Former Taliban Hostage Joshua Boyle Jailed After Arrest On Assault Charges In Canada

CTV News: Ex-hostage Joshua Boyle arrested, charged with sex assault, forcible confinement

A Canadian man recently freed with his wife and young children after years of being held hostage in Afghanistan has been charged with at least a dozen offences, including sexual assault, his lawyer said Tuesday.

Joshua Boyle, 34, was arrested in Ottawa, his lawyer, Eric Granger, told The Canadian Press.

Ottawa police declined to provide any details on the case.

Boyle and his American wife, Caitlan Coleman, were taken hostage in 2012 by a Taliban-linked group while on a backpacking trip in Afghanistan. Coleman was pregnant at the time and the couple had three children in captivity.

Granger said the charges against Boyle also include assault and forcible confinement.

US-Canadian Couple Held For Five Years Freed From Taliban's Haqqani Network

BBC: Taliban hostage family freed by Pakistani troops

Pakistani soldiers have freed a North American family of five who were being held hostage by the Afghan Taliban.

Canadian Joshua Boyle and his US wife Caitlan Coleman were kidnapped while backpacking in Afghanistan in 2012. They had three children while in captivity.

They were rescued after a US tip-off during an operation near the Afghan border, the Pakistani army said.

US President Donald Trump said it was a "positive moment" for US-Pakistan ties.

The Guardian: Isis widow charged for her role in the death of hostage Kayla Mueller

Umm Sayyaf could face life in prison for conspiring in the death of American aid worker Kayla Mueller, who was abused and raped by Isis leader

US federal prosecutors have filed charges against an Iraqi woman accused of holding American aid worker Kayla Mueller hostage before she was killed in Syria.

In an affidavit released on Monday, FBI special agent William Heaney charged 25-year-old Nisreen Assad Ibrahim Bahar, also known as Umm Sayyaf, with conspiring to provide material support to Islamic State – an offense that officials allege resulted in Mueller’s death in February 2014.

Three American Contractors Are Missing In Iraq

CNN: 3 American contractors missing in Iraq

(CNN)Three American contractors went missing in Iraq two days ago, said a senior security official in Baghdad.

"A company filed a report Sunday about three of its staff going missing two days ago. They are American contractors. We are looking into this report," the official told CNN.

Separately, an Iraqi security official with knowledge of the case said that two of three missing contractors are dual Iraqi-American citizens, and that the third is an American national.

The men were grabbed by a group of gunmen from an apartment in Baghdad's southeastern Dora neighborhood late Friday afternoon, the source said.

The contractors were taken away in a convoy consisting of several vehicles, said the source, who talked to CNN on condition of anonymity as he is not authorized to speak to the media.

Three Of The Four Americans Freed By Iran As Part Of A Prisoner Swap Have Left Iran

CNN: Plane carrying Americans in Iran prisoner swap has taken off

(CNN)A plane carrying at least three of the four Americans freed by Iran as part of a prisoner swap has taken off, three of the men's families said in Sunday statements.

White House officials said earlier Sunday that recently detained student Matthew Trevithick, who was released -- but not as part of the prisoner swap -- had left Iran. There were no additional details.

The situation of the fifth prisoner, identified by U.S. officials as Nosratollah Khosravi-Roodsari, was not immediately known. A statement from a senior White House official did not name specific prisoners and provided only sparse details.

Reuters: Americans seek swap in U.S. reporter case, says Iranian official

Unnamed Americans have contacted Iran for a deal to swap Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian, convicted and jailed in Iran on spying charges, for other unspecified detainees, according to a senior Iranian official quoted on Sunday.

"Some Americans contact us sometimes, asking us to exchange him with other detainees, but the sentence has not been announced yet," said judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, quoted by Iran's Fars news agency.

Ejei did not specify which detainees could be under consideration nor give any other details of what the Americans could have in mind for a swap with Rezaian.

But Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani has hinted at the possibility that Rezaian could be freed in exchange for Iranian prisoners in the United States. Other Iranian officials have played down the possibility of such a swap.

Americans Held Hostage In Iran 36 Years Ago Have Finally Won Compensation for Their Ordeal

An American hostage is paraded before a crowd outside the U.S. embassy compound in Tehran, Iran, Nov. 9, 1979.

New York Times: Americans Held Hostage in Iran Win Compensation 36 Years Later

WASHINGTON — After spending 444 days in captivity, and more than 30 years seeking restitution, the Americans taken hostage at the United States Embassy in Tehran in 1979 have finally won compensation.

Buried in the huge spending bill signed into law last Friday are provisions that would give each of the 53 hostages or their estates up to $4.4 million. Victims of other state-sponsored terrorist attacks such as the 1998 American Embassy bombings in East Africa would also be eligible for benefits under the law.

“I had to pull over to the side of the road, and I basically cried,” said Rodney V. Sickmann, who was a Marine sergeant working as a security guard at the embassy in Tehran when he was seized along with the other Americans by an angry mob that overran the compound on Nov. 4, 1979. “It has been 36 years, one month, 14 days, obviously, until President Obama signed the actual bill, until Iran was held accountable,” he said.

WNU editor: As a former diplomat I boil every-time I read this story. And while I am happy and overjoyed that these American hostages will finally receive some compensation .... 36 years after the fact .... I am unhappy that this money is not coming from the pockets of the Iranian government or the individuals who were responsible for this crime in the first place.

Are The Taliban Still Holding American Hostages?

Shane Harris, Daily Beast: Exclusive: Secret U.S. Hostage Held by Taliban Allies

‘There are still Americans in captivity in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region,’ a top congressman reveals. The question is: How many? And what’s Washington doing to recover them?
A group of Islamist militants aligned with the Taliban has been holding an American man hostage for more than a year, according to U.S. officials and others familiar with his case, which has not been reported previously.

The disclosure of another American hostage raises questions about how many Americans are being held abroad—and what the U.S. government is doing to recover them. The Obama administration has been working to streamline its hostage rescue efforts, which critics say have suffered from a lumbering bureaucracy that hasn’t kept family members fully informed about their loved ones. How effective those efforts have been is unclear.

WNU Editor: I suspect that these are not the only cases.

Has 'Hope' Become The Basis For U.S. Foreign Policy?

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry talks to the media after a meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir at the State Department in Washington July 16, 2015. Reuters/Yuri Gripas

Reuters: Kerry: 'very, very hopeful' Iran will release detained Americans

Secretary of State John Kerry said on Friday he raised the topic of detained Americans at every meeting he held with Iranians during the final weeks of nuclear negotiations and said he is hopeful Tehran would release them.

The Obama administration has faced criticism for not securing the Americans' release as part of the landmark deal reached on Tuesday in Vienna to curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

There are three Americans known to be detained by Iran.

In an interview with MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Kerry defended his team's efforts to get them freed, including during the final round of negotiations that began on June 27.

President Obama: 'Families Negotiating Ransom For U.S. Hostages Won't Be Prosecuted'

Voice of America: Obama Announces Changes to US Hostage Policy

President Barack Obama has ordered an extensive reform of U.S. policies about dealing with hostage-takers, and he pledged the government will use "all instruments of national power" to recover Americans being held prisoner abroad by terrorists.

The government will no longer threaten to prosecute families who try to negotiate with kidnappers, or pay ransom to win their relatives' release, Obama said Wednesday at the White House.

WNU Editor: After opening the door with the negotiated release of Sgt. Bergdahl from his Taliban captors .... how could the White House then say no to these families.

Did The Berghdahl Swap For Five Taliban Commanders Doomed Any Chance That U.S. Aide Worker Kayla Mueller Would Be Released?

Nolan Feeney, Time: Kayla Mueller’s Family Says Bergdahl Deal Hurt Her Chance for Freedom

ISIS claims the American aid worker was killed in a Jordanian air strike earlier this month

The family of an American aid worker who died while in ISIS captivity said the prisoner swap deal that freed Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl from the Taliban last year hurt efforts to secure the release of their daughter.

Relatives of Kayla Mueller told NBC on Monday that her captors’ demands, which started with a $6.2 million ransom, increased after the White House exchanged five Taliban prisoners at Guantanamo Bay for Bergdahl, who had spent five years in captivity, Reuters reports.

WNU Editor: Hearing this family just breaks your heart. In my book Kayla Mueller is worth 1,000 Bowe Bergdahls any-day.
