Russia Has Completed Delivery Of 24 Su-35 Fighter Jets To China

The Diplomat: Russia Completes Delivery of 24 Su-35 Fighter Jets to China

China is the first foreign buyer of the Russian-made Su-35 fighter jet.

Russia has completed the delivery of 24 Sukhoi Su-35S (NATO reporting name: Flanker-E) multirole fighter aircraft destined for service in the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSVTS) told local media on April 16.

“In compliance with the contract, all the Su-35 planes have been delivered to the foreign customer,” FSVTS was quoted as saying by TASS news agency. A FSVTS official also confirmed the delivery of the fighter aircraft to China in a statement to IHS Jane’s on April 16. The official did not reveal when the last batch of aircraft was delivered.

In August 2018, the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) stated that all Su-35 aircraft would be delivered by year’s end. A first batch of four Su-35 fighter jets arrived at a flight training center of the PLAAF in Cangzhou City in Hebei province in northern China in December 2016. A second batch of 10 Su-35 fighter jets was delivered in December 2017.

China Central Television has released footage of the People's Liberation Army Air Force's training using its new Su-35 fighters, showing the planes taking off, flying in formation, engaging in breakneck maneuvers and attacking mock targets.

Su-35 Flight Demo At Russia's MAKS 2017 Airshow Outside Of Moscow Wows Everyone

Defense Tech: WATCH: Russia’s Su-35 Wows Crowds at MAKS and Beyond

Russia’s Su-35 fighter jet wowed crowds this week at the MAKS 2017 airshow outside Moscow, according to multiple reports on social media.

The twin-engine aircraft designed by Sukhoi carrying the NATO reporting name Flanker-E performed feats of aerial acrobatics that stunned even longtime aviation enthusiasts on social media.

“I mean, come on,” Stephen Trimble, aviation reporter and editor for Flightglobal’s Americas bureau, tweeted Thursday after seeing footage of the aircraft’s demonstration. “And people actually thought the F-35A display at Paris last month was impressive. This isn’t impressive. It’s unbelievable.”

Others described the maneuvers as “insane” and “against the laws of physics,” and said they’ll “make your head explode.”

The U.S. Air Force Fears This Russian Fighter Plane

Highlights at 1:30, 3:43, 4:07 and 5:15.

National Interest: The One Fighter Plane America's Military Doesn't Want to Fight

The maneuverability of the Su-35 makes it an unsurpassed dogfighter. However, future aerial clashes using the latest missiles (R-77s, Meteors, AIM-120s) could potentially take place over enormous ranges, while even short-range combat may involve all-aspect missiles like the AIM-9X and R-74 that don’t require pointing the aircraft at the target. Nonetheless, the Su-35’s speed (which contributes to a missile’s velocity) and large load-carrying abilities mean it can hold its own in beyond-visual-range combat. Meanwhile, the Flanker-E’s agility and electronic countermeasures may help it evade opposing missiles.

The more serious issue, though, is that we don’t know how effective stealth technology will be against a high-tech opponent. An F-35 stealth fighter that gets in a short-range duel with a Flanker-E will be in big trouble—but how good a chance does the faster, more-maneuverable Russian fighter have of detecting that F-35 and getting close to it in the first place?

Is Russia's MiG-35 Fulcrum-F Ready For 'Prime Time'

Dave Majumdar, National Interest: Russia's MiG-35 Fulcrum-F: Ready for Battle against America's F-22 or F-35?

The Mikoyan MiG-35 Fulcrum-F is set to enter testing in 2017 with deliveries to the Russian Aerospace Forces starting in 2018. Flight tests for the new advanced Fulcrum derivative—which were originally scheduled for this summer—have been pushed back due to production delays.

“Development work under contract with the Ministry of Defense on the MiG-35 is currently ongoing,” Vladimir Mikhailov, the head of United Aircraft Corporation’s (UAC) directorate of military aircraft, told the Moscow-based TASS news agency. “They are a little behind schedule because of some fault with enterprise cooperation delaying deliveries of components, but we can say that in general the problem is solved.”

UFO Over Paris? Unique Russian 4++ Gen Fighter To Debut At Paris Air Show -- RT

Russia Trails U.S. In Pursuit Of A Fifth-Generation Jet

Sukhoi Su-35 (Photo from Flight Global)

From UPI:

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Russia lags behind the United States in aerospace research and development. It has yet to produce decent competitors to America's two new, fifth-generation fighter jets, the Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) F-35 Lightning Joint Strike Fighter and the Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor.

The main Russian rivals to the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightnings are the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-35 (NATO designation Fulcrum F) and the Sukhoi Su-35 (NATO designation Flanker). The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-35 is an upgrade of the MiG-29M/M2 and the MiG-29OVT. Both are fourth-generation jets.
