This Year's Nobel Peace Prize Is Awarded To Ales Bialiatski From Belarus, The Russian Human Rights Organization Memorial And The Ukrainian Human Rights Organization Center For Civil Liberties

The Guardian: Nobel peace prize given to human rights activists in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine

Jailed campaigner Ales Bialiatski, Memorial and Center for Civil Liberties win award that will be seen as condemnation of Putin

The jailed Belarusian human rights activist Ales Bialiatski, the Russian human rights organisation Memorial and the Ukrainian human rights organisation Center for Civil Liberties have won the 2022 Nobel peace prize, in an award the committee said was to honour champions of “peaceful coexistence” during the most tumultuous period in Europe since the second world war.

“The peace prize laureates represent civil society in their home countries,” said Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel committee. “They have for many years promoted the right to criticise power and protect the fundamental rights of citizens.”

Black Lives Matter Movement Nominated For The 2021 Nobel Peace Prize

Norwegian cites global impact of BLM in raising awareness and consciousness of racial injustice

The Black Lives Matter movement has been nominated for the 2021 Nobel peace prize for the way its call for systemic change has spread around the world. In his nomination papers, Norwegian MP Petter Eide said the movement had forced countries outside the US to grapple with racism within their own societies.

“I find that one of the key challenges we have seen in America, but also in Europe and Asia, is the kind of increasing conflict based on inequality. Black Lives Matter has become a very important worldwide movement to fight racial injustice,” Eide said. “They have had a tremendous achievement in raising global awareness and consciousness about racial injustice.”

WNU Editor: The last Black Lives Matter protest that I personally saw in Montreal was a protest that was focused on damaging cars, breaking windows, intimidating people who got in the way, and toppling the statue of Canada's first Prime Minister (link her). And this Norwegian MP decided this group deserves a Nobel Peace Prize nomination !?!?!?!

Does The UN's World Food Programme (WFP) Deserve This Year's Nobel Peace Prize?

WNU Editor: I got sick inside when I learned that this year's Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the United Nations World Food Programme. As a former UN worker myself I am too well familiar with the corruption/nepotism/and incompetence of the UN. In the case of the World Food Program, it has a long and sordid history of corruption going back years .... The U.N. Food Programme's Rampant Corruption (Newsweek). But this corruption pales in comparison to numerous recent reports that sexual exploitation and abuse is rife in this organization .... Another UN Entity, Another Sex Scandal (Code Blue). More here .... World Food Program Roiled by Discrimination and Abuse, Survey Finds (Foreign Policy). As I said in the beginning. Giving this prize to an organization that has a long track record of horrendous abuse while doing little if anything to address it .... it is just not right.

Update: Just found this gem .... WFP needs ‘systemic overhaul’ to limit abusive behaviour: external review (The New Humanitarian).

President Trump Is Nominated A Second Time For The Nobel Peace Prize

The Hill: Trump nominated a second time for Nobel Peace Prize

A member of the Swedish Parliament on Friday nominated President Trump and the governments of Kosovo and Serbia for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize over economic cooperation and trade talks.

“I have nominated the US Gov. and the governments of Kosovo and Serbia for the Nobel Peace Prize for their joint work for peace and economic development, through the cooperation agreement signed in the White House,” Magnus Jacobsson announced in a tweet.

“Trade and communications are important building blocks for peace,” the Swedish elected official added in the post, along with a copy of the full letter supporting Trump’s nomination.

President Trump Nominated For The 2021 Nobel Peace Prize

SCMP/France 24: Trump thanks Norwegian politician who nominated him for Nobel Peace Prize

* The Norwegian MP cited Trump’s role in brokering an agreement to normalise relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates
* Trump has previously complained that he has not been considered more seriously for the peace prize

US President Donald Trump revelled on Wednesday in his nomination by a right-wing Norwegian politician for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

“Thank you!” he said in one of a flurry of tweets and retweets celebrating the nomination, which cited Trump’s role in brokering an agreement to normalise relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

Norwegian member of parliament Christian Tybring-Gjedde said he has nominated the Republican due to the “unique and historic agreement between Israel and the UAE – an agreement that, we hope, can be extended to other Arab countries so that we can have lasting peace in the Middle East.”

A member of the right-wing, anti-immigration Progress Party, Tybring-Gjedde is the deputy chair of the Norwegian parliament’s committee on foreign and defence affairs.

2018 Nobel Peace Prize Winners Urge Global Action On Wartime Sexual Violence

ABC News Online: Nobel Peace Prize winners urge world to step up when combatting wartime sexual violence

One of the winners of this year's Nobel Peace Prize says the attention the prize has drawn to sexual violence against women in war zones must be followed by action against the abuses.

Dr Denis Mukwege spoke on Sunday at a news conference with Nadia Murad of Iraq, with whom he shared the 9 million Swedish kronor ($1.9 million) prize.

The doctor was honoured for his work helping sexually abused women at the hospital he founded in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ms Murad, a Yazidi, won for her advocacy for sex abuse victims after being kidnapped by Islamic State militants.

Will South Korean President Kim Jong-un And North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un Kim Be Awarded The Nobel Peace Prize This Friday?

ABC News Online: Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in are among the bookies' favourites for the Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize is set to be announced tonight and one of the bookies' favourite pairs may come as a surprise — controversial North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

A total of 331 individuals and organisations have been nominated this year, but with the official list of candidates a tightly-kept secret, who might win is anyone's bet.

On Friday morning, Australian betting website SportsBet had the Korean leaders as its second-favourite at short odds, just behind German leader Angela Merkel.

Key Member Of The Norwegian Nobel Committee Is Making It Clear That President Trump Will Not Get A Nobel Prize For Beginning The Peace Process On The Korean Peninsula

Human rights watchdog, the Council of Europe, says US President Donald Trump is no longer the moral leader of the free world

AFP: Trump no longer 'moral leader of free world': top rights body

US President Donald Trump is "no longer the moral leader of his country or the world", the human rights watchdog, the Council of Europe, said Wednesday amid global outrage over the White House's policy of separating migrant children from their parents.

"What is happening at the (US-Mexico) border where he (Trump) is separating children from their parents is a sign that he is no longer the moral leader of his country or the world," the Council of Europe's secretary general, Thorbjorn Jagland, told Norwegian broadcaster TV2.

"Everything he does excludes him from the role American presidents have always had," Jagland said during a trip to Moscow.

"He can not speak on behalf of the so-called free world."

South Korean President: President Trump Deserves To Get The Nobel Peace Prize For His Work On North Korea

Business Insider: South Korea's president calls for Trump to get the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on North Korea

* President Trump should win a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end a standoff with North Korea over nuclear weapons, according to South Korea's president.
* Moon Jae-in said Monday: "President Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize. What we need is only peace."
* Trump threatened war with North Korea several times and pushed harsh sanctions on the country after its nuclear and missile tests.
* Moon thinks that hardline move could have tipped the balance toward a deal.

President Donald Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end the standoff with North Korea over its nuclear-weapons program, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Monday.

"President Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize. What we need is only peace," Moon told a cabinet meeting, according to a media release.

Moon met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Friday, where the pair pledged to end hostilities and work toward the "complete denuclearization" at the first inter-Korean summit since 2007.

Update #2: Trump Should Get Nobel Prize, South Korean Leader Says -- Wall Street Journal

WNU Editor: As I had mentioned in a previous post .... it is waaaayyyy too early to think about who gets a Nobel Prize or not. But the South Korean President's remarks does tell me one thing .... behind the scenes President Trump probably played a far greater role in getting North Korea to the negotiating table than what we have been told. Afterall .... President Moon did try last year to get Kim Jong-Un to the negotiating table, and he failed miserably. It was only when the White House made it a priority at the end of 2017 to push for the imposition of real and serious sanctions that North Korea responded to President Moon's invitation to the Olympics .... thereby leading to last week's summit. As to my own personal opinion ... if everything does work out and the process of reconciliation and peace on the Korean peninsula does occur .... the Nobel Peace Prize sould be given to Trump, Xi, Moon, and Kim.

Does President Trump Deserve A Noblel Peace Prize?

NYMag: The Campaign for Donald Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize Has Begun

On Friday, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and South Korean president Moon Jae-in came together for a historic meeting that resulted in a once-unimaginable pledge: The two nations will work to officially end the Korean War and denuclearize the peninsula.

Who deserves credit for this momentous meeting and the push toward peace? Donald Trump, says South Korean foreign minister Kang Kyung-wha. “He’s been determined to come to grips with this from day one,” she recently told CNN.

And he may soon have a Nobel Peace Prize to show for it. Trump and Kim are currently the favorites to win the prize, according to one British oddsmaker, and some of Trump’s aides are telling reporters that a lasting thaw between North and South Korea should win Trump the award.

WNU Editor: Some are saying that President Trump deserves more an Oscar rather than a Nobel Prize. What's my take .... waaayyyy too early to make any predictions.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner ICAN Warns That Nuclear War Is Only 'A Tantrum Away'

Time: 'We Can Take Them Apart.' ICAN Chief Beatrice Fihn Accepts Nobel Peace Prize for Group's Work to Ban Nuclear Weapons

When Beatrice Fihn received a call on Oct. 6 informing the 35-year-old Swede that her group, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, she suspected a possible prank. Not that you should blame her—ICAN is just 10 years old, and the group’s aims can seem positively fanciful: the complete elimination of the world’s roughly 15,000 nuclear warheads. But that call from the Norwegian Nobel Committee was real, and so is Fihn’s goal—which may be less quixotic than it seems.

Nobel Peace Prize Awarded To The 'International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons'

New York Times: Nobel Peace Prize Goes to Group Opposing Nuclear Weapons

In a year when threats from nuclear weapons seemed to draw closer, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to an advocacy group behind the first treaty to prohibit them.

The group, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, a Geneva-based coalition of disarmament activists, was honored for its efforts to advance the negotiations that led to the treaty, which was reached in July at the United Nations.

“The organization is receiving the award for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its groundbreaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said in a statement.

Nobel Peace Prize Awarded To Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos

Reuters: In boost for faltering process, Colombia's Santos wins Nobel Peace Prize

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos won the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his efforts to end a 52-year-old war with Marxist rebels, a surprise choice and a show of support after Colombians rejected a peace accord last Sunday.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said Santos had brought one of the longest civil wars in modern history significantly closer to a peaceful solution, but there was still a danger the peace process could collapse.

The award excluded FARC guerrilla leader Rodrigo Londono, better known by his nom de guerre Timochenko, who signed the peace accord with Santos in Cartagena on Sept. 26.

A List Of Nobel Peace Prize Winners Throughout History

New York Times: Nobel Peace Prize Winners Throughout History

Alfred Nobel’s 1895 will established a prize for “the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” The prize was first awarded in 1901.

One person, the Vietnamese diplomat Le Duc Tho, has declined the prize. Three winners — the German pacifist and journalist Carl von Ossietzky, the Burmese politician Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo — were under arrest at the time of the award. There has been one posthumous prize, in 1961, to the United Nations secretary general, Dag Hammarskjold, who died in a plane crash that year.

WNU Editor: I groaned when Mikhail Gorbachev was awarded the prize in 1990. The person who should have been awarded that prize (or at least with Gorbachev) was President Reagan .... but I guess for the Nobel Committee that was a bridge too far. Another person who should have been awarded the prize was John Paul II and the significant role that he played in bringing down the Communist regimes in eastern Europe .... again .... I guess his conservative religious beliefs was something that the Nobel Committee could not digest.

Who Deserves This Year's Nobel Peace Prize?

Reuters: Pope Francis, anti-nuclear activists among Nobel Peace Prize contenders

Pope Francis and a line-up of anti-nuclear campaigners headed lists of favorites to win the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize on the eve of Friday's announcement.

The Geneva-based International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) was named as a leading contender for the $972,000 prize by Norway's state broadcaster NRK and by Nobeliana, a website run by historians who specialize in tracking the award.

NRK said Pope Francis' opposition to nuclear weapons boosted his chances, alongside his help in brokering a deal between the United States and Cuba, and his encyclical on climate change. Nobeliana mentioned his calls for social justice.

A Nobel Peace Prize For U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry And Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif?

Accolade: Barack Obama accepts the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo December 2009

Washington Free Beacon: Nobel Prize Rumors Put Focus On Kerry-Iran Coziness

Secretary of state’s legacy increasingly linked to Iranian regime fortunes.

Growing speculation that John Kerry will receive a Nobel Peace Prize for finalizing the Iranian nuclear deal is generating renewed criticism of his close relationship with the Iranian foreign minister, Javad Zarif, a key public face for the theocratic regime who is rumored to be a probable co-recipient with Kerry.

Rumors have been circulating for months that Kerry and Zarif will be co-selected for the prize. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, a leading Swedish think-tank, recommended in July that the two be selected for the Nobel in 2016.

WNU Editor: Do they deserve this recognition .... no. The Nobel website is here, and this year's Nobel peace prize will be announced on October 9, 2015.
