Chinese Satellite Launch Triggers Emergency Air Raid Alert Across Taiwan

The alert was sent to mobile phones across Taiwan

BBC: China satellite launch triggers air raid alert in Taiwan ahead of election

Taiwan issued an islandwide air raid alert after a Chinese satellite flew over its southern airspace days before a crucial presidential election.

Mobile phone users across the self-ruled island received a message warning them to "be aware for your safety".

The "presidential alert" underlined jitters ahead of pivotal presidential and legislative elections on Saturday.

China has long claimed Taiwan as part of its own territory and has been accused of interfering in the vote.

The self-governing island of 23 million people, is a key flashpoint in the tussle between China and the US for supremacy in Asia.

Analysts say the elections will shape the trajectory of ties between Beijing and Washington.

Chinese President Xi Sends Warning Over Taiwan

Experts believe that by raking the Taiwan unification issue during Mao’s birth anniversary, Xi has sought to elevate himself above the late leader. Photograph:(AFP)

Reuters: Xi vows to prevent anyone 'splitting Taiwan from China'

BEIJING (Reuters) - President Xi Jinping vowed on Tuesday to resolutely prevent anyone from "splitting Taiwan from China in any way", the official Xinhua news agency reported, a little more than two weeks before Taiwan elects a new leader.

China views democratically-governed Taiwan as its own territory, despite the strong objections of the government in Taipei, and has ramped up military and political pressure to assert its sovereignty claims.

Taiwan holds presidential and parliamentary elections on Jan. 13 and how the island handles relations with China is a major point of contention on the campaign trail.

Taiwan's President Says China Unlikely To Invade Due To Numerous Economic, Financial And Political Challenges

The Guardian: Taiwan president says China has too many problems to invade

Tsai Ing-wen says economic, financial and political challenges overwhelm Xi Jinping’s government, with international pressure also a deterrent

Taiwan’s president has said China is unlikely to attempt an invasion any time soon because it is “overwhelmed” by domestic problems.

Tsai Ing-wen made the remarks in an interview at the New York Times Dealbook Summit.

Beijing considers Taiwan to be a province of China, and has vowed to annex it under what it terms “reunification”. Xi has repeatedly said he hopes for a peaceful takeover, but has not ruled out the use of force. Taiwan’s government and population overwhelmingly reject the prospect of Chinese rule.

Asked about Xi’s hopes for a “peaceful” unification, Tsai on Wednesday said she believed the Chinese leadership was “overwhelmed by its internal challenges”.

Al Jazeera: China unveils ‘special’ measures to boost Taiwan’s access to coastal Fujian

Beijing has proposed transforming Fujian province into a zone for integrated development with Taiwan.

China will take a number of “special” policy measures to improve access for Taiwanese enterprises to Fujian province across the Taiwan Strait, the Chinese state planner has announced, under a long-term cross-strait integrated development plan.

China will deepen the integrated development of the Chinese city of Xiamen and Taiwan-controlled Kinmen islands, including the acceleration of gas, electricity and transportation links between the two, said Cong Liang, vice chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, on Thursday.

Taiwan To Conduct ‘Doomsday Drills’ Giving A Glimpse On What War With China Will Look Like

Daily Beast: Taiwan’s ‘Doomsday Drills’: A Chilling Glimpse of War With China

The drill simulating a Chinese attack will include shelter orders and traffic stops, bringing cities to a near standstill in hopes of giving civilians the best shot at survival.

From Monday through Thursday this week, Taiwan will be running a defense exercise simulating a Chinese air attack, preparing civilians for what to do if China invades. And from Monday through Friday, Taiwan will be running a live-fire exercise to test Taiwan’s combat readiness to respond to a Chinese invasion, according to the Ministry of National Defense.

Civilians will be required to shelter in place when the defense drill is underway, according to CNA. In some locales, drivers out on the streets will be asked to stop their cars and evacuate them, as will passengers on public transportation, bringing cities to a near standstill, according to Taipei’s Department of Transportation.

The entire drill is aimed at reducing casualties in the case of an attack from China, which has been growing increasingly aggressive towards Taiwan. Over the last few weeks, China has sent a record number of warships to waters surrounding Taiwan. According to American officials, the current U.S. government assessment is that Chinese President Xi Jinping is working to be prepared for conflict in either 2025 or 2027.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) recently ramped up warship activities around the island of Taiwan, breaking the record for the number of vessels deployed in its drills in the region.

Analysts said Sunday that the recent intensive exercises demonstrate the PLA's capabilities in encircling the island, and likely featured amphibious landing training.

The U.S. State Department had approved the potential sale of ammunition and logistics support to Taiwan in two separate deals valued at up to $440 million, the Pentagon said last week.

Chairman Of The U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Says China Has Yet To Decide Whether To Order Taiwan Unification By 2027

FILE - U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley, Feb. 14, 2023.

VOA: Chinese Army Invasion of Taiwan Not a Given, US General Says

WASHINGTON - There is still time to dissuade Beijing not to use force to reunify Taiwan with mainland China, according to America’s most senior military official.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, said Friday that despite well-publicized plans calling for the Chinese military to be ready to invade Taiwan by 2027, there is no indication Chinese President Xi Jinping has made a decision one way or the other.

Speaking to an audience at the National Press Club in Washington, Milley said that gives the U.S. and other countries time to show Xi the use of force would be a bad idea. “You want to make sure that every single day, President Xi wakes up and says, 'Today is not that day,' and that that decision never comes,” he said.

The Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday, just two days after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded a fence-mending visit to China.

While both sides described his talks with senior officials - including President Xi Jinping - as constructive, Blinken failed to persuade his Chinese hosts to agree to resume high-level military dialogue between the two countries.

The US has been pushing for a channel of communication between senior commanders to help reduce the risk of miscalculations and misunderstandings amid rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan Says 37 Chinese Warplanes Entered Its Air Defence Zone

The Guardian/Reuters: Taiwan says 37 Chinese military aircraft entered its air defence zone

Dozens of Chinese fighters and bombers entered patrol area, says Taipei, in latest incursion by military

Taiwan activated its defence systems on Thursday after reporting 37 Chinese military aircraft flying into the island’s air defence zone, some of which then flew into the western Pacific, in Beijing’s latest mass air incursion.

China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has over the past three years regularly flown its air force into the skies near the island, though not into Taiwan’s territorial airspace.

Taiwan’s defence ministry said that starting from 5am it had detected 37 Chinese air force planes, including J-11 and J-16 fighters as well as nuclear-capable H-6 bombers, flying into the south-western corner of its air defence identification zone, or ADIZ. The ADIZ is a broader area Taiwan monitors and patrols to give its forces more time to respond to threats.

China claims self-ruled democratic Taiwan as its territory, and has vowed to take it one day – by force if necessary. Since Taiwan's leader Tsai Ing-wen – who rejects that the island is part of China – was elected in 2016, Beijing has ramped up air and sea incursions around the island.
