CNN: Pakistan brought to a standstill for 'Kashmir hour' demonstrations

(CNN)Pakistanis brought the nation to a standstill at midday Friday as they gathered for "Kashmir hour" to show their solidarity with the disputed region, after India stripped the state of Jammu and Kashmir of its autonomy and reclassified it as a union territory earlier this month.

India's move was highly contentious and one that will give the government in New Delhi greater authority over the disputed Muslim-majority region.

The national anthems of both Pakistan and Kashmir blared across TV and radio stations on Friday, according to Reuters, and traffic and trains were brought to a halt as people gathered between 12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. local time.

New Delhi -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday justified his government's move to revoke Kashmir's semi-autonomous status as the picturesque Himalayan valley remained under a strict government lockdown for the 11th day. Modi said "a new approach was needed" on the territory, ownership over which has long been disputed with neighboring Pakistan, as efforts by Indian governments over the past 70 years "did not bear results."

The Indian leader did not address in his speech the mounting tension between his nation and Pakistan fuelled by his move in Kashmir, which ramped-up further Thursday with cross-border fire by the opposing military forces reportedly leaving eight people dead.

Modi addressed the nation on India's 73rd Independence Day from the ramparts of the iconic 17th century Red Fort in Delhi.

New York Times: Inside Kashmir, Cut Off From the World: ‘A Living Hell’ of Anger and Fear

SRINAGAR, Kashmir — On the streets of Srinagar, Kashmir’s biggest city, security officers tied black bandannas over their faces, grabbed their guns and took positions behind checkpoints. People glanced out the windows of their homes, afraid to step outside. Many were cutting back on meals and getting hungry.

A sense of coiled menace hung over the locked-down city and the wider region on Saturday, a day after a huge protest erupted into clashes between Kashmiris and Indian security forces.

Shops were shut. A.T.M.s had run dry. Just about all lines to the outside world — internet, mobile phones, even landlines — remained severed, rendering millions of people incommunicado.

Correspondents for The New York Times got one of the first inside views of life under lockdown in Kashmir and found a population that felt besieged, confused, frightened and furious by the seismic events of this week.

People who ventured out said they had to beg officers to cross a landscape of sandbags, battered trucks and soldiers staring at them through metal face masks. Several residents said they had been beaten up by security forces for simply trying to buy necessities like milk.

The UN has called for 'maximum restraint' in Kashmir after India imposed direct rule in the region amid heightened tensions with Pakistan.

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres called Thursday on India and Pakistan 'to refrain from taking steps that could affect the status of Jammu and Kashmir.'

His remarks came as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Kashmir region was stripped of its autonomy to free it from 'terrorism and separatism' which was encouraged by Pakistan.

Amid an increasing war of words, Pakistan looked to ease tensions saying it would not take military action against its nuclear-armed rival.

Tensions Between Pakistan And India Are Increasing Over Kashmir

Reuters: Pakistan expels Indian ambassador as Kashmir dispute escalates

ISLAMABAD/SRINAGAR, India (Reuters) - Pakistan said on Wednesday it would expel India’s ambassador and suspend bilateral trade with its arch-rival after New Delhi stripped its portion of the contested Kashmir region of special status.

Neighbors China and Pakistan, which both claim parts of Kashmir, have voiced fierce opposition to India’s removal of a constitutional provision that had allowed the country’s only Muslim-majority state to make its own laws.

Nuclear-armed India and Pakistan have twice waged war over Kashmir and in February engaged in an aerial clash. India, which has been battling insurgents there for 30 years, said the special status had hindered Kashmir’s development and it wanted to fully integrate the region with the rest of the country.

Thousands of people, including tourists and Hindu pilgrims, are leaving Indian-administered Kashmir after local officials issued a security alert.

Indian authorities warned of a "terror threat" against Hindu pilgrims heading to the Amarnath shrine.

Militants backed by Pakistan were planning an attack on the annual pilgrimage, officials have said.

India accuses Pakistan of backing militant groups based in Kashmir, something denied by Pakistan.

The 45-day pilgrimage began on 1 July and about 300,000 pilgrims have visited the cave shrine, located high in the Himalayan mountains, according to AP news agency.

Kashmir's government has advised them to leave the area "immediately", causing panic as visitors scramble to organise transport.

New York Times: Kashmir Militants Kill Again as Trouble Grows Between India and Pakistan

NEW DELHI — Militants in Kashmir struck again on Monday, killing an Indian Army major and at least three other soldiers just days after orchestrating a devastating bombing that left dozens of Indian security forces dead.

Fears are now rising that Kashmir, a disputed region that lies between India and its regional rival, Pakistan, could be sliding into an especially deadly phase again.

Diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan are breaking down; Kashmiri students are being rounded up and attacked; other young people have been charged with sedition for criticizing the Indian Army; and Indians are lashing out at Pakistani civilians, including Bollywood actors.

The recent violence in Kashmir — a majority Muslim region that is mostly controlled by India, a predominantly Hindu nation — has uncapped a wave of jingoism that is sweeping across India. The orange, white and green national flag is going up everywhere, and many people say they want revenge.

At least 40 Indian paramilitary personnel have been killed and several others wounded after a car filled with explosives rammed into a military convoy in Indian-administered Kashmir.

2018 Was The Deadliest Year In A Decade In Kashmir

Washington Post: 2018 is the deadliest year in a decade in Kashmir. Next year could be worse.

NEW DELHI — The security forces arrived in the Kashmiri village of Sirnoo in the middle of the night and surrounded their targets: three separatist militants fighting Indian rule.

Early Saturday morning, locals awakened to the sound of gunfire. As word of the clash spread, hundreds of young people converged on the area, throwing stones in an attempt to help the militants escape. Then the security forces opened fire on the crowd, killing seven and wounding dozens more. One of those killed was a 14-year-old boy.

The killings marked the deadliest single encounter this year between security forces and civilians in Indian-administered Kashmir, part of India’s only Muslim-majority state where for three decades militants have fought either for independence or to join Pakistan. The deaths also form part of a grim trend: Violence is increasing in Kashmir as India’s ruthless pursuit of militants generates alienation and anger among Kashmiri youth.

In 2018, the death toll for militants and security forces in Kashmir touched the highest point in a decade, according to official figures, with more than 324 killed so far. Human rights groups put the civilian fatalities at over 100. Almost no experts believe the situation will improve in the short term.

The incident in Sirnoo, in the district of Pulwama, illustrates the turn for the worse. As security forces carry out operations, they are frequently confronted by crowds of people who, rather than scattering, try to block their way.

New York Times: Deadly Clashes in Kashmir Between Indian Army and Militants

SHOPIAN, Kashmir — An Indian Army operation against militants fighting Indian rule in the Muslim-majority Kashmir Valley killed at least 12 militants on Sunday, the largest one-day death toll of insurgents in recent years, officials in Kashmir said.

At least three soldiers and four civilians also died, and about 70 other people were wounded in the army crackdown in the district of Shopian, according to the Kashmir authorities.

Army officials called the operation a major success. “It is a special day for our forces,” Lt. Gen. A. K. Bhatt of the Indian Army said.

Kashmir — caught in a territorial dispute between the Hindu-majority India, which controls much of the territory, and the Muslim-majority Pakistan — has endured brutal conflict for decades.

Al Jazeera: Tensions soar along India, Pakistan border in Kashmir

Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir - Two civilians and an Indian soldier were killed and twenty more wounded in the latest ceasefire violations in the border villages of Jammu region in Indian-administered Kashmir, officials said.

State police Chief Shesh Paul Vaid told Al Jazeera that the two civilians, including a 52-year-old woman, were killed in fresh shelling by Pakistani side in RS Pura sector in Jammu region on Friday morning.

"One Border Security Force (BSF) trooper has also been killed in the shelling which continues since night," Vaid said, adding that twenty civilians were also wounded.

Newsweek: Kashmir Has A New Insurgent Group: Al-Qaeda

Al-Qaeda has announced a new group in the contested Himalayan territory of Kashmir, and named as chief of the cell a young but well-known face of Kashmiri militancy.

The jihadi group's propaganda arm known as the Global Islamic Media Front reported on Thursday that 23-year-old Zakir Musa would head up the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansar Ghawzat-ul-Hind.

Kashmir is a region that both India and Pakistan lay claim to and where militants have waged an insurgency against Indian rule in the region. It has divided both countries since 1947.

L.A. Times: Violent protests erupt in Kashmir after Indian forces kill 8 suspected militants

Stone-throwing protesters clashed with security forces across the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir on Saturday after Indian soldiers killed eight suspected militants as part of a months-long crackdown in the disputed Himalayan territory.

At least one civilian was killed as police forces tried to subdue the protesters, and dozens of others were injured, according to medical officials.

Anti-Indian protests in Kashmir have grown in size and intensity in the year since the Indian army killed a charismatic young militant, Burhan Wani, in a targeted operation in July.

Scores of civilians have been killed and thousands injured, many blinded by pellets fired by Indian police and paramilitary forces struggling to maintain order in a territory that India and Pakistan have fought over for 70 years.

RT: Up to 8 killed, 100 injured in Kashmir election violence, re-polling being considered

Up to eight people were killed in Srinagar, Kashmir following police clashes with protesters during Sunday’s by-election which was already mired by separatist factions’ calls to boycott the vote in the disputed region.

Police opened fire after tear gas failed to deter protesters throwing stones, reported Reuters. At least eight people were killed with over 100 injured following clashes which took place across central Kashmir.

Speaking to the press, the state's Chief Electoral Officer Shantmanu said more than 200 incidents of violence were reported, which included “stone-pelting, petrol bomb attacks [and the] setting ablaze of a polling station."

Another Attack On An Indian Military Base In Kashmir

VOA: Soldiers, Militants Killed in Attack on Indian Camp in Jammu and Kashmir

NEW DELHI — Three Indian soldiers and three attackers were killed when armed militants stormed an army base in the northern Jammu and Kashmir state early Tuesday. The latest attack is likely to further heighten tensions between India and Pakistan, whose ties hit a low point following a September attack on an Indian army camp in the disputed Kashmir region.

The soldiers and militants were killed in a gunbattle that raged for many hours after militants lobbed grenades and opened fire while trying to enter the Nagrota base, a major army camp that is one of the four command centers in Kashmir.

Nagrota lies about 20 kilometers from Jammu on the main highway that connects Kashmir’s two main cities of Srinagar and Jammu.

Defense Ministry spokesman, Manish Mehta said “early morning the encounter took place. The situation is under control.”

JAMMU: Two Army jawans were killed and three others — two soldiers and a woman — were injured as Pakistani army opened fire in a bid to facilitate two infiltration bids along the Line of Control (LoC) in Krishna Ghati and Poonch sectors of Poonch district on Sunday.

The Indian Army said that while the infiltration bids were foiled, it has also inflicted heavy damage to several Pakistani posts across the Line of Control in Poonch sector .

BBC: Militants attack Indian army base in Kashmir 'killing 17'

Militants have attacked an army base in Indian-administered Kashmir, killing at least 17 soldiers, the army says.

Four of the attackers were killed, an army officer told the BBC. Carrying guns and grenades they stormed a base in Uri, close to the Line of Control with Pakistan in a pre-dawn ambush.

Indian Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh reacted by calling Pakistan a "terrorist state".

It is the deadliest attack on security forces in Kashmir in two decades.

It comes as violent protests against Indian rule in the disputed region continue, with a strict curfew imposed.

Last week’s shooting of independence leader Burhan Wani continues to spark violence in Indian-administered Kashmir

Violent protests in Kashmir triggered by the death of a popular secessionist leader at the hands of Indian security forces continued into a third day on Monday, and the number of people killed rose to 23.

In the disputed region’s worst outbreak of civilian unrest in six years, five more people, including a teenage girl, were killed on Sunday night.

The imposition of a curfew and the disabling of internet and mobile phone networks have not been enough to stop the continuing violence. Rail services, school examinations and a large Hindu pilgrimage to a mountain cave have all been suspended because of the crisis.

Reuters: Indian police says shoot dead militant leader in Jammu & Kashmir

Indian security forces said they shot dead separatist militant leader Burhan Wani in northern Jammu and Kashmir state on Friday, a figure well known for his calls to arms on social media.

As news of the 22-year-old's death spread, crowds pelted police with stones in Srinagar, the state's summer capital, and in some southern reaches of the state, officials said.

Authorities ordered restrictions on the movement of people and traffic in parts of Srinagar on Saturday and police said they had placed several separatist leaders under house arrest to prevent trouble.
