Defense News: ‘Space Corps’ gets OK in House committee’s NDAA markup

WASHINGTON ― The House Armed Services Committee approved a new military branch for space early Thursday.

The panel unanimously adopted the measure by a voice vote after debating for less than an hour. It was offered by Strategic Forces Subommittee chairman Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., and Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., who first offered the idea of a sixth branch two years ago.

“So the Space Corps is as close as we could make it to the proposal that passed this committee overwhelmingly,” Cooper said.

These Are The Weapons That A U.S. Space Corps Will Need

Business Insider/We Are The Mighty: 4 insane but real weapons the Space Corps will need

Fighting in space isn't as easy as just spraying bullets and hoping for the best. As a matter of fact, in the vacuum of space and an arena without friction, you're really just asking for the worst. Even in a training exercise, bullets would go on forever in the absence of anything to slow them down, hitting god-knows-what and killing god-knows-whom and the next thing you know: Interstellar War.

These weapons will help solve that issue.

It's a proven fact that bullets will fire from a weapon, even in a vacuum. Modern ammo contains its own oxidizer, a chemical that triggers the explosive needed to fire a bullet. But this doesn't mean you should shoot things in space with bullets.

* President Donald Trump floated the idea of developing another service branch, the Space Force.
* Trump said the idea started as a joke, but then he decided it was "a great idea."
* "Space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air, and sea," said the president.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said his new national security strategy recognizes that space is a theater of war, and he floated the idea of creating a Space Force, a branch of the military that would operate outside of earth's atmosphere.

"Space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air, and sea," Trump told a an audience of service members at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. "We may even have a Space Force, develop another one, Space Force. We have the Air Force, we'll have the Space Force."

WNU Editor: Space is a critical battlefield not only for the U.S. .... but for every other country with a major military. And yes .... with time I will not be surprised if a sixth U.S. service branch will be establsihed that will only be focused on space.

President Trump Proposes Military Space Force

FOX News: Trump praises military, calls for 'Space Force' as new branch of armed forces

President Trump praised members of the military Tuesday, saying the administration will give them the “largest pay raise in over a decade,” while touting successes around the globe, and even suggesting the creation of a new military branch — the “Space Force.”

The president spoke to thousands of military men and women at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, Calif., Tuesday, following his visit to review border wall prototypes.

“I have a message for you straight from the heart of the American people, and you know what that is — we support you, we love you and we will always have your back like you have ours,” Trump said, also praising military spouses and families for their service.

U.S. Congress Supports The Establishment Of A U.S. Space Corp As The Sixth Branch Of The Armed Forces

The Independent: US planning to create 'Space Corps' as sixth branch of armed forces

Anger as opponents to move claim there was little time to protest against proposal.

The House Armed Services Committee has voted to create a US "Space Corps", which would become a new branch of the armed forces and incorporate the current space missions of the US Air Force.

If the US Space Corps goes ahead, it would be the first new military service in the country since 1947.

The move has caused consternation as committee members of the panel say they were only recently informed, giving them little time to protest against the proposal.

Michael Turner, a Republican representative for Ohio, said he first heard about the proposal last week, when it appeared before the subcommittee on strategic force.

“I chastised my staff and said, ‘How could I not know that this was happening?’ They said, ‘Well, they had a meeting about it and you missed it,’” Turner said. “A meeting is certainly not enough. Maybe we do need a space corps, but I think this bears more than just discussions in a subcommittee.
