FOX News: Air Force captain ready to lead first-of-its-kind trifecta of bombers over Super Bowl 

Three planes will originate from three bases to rejoin over the stadium during the national anthem 

Air Force Capt. Sarah Kociuba is ready to be Super Bowl flyover flight lead on Sunday, sailing her B-2 Spirit from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri over Raymond James Stadium in Florida during the national anthem. 

"It is very exciting, I am very humbled," Kociuba, call sign "Gucci," told FOX 13. 

"We are certainly doing our prep for it." 

This year’s formation is the first-of-its-kind trifecta with three bombers taking off from different parts of America and meeting up over the Gulf of Mexico outside of Tampa airspace.

Fans tuning in to watch Super Bowl LII, where the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles will face off to determine who is the best in the NFL, will also see a bit of history during the pre-game ceremonies. For the first time, the Air Force Heritage Flight, including a North American P-51 Mustang, will conduct the traditional flyover.

According to an Air Force release, the P-51 will be joined by two Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt close-air support planes and a Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon. This is not unusual for the Heritage Flight, which routinely flies older aircraft alongside those currently serving.

WNU Editor: The P-51 will be joined by two A-10s and an F-16. I have only seen parts of two NFL games this year (I usually see about a dozen games) .... the politicization of the NFL has turned me off on the game. But for this ....I will definitely watch the beginning of the game for this fly-over, and probably the end if the game is close.

Business Insider: Overseas troops won't be able to watch the NFL playoffs — and more — because of the government shutdown

* The federal government is currently in a partial shutdown.
* Due to the shutdown, the Department of Defense's Armed Forces Network is not operational.
* This means military personnel deployed overseas are at risk of not being able to see the NFL playoffs and other programming.

Deployed members of the US military rely on a few comforts while away from home — one of those being the ability to watch American sports on the Armed Forces Network (AFN).

However, for those troops hoping to catch the NFL playoffs on Sunday, there's a good chance they'll miss out.

Due to the government shutdown, AFN will not be operational to broadcast the NFC and AFC Championship games on Sunday — unless Congress can reach a deal before that time — since all nonessential services are scrapped during a shutdown. AFN is operated by the Department of Defense.

North Korea’s newest satellite passed over Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, just an hour after the the Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10 to win the Super Bowl 50 Sunday, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

"It passed almost directly overhead Silicon Valley, which is where I am and where the stadium is," tech watcher Martyn Williams said in an email to AP. "The pass happened at 8:26 p.m., after the game. I would put it down to nothing more than a coincidence, but an interesting one."

The Air Force jets will be protecting the game and enforcing an FAA established temporary flight restriction zone.

Armed Air Force fighter jets will be protecting Sunday's Super Bowl game from the skies above, working to ensure an FAA-established Temporary Flight Restriction for the area is upheld, service officials told Scout Warrior.

"They will go up and bastically patrol the skies to make sure there are no violators of the TFR (temporary flight restriction)," Maj. Katrina Andrews, Chief of Public Affairs for the 1st Air Force, Air Forces Northern, Tyndall AFB.

The skies above and around MetLife Stadium will be in a no-fly zone on Super Bowl Sunday.

The first level of defense will be provided by Black Hawk helicopters with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The unarmed helos will serve as the eyes in the sky.

And if a hostile aircraft enters restricted air space near MetLife stadium, New Jersey Air National Guard F-16s based in Atlantic City will be scrambled.

Colonel Brad Everman of the 177th Fighter Wing said his pilots have been training for months and are prepared to secure the skies above the big game.

More air marshals and behavioral detection officers, radiological detection teams and random baggage checks at transit hubs are among the security measures the federal Homeland Security Department will deploy in the next few days to help local police in New Jersey and New York secure the Super Bowl.

The game will be played at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey’s Meadowlands area just outside New York City. The stadium’s location near a major airport and busy commuter train lines presents security challenges. Unlike audiences for other championship games, spectators of Super Bowl XLVIII will rely heavily on mass transit.

Homeland Security officials say that federal agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation will deploy hundreds of employees to help New Jersey and New York police secure what’s been officially designated “an event of national significance.”
