New Details Emerge About The 2020 Amphibious Assault Ship Bonhomme Richard Fire

Defense News: New details emerge about the 2020 Bonhomme Richard fire, ahead of censure of three-star

WASHINGTON — The initial response to the July 2020 fire that destroyed the multibillion-dollar amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard was uncoordinated and hampered by confusion as to which admiral should cobble together Navy and civilian firefighters, according to new information from the then-head of Naval Surface Forces.

The discombobulation in those early hours meant sailors may have missed a small window to contain the fire in a storage area.

One admiral who said he lacked authority to issue an order pleaded with the ship’s commanding officer to get back on the ship and fight the fire, when the CO and his crew were waiting on the pier.

And when that admiral — now-retired Vice Adm. Rich Brown — found the situation so dire that he called on other another command to intervene, it refused, Brown said in an interview.

The United States has recovered an F-35C warplane that fell into the South China Sea in a landing mishap in January, the U.S. Navy said on Thursday, fearing China would get involved in its retrieval.

The wreckage was recovered from a depth of about 12,400 feet using a remotely operated vehicle to attach rigging to the aircraft, which was then hoisted up by a diving support ship, the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet said in an email.

It will be delivered to a nearby military installation to aid in the ongoing investigation of the incident, the statement said.

No Safety Advisory From The US Army After Two Soldiersd Die In Rigorous Diving Training Exercises

The Combat Diver Qualification Course is known for its high drop-out rate

Daily Mail: US Army FAILS to issue safety advisory after two soldiers die in rigorous diving training exercises at Special Ops course

* The US Army has failed to issue a safety advisory or halt trainings after two Special Forces soldiers died during a diving training exercise

* Staff Sgt. Micah Walker, 31, died during the Combat Diver Qualification Course at the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida, on July 27

* He was found unresponsive during the water-treading segment of the course

* Typically when service members die, the US Army halts the trainings, which it has not done following these two deaths

* The Army has not even issued a safety advisory for the course

* As part of the training, soldiers have to disentangle their breathing apparatuses while wearing a blacked-out mask so they cannot see

* But funding for the course has decreased over the past two decades and the equipment is now out of date

The U.S. Army has failed to issue a safety advisory or halt trainings after two Special Forces operators died during a rigorous diving training exercise two months apart.

Staff Sgt. Micah Walker, 31, died during the Combat Diver Qualification Course at the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida, on July 27, after he was found unresponsive during the water-treading segment of the course.

Just two months later, Staff Sgt. Paul Lincoln Olmstead, 29, also died during the same training at the Joe Swing Park Reservoir at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was conducting a surface swim as part of the course on September 23 when officials say he went under water and never resurfaced.
