Daily Mail: Biden sends classified 'Ghost' drones similar to tank-busting Switchblades in latest $800million weapons package to Ukraine: Air Force has rapidly developed loitering warhead that flies into targets and explodes

* The U.S. is providing 121 Phoenix Ghost tactical drones for Ukraine

* They are part of the latest $800 million aid package

* U.S. also is providing 72 155mm Howitzers and 144,000 artillery rounds

* Comes as Russia is launching a new phase of its Ukraine invasion

* Biden said the new phase would feature different geography but similear 'brutality' by Russia's forces

* Air Force rapidly developed the drones to meet Kiev's requirements

The Pentagon announced that the U.S. is putting a new weapon in Ukraine's arsenal as it pushes back against Russia's relentless attacks: previously classified Phoenix Ghost drones that have been specially tailored for the conflict.

Little information was available about the weapons system, which President Joe Biden only referenced briefly in remarks announcing the latest $800 million aid package.

The package includes 121 Phoenix Ghost tactical drones, according to the Pentagon, which says they have capabilities similar to the 'Switchblade' drones the U.S. included in the previous military aid package.

Breaking Defense: No easy answer for ramping up Stinger production, Pentagon No. 2 says

“There are some very specific issues with regard to Stinger and some obsolescence issues that we have to overcome,” Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks said Tuesday. “That's because we in the US, we're focusing ourselves forward on new capability."

LOS ANGELES: Obsolete parts and workforce issues are presenting a problem for the United States as it considers ramping up production of the shoulder mounted Stinger anti-aircraft system in order to surge weapons for Ukraine and replenish US stocks, the Pentagon’s No. 2 official said Tuesday.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, US and NATO-provided munitions such as the Raytheon-made Stinger have been integral for Ukrainian forces as they attempt to retain control of their airspace against the larger, better equipped Russian military.

CNN: Ukrainian presidential adviser calls for heavier weaponry as Russia shifts military focus

(CNN)As the Russian military shifts its campaign to focus on the east and south of Ukraine, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak has called on the US and its allies to deliver heavier weaponry to the ex-Soviet nation.

"After the rapid retreat of the Russians from Kyiv and Chernihiv, it is clear that Russia has prioritized another tactic -- to move east/south, to control large occupied territories (not only in Donetsk and Luhansk regions) and to gain a strong foothold there," Podolyak said on Saturday.

"They have established in the east and south and are dictating harsh conditions," added Podolyak. "So we definitely can't do without heavy weapons if we want to unblock the east and Kherson and send [back] the Russians as far as possible."

The Hill: U.S. troops deployed to Europe after Russian invasion to stay in place ‘a while longer’

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has decided that thousands of service members deployed to Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will stay in place “for a while longer,” Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said Thursday.

Troops deployed to Poland as part of the 82nd Airborne Division and sailors in the USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group sent to the Mediterranean will stay put, Kirby told reporters.

He said the temporary deployments have been extended as Austin “wants to keep his options open” and avoid hard end dates so U.S. officials are “able to monitor the situation on the ground and make the best and most flexible decisions in real time.”

The Hill: Biden unveils $813 billion spending request for defense, national security

President Biden is officially proposing $813.3 billion in defense and national security spending as part of his budget request for fiscal 2023.

The request, which was first reported late last week, comes as the U.S. looks to counter a long list of international threats, including China and Russia.

It also comes amid a push to modernize the military, including optimizing the country's naval fleet, supporting Army modernization initiatives and investing in the development of hypersonic long-range strike capabilities to bolster deterrence.

AP: Ukraine war may lead to rethinking of US defense of Europe

WASHINGTON (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine and his push to upend the broader security order in Europe may lead to a historic shift in American thinking about defense of the continent.

Depending on how far Putin goes, this could mean a buildup of U.S. military power in Europe not seen since the Cold War.

The prospect of a bigger U.S. military footprint in Europe is a remarkable turnaround from just two years ago.

The Guardian: EU leaders announce intention to collectively rearm in face of Putin threat

Versailles declaration says Russia’s war in Ukraine has heralded ‘tectonic shift in European history’

At a summit in the former royal palace, the 27 heads of state and government said on Friday that the invasion of Ukraine had shown the urgent need for the EU to take responsibility for its own security and to rid itself of dependencies on others.

The Guardian: Clash between Poland and US over MiG-29s reveals tensions in escalating war

Analysis: the public spat over planes is a setback and the upshot of this mini-debacle is that Russia retains air superiority

The buck-passing between Poland and the US over the possible use of elderly MiG-29s to hit Russian forces inside Ukraine is one of the west’s few diplomatic failures of the past month.

It also raises questions about how far European countries are prepared to escalate militarily before they believe they will touch a dangerous Russian tripwire.

Military.com: Global Weapons Pipeline into Ukraine Is Being Managed by US European Command

The military's U.S. European Command has become the organizer of a global coalition of nations sending weapons and security aid to Ukraine as it fends off Russia's efforts to conquer the country.

The command, based in Germany under Air Force Gen. Tod Wolters, is coordinating shipments to the war zone from 14 countries.

That includes the latest $350 million in aid from the U.S., as well as newly pledged support from Germany and Sweden, as outrage over Russian President Vladimir Putin's move on Ukraine intensifies.
