Euronews: Armenia and Azerbaijan trade blame over Nagorno-Karabakh attacks 

International brokers are trying to strike a new peace deal for the separatist region 

Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of firing across their shared border on Thursday as international efforts intensify to calm tensions over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. 

 "Azerbaijani forces are firing artillery and mortars at Armenian positions in the Sotk region of eastern Armenia," the Armenian defence ministry announced in a statement, saying three Armenian servicemen were wounded as a result of the shelling. 

The ministry added that Armenian forces were taking "appropriate defensive measures".

DW: Azerbaijan sets up checkpoint on vital road to Armenia 

The Lachin Corridor is the only route connecting Armenia to the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. 

Baku said it was responding to a similar move by Armenia. Azerbaijan has set up a checkpoint on the only road connecting Armenia to the contested Nagorno-Karabakh region for the first time since the 2020 war.

In a statement on Sunday, the state border service said that a border checkpoint was set up at the entrance of the road. It said the decision was in response to a similar move by Armenia. 

The border service added that the checkpoint was to "prevent the illegal transportation of manpower, weapons, mines." 

This is the first time Azerbaijan has taken such a step since the end of a 2020 war with Armenia over the contested region. As per the cease-fire which ended the war, Baku is required to guarantee safe passage on the Lachin Corridor.

DW: Nagorno-Karabakh: Russia says Azeri troops entered peacekeeping zone 

Moscow says soldiers from Azerbaijan have violated a peace deal with Armenia over the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The two sides fought a two-month war over the former Soviet territory in late 2020. 

Russia on Saturday claimed that soldiers from Azerbaijan have entered a zone that is the responsibility of Moscow's peacekeepers in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Russia's Defense Ministry said 

Azeri forces had set up a surveillance post and carried out four drone strikes in the breakaway territory, in violation of a cease-fire agreement. It added that Turkish-made drones were used to strike at Karabakh troops near the village of Farukh, also known as Parukh. 

The Defense Ministry of Nagorno-Karabakh said the drones had killed three people and wounded another 15.

France 24: Armenia-Azerbaijan ceasefire holds one day after deadly border clashes 

A Russian-brokered ceasefire was holding Wednesday at the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, officials said, a day after deadly clashes between the arch-foes sparked fears of another flare-up in their territorial dispute. 

On Tuesday, clashes between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops left eight soldiers dead in the worst fighting since last year's war over the long-disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. 

The six-week conflict, which claimed the lives of more than 6,500 people, ended last November in a Russia-mediated deal that saw Armenia cede swathes of territory it had controlled for decades.

A number of Armenian soldiers have been killed and captured in a flare-up of violence on the border with Azerbaijan. 

Armenia's defence ministry confirmed the losses. 

Officials said two combat positions had been lost and that it had asked Russia to help defend its territorial sovereignty. 

Azerbaijan made big gains in a six-week war fought last year over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. 

Tensions have remained since the conflict ended in a shaky peace deal.

RFE: Azerbaijan, Armenia Trade Blame Over Latest Deadly Border Clashes 

Azerbaijan and Armenia have blamed each other for the latest border shoot-out that Yerevan says claimed the lives of three of its soldiers amid renewed tensions between the two South Caucasus neighbors after last year's war over the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region. 

The Armenian Defense Ministry said three of its servicemen were killed and two wounded on July 28 after the Azerbaijani armed forces “once again provoked a violation of the cease-fire in the northeastern section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border” by launching attacks against Armenian positions."

Tensions between the countries are simmering again after they fought a war last year over the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan denies the new allegations from Armenia. 

Armenia said on Friday that Azerbaijan had failed to withdraw troops that had crossed the border in a disputed incident from the day before. 

On Thursday, Armenia accused Azerbaijan of sending troops across the frontier. Azerbaijan has denied this and said its forces only defended their side of the frontier.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday brought together the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan for the first time since a war last year over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, an effort to resolve problems that risk undermining the deal that ended the conflict. 

A Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement in November halted the six-week conflict between Azeri and ethnic Armenian forces over the mountainous enclave and surrounding areas, locking in territorial gains for Azerbaijan. 

But tensions persist, with sporadic fighting, prisoners of war continuing to be held by both sides, and disagreements over how a prospective new transport corridor cutting through the region will work.

BAKU -- Nearly 2,800 Azerbaijani soldiers were killed in fighting with ethnic Armenian forces over Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijani officials said, the first time Baku has published casualty figures from the 44-day conflict. 

The figures, released December 3 by the Defense Ministry, came nearly three weeks after a Russian-brokered cease-fire ended fighting over the breakaway territory, which is legally part of Azerbaijan but has been controlled by ethnic Armenians since the early 1990s. 

The fighting, which erupted September 27, was the worst since the early 1990s, and ended with Azerbaijani forces taking control over much of the mountainous region and surrounding districts.

Simon Maghakyan, Asia Times: Cultural erasure may spark next Nagorno-Karabakh war 

If Azerbaijan truly wants peace in Artsakh it should allow Armenians to keep five sacred Christian monuments. 

Azerbaijan’s recent 44-day war on Armenia-backed Artsakh, better known by its Soviet name of Nagorno-Karabakh, resulted in a Moscow-brokered deal earlier this week that effectively ends millennia-old Armenian existence in much of the region. 

In addition to land already lost on the battlefield, the deal dictates Armenians to cede to Azerbaijan many more territories by December 1. As they evacuate these lands, traumatized Armenians are leaving behind hundreds of sacred sites. Given Azerbaijan’s terrible record with cultural erasure, long-term peace may seem hopeless. 

Over the past 15 years, I have been researching cultural erasure as an understudied aspect of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. My research was prompted in December 2005 when, as a 19-year-old, I watched a newly-taped video of 100 Azerbaijani soldiers deliberately destroying Djulfa, the world’s largest medieval Armenian cemetery that at its height housed 10,000 medieval khachkars (cross-stones).

WNU Editor: Azerbaijan won this war because their oil wealth put it in the position to buy advanced weapons and they had political and military support (and encouragement) from Turkish President Erdogan. But Erdogan will not be in power forever and oil is not going to be as valuable in the future as the world slowly transitions to other energy alternatives. Reuters: Putin tells Azerbaijan to take care of Christian shrines in Nagorno-Karabakh 

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia’s President Vladimir Putin told his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev on Saturday to take care of Christian shrines in parts of Nagorno-Karabakh that Azerbaijan gets under this week’s ceasefire agreement, the Kremlin said. 

Russia brokered a ceasefire on Tuesday that secured territorial advances for Azerbaijan around the ethnic Armenian region, where Azeri troops have been battling ethnic Armenian forces over the past six weeks. 

Putin told Aliyev there were Christian churches and monasteries in areas of the enclave, internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but populated by ethnic Armenians, that Azerbaijan obtains under the ceasefire deal.

Eurasianet.org: After days of chaos, Armenia and Azerbaijan delay territory handover 

The messy reality on the ground in Kelbajar illustrates the difficulties to come in implementing the general principles of the ceasefire agreement. 

Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed on a last-minute delay of the first territorial handover stipulated in their ceasefire agreement following a chaotic, frantic attempt by Armenians to withdraw. 

According to the Russia-backed agreement signed early in the morning of November 10, Armenian forces were supposed to withdraw from the region of Kelbajar by November 15. 

That gave Armenians less than a week to manage several thorny issues: moving out thousands of Armenian residents of the territory, the status of the only currently operating road leading out of Karabakh, and the fate of a beloved medieval Armenian monastery on the territory.

The war in Artsakh has come to an end, and that end was bitter. 

In fact, the end was far more bitter then what anyone had expected as Artsakh President Arayik Harutyunyan described exactly how the situation was before Armenia accepted an agreement with Russia and Azerbaijan to abandoned most of the areas they control to Azerbaijani authorities and joint Russian peacekeepers. 

In a live speech made earlier today, Harutyunyan said that the city of Shushi was lost on November 7. 

“I do not know how history will evaluate the decision we made yesterday, but we were obliged to,” he said. “Had the hostilities continued at the same pace, we would have lost the whole of Artsakh in a matter of days.” 

“We had great human losses yesterday in the Martuni region, during the last hours. The army was exhausted with COVID-19,” the president explained.

A new video from Armenia shows a column of military trucks moving out of the town of Goris. 

They carry Russian peacekeepers deployed to oversee a truce in the disputed Azerbaijani region of Nagorno-Karabakh. 

The troops have been sent to the area to keep apart the forces of ethnic Armenians and Azerbaijanis. 

After a six-week-long armed conflict, the Armenians have been forced to relinquish control over large swaths of Azerbaijani territory that they won three decades ago.

It comes after six weeks of fighting between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenians. 

The region is internationally recognised as Azerbaijani, but has been run by ethnic Armenians since 1994. In that year, a truce was signed after fighting but not a peace deal. 

A number of ceasefire agreements have been brokered since fighting broke out again in September, but all of them have failed.

Russian Mi-24 Helicopter Shot Down Over Armenia By Azerbaijan

 

DW: Nagorno-Karabakh: Russian helicopter shot down over Armenia 

A Russian military helicopter has been downed over Armenia amid clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. 

Azerbaijan has admitted to shooting the aircraft down by accident. 

 A Russian military helicopter has been shot down over Armenia, with two crew members killed and one injured, Russia's Defense Ministry said on Monday.

In a statement, the ministry said the Mi-24 attack helicopter was downed by fire from a man-portable air-defense system close to the border with Azerbaijan.

Reuters: Azerbaijan announces capture of Karabakh's second-largest city, Armenia denies it

BAKU/YEREVAN (Reuters) - Azeris celebrated on the streets of Baku after President Ilham Aliyev said on Sunday his country’s forces had taken Shusha, the second-largest city in the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, but Armenian officials denied the city had been captured. 

Shusha, which Armenians call Shushi, is of cultural and strategic importance to both sides and is located 15 km (9 miles) south of the enclave’s largest city Stepanakert. 

At least 1,000 people have died in nearly six weeks of fighting in and around Nagorno-Karabakh, a mountainous enclave internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but populated and controlled by ethnic Armenians.

Reuters: Nagorno-Karabakh says its two largest cities under fierce attack 

TBILISI (Reuters) - Three residents of Nagorno-Karabakh’s largest city were killed during overnight shelling by Azeri forces, the enclave’s ethnic Armenian-controlled Emergency and Rescue Service said on Friday, as the battle for control of its major settlements intensified. 

Azerbaijan denied the reports of shelling in Stepanakert. 

Two independent observers said fighting appeared to be moving deeper into the enclave, with Azeri troops stepping up attacks on its biggest two cities.
