Russian And Chinese Officials Join North Korean Kim At Military Parade

Reuters: Russian, Chinese officials join Kim at North Korea military parade

SEOUL (Reuters) - Chinese and Russian officials stood shoulder to shoulder with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as they reviewed his newest nuclear-capable missiles and attack drones at a military parade in the capital, North Korean state media showed on Friday.

The widely anticipated parade in Pyongyang the previous day commemorated the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, celebrated in North Korea as "Victory Day".

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu's visit was the first by Moscow's top defence official since the 1991 break-up of the Soviet Union. The Chinese delegation was the first since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their appearance at events with the North's nuclear-capable missiles - banned by the U.N. Security Council with Chinese and Russian support - was in contrast from previous years, when Beijing and Moscow sought to distance themselves from their neighbour's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile development.

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA — North Korea will this week welcome Russia's defense minister and a high-level Chinese delegation to Pyongyang for Korean War armistice anniversary celebrations, state media said Tuesday, a sign it could be reopening its borders to high-level visitors after a lengthy pandemic closure.

"A military delegation of the Russian Federation led by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu will pay a congratulatory visit to the DPRK," the Korean Central News Agency said, a day after it confirmed a Chinese delegation would also attend the Thursday event.

Russia, one of Pyongyang's historic allies, remains one of a handful of nations that maintains friendly relations with the North, and its leader Kim Jong Un has recently been steadfast in his support for Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, including, Washington says, supplying rockets and missiles.

VOA/AFP: China Willing to Work with North Korea for 'World Peace,' State Media Says

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA — Chinese President Xi Jinping told North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that Beijing was willing to work with Pyongyang for world peace, North Korean state media said Saturday.

The message from Xi came days after North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile in one of its most powerful tests yet, declaring it would meet perceived U.S. nuclear threats with nukes of its own.

North Korea has conducted a record-breaking blitz of missile launches in recent weeks, and fears have grown that it is building up to a seventh nuclear test, its first since 2017.

President Biden Says It Is Hard To Say If China Can Control North Korea

Reuters: Biden says it's unclear if China can stop a North Korean nuclear test

NUSA DUA, Indonesia (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden said on Monday he told Chinese President Xi Jinping that Beijing has an obligation to try to talk North Korea out of conducting a seventh nuclear test, although he said it was unclear whether China had the ability to do so.

Biden met with Xi for more than three hours ahead of the G20 summit in Bali, their first face-to-face meeting since Biden took power last year.

At a press conference following the meeting, Biden said he told Xi "that I thought they had an obligation to attempt to make it clear" to North Korea that it should not go ahead with a test.

WNU Editor: President Biden is saying what this blog has been saying for years. China and Russia can influence North Korea, but in the end it is North Korea that decides what it wants to do, even if both China and Russia tell them not to do it.

China Has Provided A Coronavirus Vaccine To Kim Jong-un, His Family, And Members Of The Leadership

19FortyFive: North Korea: Kim Jong Un Given Coronavirus Vaccine

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and “multiple other high-ranking officials within the Kim family and leadership network” have been vaccinated for Coronavirus “within the last two to three weeks” thanks to a vaccine candidate supplied by the Chinese government, according to two Japanese intelligence sources.

Both officials spoke to 19FortyFive under the condition that their names not be identified. The news comes on the heels of reports in Reuters that North Korea is suspected to have tried to hack into the computer networks of drugmaker AstraZeneca, part of what appears to be a wide-ranging campaign to secure any and all COVID-19 vaccine data it can through illegal cyberattacks.

WNU Editor: People outside of China are not sure if the Chinese coronavirus vaccine shows promise and/or is effective. But if this report is true, it shows once again on how dependent North Korea is on China.

Washington Times: Trump hails China for cutting trade with North Korea

The White House praised China Friday for sharply curtailing trade with North Korea in an effort to force the regime in Pyongyang to end its nuclear weapons programs.

“This action supports the United States-led global effort to apply maximum pressure until the North Korean regime ends its illicit programs, changes its behavior, and moves toward denuclearization of the Korean peninsula,” said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

China on Friday reported that its trade with North Korea fell 10.5 percent in 2017, compared with the previous year. Mr. Trump has been urging Beijing to isolate North Korea economically after a series of intercontinental ballistic missile tests by Pyongyang.

In December, the drop in trade was even more significant — falling 50.6 percent from the same period in 2016.
