At least 27 people were killed in an attack on a political rally in Kabul on Friday, officials said, in the deadliest assault in Afghanistan since the US signed a withdrawal deal with the Taliban.

The attack highlights the glaring lack of security in the heavily fortified Afghan capital just 14 months ahead of the scheduled withdrawal of all foreign forces under an agreement signed on February 29 by the US and the Taliban.

FOX News: Afghanistan security adviser says hard-line Taliban members defecting to ISIS, merging with Al Qaeda

More than 18 years after U.S. forces entered Afghanistan and usurped the Taliban government from power, the country remains a patchwork of progress, pain, and bloodletting.

While the territorial dominance and perpetual attacks orchestrated by the Taliban remains at the forefront of the fragile nation’s woes, the presence of other insurgent groups and blatant threats to U.S. interests also lurk in the periphery.

“Many Taliban commanders, hardliners that did not want to join the peace process. We had intelligence that showed they are going to join ISIS. That threat may increase over a period of time,” Afghan National Security Adviser, Hamdullah Mohib, told Fox News on Tuesday. “For the time being, ISIS is not a strategic threat to us. We have been able to get rid of them in places they have taken hold. But if the peace process goes wrong and doesn’t really integrate all of the Taliban, the hardliners may join ISIS, which is when it will become a strategic threat to us and our international partners.”

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) group is expanding its footprint in Afghanistan "with thousands and thousands" of fighters after losing its so-called caliphate in Syria and Iraq.

The armed group is recruiting new soldiers and plotting attacks on the United States and other Western countries, US and Afghan security officials say.

ISIL is seen as an even greater threat than the Taliban because of its increasingly sophisticated military capabilities and its strategy of targeting civilians, both in Afghanistan and abroad. Concerns run so deep that some officials have come to see the Taliban, which has also clashed with ISIL, as a potential partner in containing it.

The leader of ISIL in Afghanistan was killed in air strikes in eastern Nangarhar province, the fourth head of the armed group to die since it emerged in the country in recent years.

Abu Saad Erhabi and 10 other Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) members died in a joint operation with coalition forces on Saturday night, the National Directorate of Security said in a statement on Sunday.

"The emir of Daesh in Afghanistan - along with 10 others - was killed," it said, using the armed group's Arabic acronym.

Newsweek: ISIS vs. Taliban: Dozens Killed as Battle for Afghanistan Continues

The Taliban and the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) are facing off in a battle for control of Afghanistan, even as the U.S. and its allies attempt to pacify the war-torn nation.

The Taliban has been the most potent armed force in Afghanistan since it emerged from the south of the country in 1994. While the U.S.-led coalition continues its seemingly unwinnable war against the extremists, the threat of the local ISIS affiliate group is growing.

On Tuesday, ISIS-Khorasan Province (ISIS-KP) fighters attacked the house of a Taliban commander in Sar-e Pul, killing at least 15 militants attending a prayer ceremony, Reuters reported. It is the latest operation in a series of clashes during recent weeks.

U.S. and Afghan special operations troops -- in one of their largest joint operations -- captured a stronghold that Islamic State fighters claimed as their local capital, military officials said Saturday.

No Americans or Afghan troops were killed in the offensive, which the U.S. military said killed 167 fighters from the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS or Daesh, and involved a complex multi-pronged attack on Gurgoray, a town purported to be the group's capital in Deh Bala district in Nangarhar province.

"This area, two months ago, was controlled by Daesh," Brig. Gen. John W. Brennan Jr., commander of NATO forces in eastern Afghanistan, said at a special operations outpost in Deh Bala. "We pushed them into the mountains, so they cannot harm the people here."

A suicide bomb attack at a voter registration centre in the Afghan capital Kabul has killed at least 52 people, officials say.

The dead include 21 women and five children, killed when the blast hit the queue outside. A further 112 people were injured.

The Islamic State group (IS) said it had carried out the attack.

Voter registration began this month for legislative elections which are due to take place in October.

IS's mouthpiece said a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt had targeted the centre, which is in the Dashte Barchi area of western Kabul.

Reuters: Afghan air strike kills Islamic State commander

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan forces killed an important Islamic State (IS) commander in an air strike, one year after he defected from the Taliban and established a new IS foothold in the country, security officials said.

Qari Hekmat was killed in a drone strike on Thursday afternoon in the Darz Aab district of Afghanistan’s northern Jawzjan province, said Hanif Rezaee, spokesman for the Afghan National Army Air Corps.

He said Mawlavi Habib Ur Rahman has been appointed as his IS successor in the north of the country.

The militant group, also known as Daesh, established a new foothold in the province last year when Hekmat defected from the Taliban, attracting the attention of U.S. forces.

IS claimed responsibility for suicide bombs last month near Shi’ite mosques in Herat and Kabul. Both the Western-backed government in Kabul and the main Islamist militant group, the Taliban, fight Islamic State.

U.S. airstrikes killed two leaders of ISIS-Khorasan — the Islamic State’s Afghan offshoot — this month, as U.S. commanders claim they are fighting a narrative pushed by Russia that IS is growing in the country.

Omair and Abu Samaya, ISIS-K’s lead facilitators of foreign fighters, were killed during a meeting in the northern Afghan province of Sari Pul. Later that same night, Afghan Special Security Forces killed an additional 13 ISIS-K fighters during a raid in Jowzjan, a neighboring province.

The raid occurred in an area ISIS-K believed to be a safe haven for the arrival of their foreign fighters and weapons, according to a press release from NATO Special Operations Component Command-Afghanistan.

VOA: Russia Says About 10,000 IS Militants Now in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD — Russia has estimated there are about 10,000 Islamic State militants in Afghanistan and their number is growing because fighters fleeing Syria and Iraq also are heading to the war-ravaged country.

Russian media on Saturday quoted Zamir Kabulov, Russia's special presidential envoy for Afghanistan, as saying Moscow is particularly worried about an increasing foothold of Daesh militants in northern Afghan provinces bordering Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Daesh is the Arabic acronym for IS.

"Russia was among the first to be sounding the alarms in connection with the emergence of Daesh in Afghanistan.... Daesh has significantly increased its power in the country recently. According to our estimates, the number of militants exceeds 10,000 and continues to grow, particularly due to new fighters arriving from Syria and Iraq," Kabulov told the Sputnik news agency.

The Islamic State militant group (ISIS) beheaded more than a dozen of its own fighters in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, according to officials.

The killings happened in the eastern province of Nangarhar, where ISIS has grown in influence and jostled with the country’s largest militant group, the Taliban.

Attaullah Khogyani, the provincial governor's spokesman, told Reuters that the killings took place in the Surkh Ab bazaar of Achin district.

Reuters: Islamic State claims responsibility for attack on Iraqi embassy in Kabul

KABUL (Reuters) - Militant group Islamic State claimed responsibility for an attack on the Iraqi embassy in Kabul on Monday that began with a suicide bomber blowing himself up at the main gate, allowing gunmen to enter the building and battle security forces.

Although there has been no confirmation of direct planning links with the main Islamic State movement in Iraq and Syria, the attack, just three weeks after the recapture of Mosul, underlines fears of a spillover into Afghanistan from fighting in Syria and Iraq.

Afghan security forces confronted three gunmen for hours before the Interior Ministry announced in mid-afternoon that the attack, in a normally busy business district of the capital, had been suppressed.

"The attack is finished," said Sayed Basir, a member of the special forces unit that dealt with the incident. He said the four attackers were dead, while two members of his unit were slightly wounded.

Islamic State Leader In Afghanistan Killed In A U.S. Drone Strike

Washington Post: Head of ISIS in Afghanistan killed in drone strike, U.S. officials say

A U.S. drone strike in eastern Afghanistan earlier this week killed Abu Sayed, the leader of the Islamic State’s offshoot there, U.S. officials said Friday.

A Pentagon statement said that other Islamic State members were also killed in the July 11 operation in Kunar Province and said that it “will significantly disrupt the terror group’s plans to expand its presence in Afghanistan.” The statement provided little other detail about the strike.

A U.S. official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss details about the attack, said the strike targeted a meeting and that U.S. forces had not been tracking Sayed for long.

RFE: U.S. Strike Kills IS Media Head In Eastern Afghanistan

A U.S. air strike in Afghanistan's eastern Nangahar Province killed the Islamic State (IS) extremist group's director of media, U.S. forces have said.

The June 3 air strike, which targeted a major militant hub in the province's Achin district, cut the extremist group's communications and connections to IS in Syria, a U.S. statement said on June 16.

Jawad Khan's death "will disrupt the [IS] network, degrade their recruitment process, and hinder their attempts to conduct international operations," General John Nicholson, commander of the U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said in the statement.

Reuters: Head of Islamic State in Afghanistan confirmed killed

The head of Islamic State in Afghanistan, Abdul Hasib, was killed in an operation on April 27 conducted jointly by Afghan and U.S. Special Forces in the eastern province of Nangarhar, U.S. and Afghan officials said on Sunday.

Hasib, appointed last year after his predecessor Hafiz Saeed Khan died in a U.S. drone strike, is believed to have ordered a series of high profile attacks including one in March 8 on the main military hospital in Kabul, a statement said.

Last month, a Pentagon spokesman said Hasib had probably been killed during the raid by U.S. and Afghan special forces in Nangarhar during which two U.S. army Rangers were killed, but prior to Sunday's announcement there had been no confirmation.

Khaama Press: 91 killed in Taliban and ISIS militants clash in North of Afghanistan

At least 91 insurgents have been killed as deadly clashes erupted among the Taliban insurgents and the loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group.

According to the local government officials, the majority of the casualties were inflicted to the Taliban insurgents.

Provincial governor’s spokesman Mohammad Reza Ghafoori said the clashes started in Darzab district on Tuesday and still continue between the two sides.

He said at least 76 Taliban insurgents and 15 ISIS militants have been killed so far, citing the preliminary information received by the government.

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN)Attackers dressed in medical uniforms stormed a military hospital in the heart of the Afghan capital of Kabul on Wednesday, killing more than 30 people and wounding at least 50, said Dawlat Waziri, spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Defense.

A suicide bomber set off an explosion at the south gate to the Sardar Mohammed Daud Khan hospital before three gunmen entered the building and made their way to the second and third floors, said Sediq Sediqqi, Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman.

The gunmen killed and wounded doctors and hospital employees and injured Afghan soldiers, according to an Afghan Defense Ministry statement.

ISIS Militants In Afghanistan Blamed For Kidnapping And Massacring 30 Civilians

CNN: ISIS kidnaps, kills 30 in Afghanistan

Kabul (CNN)ISIS militants have kidnapped and killed 30 people in Afghanistan's Ghor province, according to a provincial spokesman.

The group was abducted as they entered the mountains of Ghor to collect wood for winter, Abdul Hai Khatibi, the spokesman for the governor of the province, told CNN.

The kidnapped people were all shot and killed during a failed rescue attempt by security forces. One ISIS commander was killed in the fighting, according to Khatibi.
