What Would Happen If India And Pakistan Waged A Nuclear War?

Zachary Keck, National Interest: What Could Happen if India and Pakistan Wage a Nuclear War

Billions Dead: That's What Could Happen if India and Pakistan Wage a Nuclear War

This is the real nuclear crisis the world is missing.

Armed with what they believe is reasonable intelligence about the locations of Pakistan’s strategic forces, highly accurate missiles and MIRVs to target them, and a missile defense that has a shot at cleaning up any Pakistani missiles that survived the first strike, Indian leaders might be tempted to launch a counterforce first strike.

With the world’s attention firmly fixated on North Korea, the greatest possibility of nuclear war is in fact on the other side of Asia.

WNU Editor: To me the outcome is very clear. In the event of a nuclear between India and Pakistan .... the nuclear fires and subsequent dust-cloud will destroy the infrastructure that provides the necessities of life to one and a half billion people. We would be witnessed to the biggest migration of peoples never been seen in human history.

Pakistani Nuclear Scientist: 'None Of India's Cities Can Remain Safe From Our Missiles' -- "They Are On The Launchers"

From Memri:

Amid growing tensions between India and Pakistan following the 11/26 Mumbai terror attacks, Pakistani nuclear scientist Dr. Samar Mubarakmand spoke of the readiness of Pakistani missiles and of their capability to target Indian cities. Dr. Mubarakmand, who has steered the Pakistani nuclear program for the past several decades alongside disgraced nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, expressed his views during a talk show.

Following are excerpts from the interview, as published in the Urdu-language Pakistani newspaper Roznama Express:

My Comment: Such talk (right after the attack at Mumbai) will only inflame the situation. To state that your nuclear forces are on hair trigger alert .... on their launchers .... and can be fired in 10 minutes .... this is irresponsibility in the extreme.

Pakistan’s N-Arsenal Called Risk-Prone

From Pakistan Daily Times:

WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal was described as risk-prone at a Senate hearing on Thursday.

Among those who testified before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, was Stephen P Cohen of the Brookings Institution, who said, “Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities present at least four challenges to American policy: There is a small but real possibility of the next India-Pakistan crisis escalating to nuclear levels. Pakistan may decide, as a matter of state policy, to extend a nuclear umbrella (or engage in nuclear sharing) with one or more Middle East states, especially if Iran acquires a nuclear device.

News On Pakistan's Nuclear Weapons From Other Sources:
Western fears of radicals taking over Pakistan’s nukes ill founded: nuclear expert -- Daily Times (Pakistan)
The greatest threat to the United States security -- American Chronicle
US should consider criteria-based nuclear deal with Pakistan -- Associate Press Of Pakistan

My Comment: Pakistan's Government does not control its frontier areas with Afghanistan, its intelligence officers openly support the Taliban and their allies, and its "father of the atomic bomb" scientist openly sold his secrets to whoever would pay him. Pakistan has a credibility problem that they are not addressing to the world.

With a minimum of 100 weapons in its arsenal, one must question what are the security arrangements for such weapon systems. Pakistan will probably tell everyone to go take a hike. We in the West must then make it very clear on what the consequences would be for the people of Pakistan if proper safeguards are not employed, and if one of their weapons should explode in a city.
