Deutsche Welle: In northeast India, rebels kill army soldiers

Heavily armed rebels have killed at least 21 Indian army soldiers in an ambush in Manipur state. The region has long been a hotbed for insurgents fighting the government in Delhi.

Police said the soldiers were killed on Thursday when a group of rebels armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons attacked a military convoy in Chandel district traveling to the state capital, Imphal.

Fourteen soldiers were also injured in the attack, one of the worst such incidents in the troubled region in years. The injured were flown to hospital from the remote area by helicopter, a police officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The army said it had launched a search for the attackers in the area.

A day after major Indian cities were placed on high alert following blasts in the IT city of Bangalore, as many as 17 blasts ripped through Ahmedabad, capital of the affluent western Indian state of Gujarat. Some 30 people were killed, some at hospitals where bombs were timed to go off when the injured from other blasts were being brought in. (Later, in Surat, a center for the world's diamond industry, a bomb was defused near a hospital and two cars packed with explosives were found in in the city's outskirts.) Investigators pointed fingers at the usual Islamist suspects: Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Bangladesh-based Harkat-ul Jihadi Islami (HUJI) and the indigenous Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). But even as the police searched for clues, the Ahmedabad attacks were owned up by a group calling itself the "Indian Mujahideen."

My Comment: This article is a good summary of India's terrorism problems. We are not talking about small groups and communities, we are talking about communities that number in the tens of millions. How India is going to confront this problem is going to dictate how Hindus and Muslims can live together.

Seventeen Bombs Hit India's Ahmedabad, 29 Killed, 100 Plus Wounded

AHMEDABAD, India (Reuters) - At least 16 small bombs exploded in the Indian city of Ahmedabad on Saturday, killing at least 29 people and wounding 88, a day after another set of blasts in the country's IT hub, officials said.

On Friday, eight bombs exploded in quick succession in the southern information technology city of Bangalore, killing at least one person and wounding six others.

Saturday's blasts were in Ahmedabad's crowded old city dominated by its Muslim community. One was in a metal tiffin box, used to carry food, another apparently left on a bicycle.

"The blasts occurred in 90 minutes, one in a hospital, others in the old city of Ahmedabad," Narendra Modi, the state's Hindu-nationalist chief minister told reporters.

My Comment: This is one of many bombings that have occurred in India this month. This new wave of attacks started with the bombing of the Indian Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan .... a bombing that no one took responsibility for. While a group with the name Indian Mujahideen has taken credit for some of the bombings this month in India, no suspects have been recently arrested.

The fear is that a foreign government is fermenting this violence. Naturally, Indian politicians and security officials are looking at Pakistan .... and with good cause. Pakistan has openly supported numerous groups that have used terrorism in India in the past.

The big fear among Indian security officials is a repeat of the riots that occurred in Ahmadabad in 2002. Quoting from CBS ....

Those fears were amplified by the history of Ahmadabad, a crowded and historic city that in 2002 was the scene of one of worst incidents of rioting between India's Hindu majority and its Muslim minority.

The violence killed about 1,000 people, most of them Muslims. It was triggered by a fire that killed 60 passengers on a train packed with Hindu pilgrims. Hindu extremists blamed the deaths on Muslims and rampaged through Muslim neighborhoods, although the cause of the blaze remains unclear.

Indian politicians are starting to point fingers at the Muslin community and at India's neighbours .... India is clearly losing its battle against terror.
