UN Report Says 100 Million Have Been Forced From Their Homes

VOA: UN: Record Numbers Displaced by War, Persecution 

Geneva — A record 89.3 million people had been driven from their homes by war, violence, persecution, and human rights abuse by the end of 2021, up 8% from the previous year, according to the U.N. refugee agency’s annual Global Trends report. 

U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi says the figures are made even worse when the number of people forced to flee by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is included. 

"Ukraine has displaced anyway between 12 and 14 million people, depending on how you count them. So, the figure has exceeded 100 million. This is due to a rise in conflict and crisis," he said.

Euronews: A record-breaking 100 million people have fled conflicts around the world, says United Nations 

The number of people forced to flee conflict, violence, human rights violations and persecution has crossed the milestone of 100 million for the first time on record, propelled by the war in Ukraine and other deadly conflicts, the UN refugee agency said Monday. 

UNHCR said the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide approached 90 million by the end of 2021, propelled by new waves of violence or protracted conflict in countries including Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Myanmar, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Congo.

Steve Mollman, Quartz: It’s time to start considering what a North Korean refugee crisis would look like

There’s an undeveloped strip of land on the Korean peninsula where nature thrives, but wild animals occasionally explode. Walking across it would be a bad idea.

Known as the demilitarized zone (DMZ), it divides South Korea and North Korea, nations that technically have been at war since the 1950s. Running 240 km (150 miles) across the Korean peninsula, and measuring about 4 km (2.5 miles) wide, it is heavily guarded by two of the world’s largest militaries, strewn with landmines, and arguably the most fortified border on the planet.

WNU Editor: If the North Korean government collapses .... I will be surprised if there is a massive refugee rush to China. There will be some .... but the millions that some are envisaging will not happen. What I expect is that most people will stay put .... and hope for the best .... and they will only flee if the situation becomes very desperate over a period of time. What will cause a massive refugee crisis is war .... and the flow will be from both North and South Korea. North Koreans will flee to China by foot and limited transport .... and that number will be in the millions. For those trapped in South Korea .... many will go where they will be accepted .... but logistical limitations (boats/air-planes/etc.) will probably be limited for South Koreans .... especially if the entire country becomes classified as a war zone. And in the event of a North Korean victory .... the South Korean refugee crisis will make the fall of South Vietnam and the refugee crisis from that disaster look like a cakewalk.

The number of forcibly displaced people worldwide will "far surpass" a record 60 million this year, the UN says.

The report by the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said "one in every 122 humans is today someone who has been forced to flee their homes".

The figure includes 20.2 million refugees, the highest total since 1992, the UNHCR added.

The numbers were mainly driven by the Syrian war, conflict in Ukraine and other protracted conflicts, it said.

Is The U.S. Discriminating Against Christian Refugees?

Washington Times: U.S. ‘discriminates’ against Christian refugees, accepts 96% Muslims, 3% Christians

Less than 3 percent of the Syrian refugees admitted to the United States so far are Christian and 96 percent are Muslim, the result of a referral system that Republican Sen. Tom Cotton says “unintentionally discriminates” against Christians.

State Department figures released Monday showed that the current system overwhelmingly favors Muslim refugees. Of the 2,184 Syrian refugees admitted to the United States so far, only 53 are Christians while 2,098 are Muslim, the Christian News Service reported.

Mr. Cotton and Sen. John Boozman, both Arkansas Republicans, called Monday for a moratorium on resettlements, a White House report on vetting procedures, and a re-evaluation of the refugee-referral process.

WNU Editor: The Christians are now the most persecuted group in Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East .... and if there is a group that should be prioritized ... it is them. But .... apparently .... not in the eyes of this White House.

Norwegian Refugee Council: A record 38 million internally displaced worldwide

A record-breaking 38 million people have been displaced within their own country by conflict or violence. This is the equivalent of the total populations of London, New York and Beijing combined.

“These are the worst figures for forced displacement in a generation, signalling our complete failure to protect innocent civilians” said Secretary General Jan Egeland.

Today, the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), part of NRC, launched its Global Overview 2015: People internally displaced by conflict and violence at the United Nations in Geneva. With internal displacement figures reaching a record high for the third year in a row, the report also documents that 11 million people were newly displaced by violent events throughout 2014.

Millions Are Fleeing The Unrest And Wars Of The Middle East

WNU Editor: The numbers are staggering .... 16.7 million refugees worldwide .... a further 33.3 million people are “internally displaced” within their own war-torn countries .... and a good number of these people are in North Africa and the Middle East. Most of these refugees have their eyes on Europe, but Europe has its own problems, and are not prepared (or willing) to accept millions ... if not tens of millions .... of refugees where significant numbers have shown an unwillingness to assimilate into the societies that they fled to.

I must also disagree with Patrick Kingsley's title for his post .... it is not the Arab Spring that brought about this wave of refugees .... it is violent radical Islam, sectarian divisions between Sunni - Shiite communities, the "cleansing" of ethnic and religious minorities, and the reaction of authoritarian governments that has brought about this humanitarian crisis.
