New Images Of The U.K.'s Tempest Sixth-Generation Fighter Have Been Posted

The Aviationist: New Images Of The Tempest Sixth-Generation Aircraft Revealed During UK Industry Engagement Event

Development for the new Tempest sixth-generation fighter is moving on with some revolutionary concepts.
Team Tempest and the Royal Air Force recently held a virtual event to provide an update about the development opportunities of the new sixth generation aircraft to industry and government representatives from Northern Ireland, the first of a series of events to engage with industries across the UK.

Within the press release there is also some new renderings of the aircraft which, we have to note, is not in its final shape as it’s being designed “from the inside out” and the airframe’s exterior design may change to reflect changes in the internal systems.

WNU Editor: All of this looks impressive. But does the U.K. have the funds to develop this fighter? I have my doubts.

National Interest: Britain's Tempest Fighter Is Going To Leave The F-35 Far Behind

A sixth-generation fighter is coming.

Here's What You Need To Remember: The UK, France and Germany have all now proclaimed their intent to develop sixth-generation stealth jets and backed that up with initial investments. However, it will likely be a while before we can tell whether the respective governments can sustain the long-term financial outlays, international cooperation, and technically challenging development processes to produce Europe’s first stealth jet.

With a flourish of a silk curtain at the Farnborough Air Show on July 16, British defense secretary Gavin Williamson unveiled a full-scale model of the Tempest, the UK’s concept for a domestically built twin-engine stealth fighter to enter service in the 2030s. The Tempest will supposedly boast a laundry list of sixth-generation technologies such as being optionally-manned, mounting hypersonic or directed energy weapons, and capability to deploy and control drone swarms. However, it may also represent a Brexit-era gambit to revive defense cooperation with Germany and France.

The RAF Wants A Fighter That Is Better Than The F-35

The £100million Tempest stealth aircraft is being designed to replace the Royal Air Force's long-serving Typhoon, and will enter service in 2035

Daily Mail: RAF plans £100m fighter jet that can fly at more than 4,000mph and be controlled by virtual reality helmet

* The Tempest stealth aircraft is being designed to replace long-serving Typhoon
* The hypersonic £100million aircraft will be able to fly at more than Mach 5
* The aircraft will be able to fly unmanned and feature high-tech weaponry

The RAF is planning a fighter jet that can fly at more than 4,000mph and be controlled by virtual reality helmet.

The £100million Tempest stealth aircraft is being designed to replace the Royal Air Force's long-serving Typhoon, and will enter service in 2035.

The hypersonic aircraft will be able to fly at more than Mach 5, three times as fast as existing aircraft, as reported by the Daily Star.

The defence companies behind it – BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Leonardo's UK arm and MBDA – are due to present further proposals to ministers at the end of 2020.

U.K. Unveils Its Newest Fighter Jet To Be Known As The Tempest

The Guardian: UK unveils new Tempest fighter jet to replace Typhoon

Government to spend £2bn to develop aircraft between now and 2025

The defence secretary has unveiled plans for a new RAF fighter jet, the Tempest, which will eventually replace the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Speaking at the Farnborough airshow, Gavin Williamson unveiled a concept version of the sixth-generation fighter jet the Ministry of Defence (MoD) expects to emerge from its new combat air strategy, designed to maintain the UK’s status as a so-called “tier one” military power after Brexit.

“This is a strategy to keep control of the air, both at home and abroad, to remain a global leader in the sector,” Williamson said.

“We have been world leader in the combat air sector for a century, with an enviable array of skills and technology, and this strategy makes clear that we are determined to make sure it stays that way.”

He said he wanted the Tempest to be flying alongside the existing fleet of Typhoons and the US-made F-35s by 2035.
