbers are going to sky-rocket in the coming months. Russia is now enjoying a missile/drone/artillery fire-power advantage that is 10x to 15x more than what Ukraine can muster, and this gap is only growing as Western aid to Ukraine is drying up. And to make matters worse .... it looks like Russia has just launched a massive counteroffensive on the eastern front of the Donbas.
