I found an interesting article that tries to claim are success in destroying al-Qaeda has given rise to a new danger. Personally I find this line of reasoning ridiculous. It is the old tall poles challenge. When you attack the tall poles and remove these obstacles barring success to a challenge, you still face the next set of tall poles, which are naturally smaller obstacles than the previous set taken out. And when you take out those tall polls, you are still left with another, even shorter set of poles to deal with.

My Comment: With the exception of people like Bin Laden And Zawahiri, a good portion of the Al Qaeda leadership is now dead or in prison. The new generation do not have the experience, contact, nor global resources that the old Al Qaeda network did. When Bin Laden is finally caught or killed, much of the energy that fueled Al Qaeda will be dead. The ideals of global jihad and a global Islamic state will still be there, but the leaders who were the driving force are now almost all gone.

Al-Qa'eda Defeat In Sight, Says US Anti-Terrorism Official

A senior American counter-terrorism official has declared that the demise of al-Qa'eda is in sight because its failure to adapt its violent ideology and tactics has provoked growing dissent across the Islamic world.

The uprising by Sunni tribes against al-Qa'eda in Iraq, protests in northern Africa against suicide bombings and dissent from clerics and former terrorists have put the group's leadership on the defensive as never before, said the official.

My Comment: The organization may not be what it once was, but the ideology and goals of Al Qaeda are still held by a significant percentage of the Muslim world. It is only when the culture changes (preferably to a western concept) that when one can then feel comfortable that Al Qaeda is on the path to extinction.
