The Worst Place In The World

Reuters

THE WORST PLACE IN THE WORLD: See What Life Is Like In Somalia -- Business Insider

Worse than Congo, Sudan, South Sudan, Chad, Yemen, and Afghanistan, Somalia is the most failed state in the world, according to the annual ranking by Foreign Policy and The Global Fund For Peace.

Located in the Horn of Africa, the majority Sunni Muslim country suffers from an ineffective government, famine, disease, piracy, militant extremism, and frequent external intervention.

No wonder it has topped the list of the most failed states every year since 2008.

Failed States Index: The Most Unsustainable Countries In The World Are All Concentrated In Africa -- IBTimes

Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and South Sudan are the four most dangerously unstable countries in the world, according to the just released Failed States Index, compiled by the Foreign Policy Group and the Fund For Peace.

The Failed States Index looks at 12 primary social, economic and political indicators -- like demographic pressures, human flight and brain drain, state legitimacy, poverty and economic decline, human rights, security apparatus -- that can be used as a tool to identify exactly what might push a country to the brink of failure, according to the Foreign Policy Group.

The most sustainable states on this ranked list were Finland and Sweden, followed by several other Western European countries and Canada.

The World's No. 1 Failed State Is Somalia

Somalia Declared World's No. 1 Failed State, Terrorism Cited -- ABC News

Somalia gained new notoriety this week, as revelations about recent U.S. drone strikes there surfaced and the Eastern African nation was ranked first on a list of the most failed states in the world.

The Fund for Peace launched its 2011 Failed State Index at an event earlier this week, listing Somalia as No. 1 for the fourth year in a row, due to a combination of "widespread lawlessness, ineffective government, terrorism, insurgency, crime, abysmal development and piracy."

Postcards From Hell Images From The World's Most Failed States.

From Foreign Policy:

For the last half-decade, the Fund for Peace, working with Foreign Policy, has been putting together the Failed States Index, using a battery of indicators to determine how stable -- or unstable -- a country is. But as the photos here demonstrate, sometimes the best test is the simplest one: You'll only know a failed state when you see it.

Foreign Policy's The Failed States Index 2010

From Foreign Policy:

The 10 states that fill out the top ranks of this year's Failed States Index -- the world's most vulnerable nations -- are a sadly familiar bunch. Shattered Somalia has been the No. 1 failed state for three years running, and none of the current top 10 has shown much improvement, if any, since FOREIGN POLICY and the Fund for Peace began publishing the index in 2005. Altogether, the top 10 slots have rotated among just 15 unhappy countries in the index's six years. State failure, it seems, is a chronic condition.

2010 Failed States Index - Interactive Map and Rankings

Somalia Tops List of World's "Failed States" -- CBS News

Somalia tops the list of nations named in Foreign Policy Magazine's annual index of "failed states."

Piracy and terrorism-plagued Somalia is followed by four other African nations - Chad, the Sudan, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic Republic of Congo - in the top five.

And despite the presence of hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops as part of a nearly decade-old battle that promised stability, Afghanistan and Iraq rank sixth and seventh. One of America's principal allies in the so-called war on terror, Pakistan, is number 10.

(See the rankings on an interactive map.)

My comment: An interesting list. As a Canadian citizen I am biased, but I would have ranked Canada a little bit higher.
