U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham Boasts That 3% Of The US Defense Budget Has Destroyed Half Of The Russian Army

The New Voice of Ukraine: Ukraine used 3% of US defense budget to destroy half of Russian army — Lindsey Graham

Having spent less than 3% of annual U.S. military budget in security assistance, Ukraine managed to cut Russia’s combat capacity in half, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said at a press conference in Kyiv on Aug. 23.

Earlier on that day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with three U.S. senators visiting Kyiv — Richard Blumenthal, Lindsey Graham, and Elizabeth Warren.

According to Zelenskyy, the discussion focused on improving Ukraine's defense capabilities.

"Discussed the situation at the front and the urgent issue of further strengthening Ukraine’s defense capability," the president said in a Facebook post.

At the press conference, Graham highlighted that the United States had spent less than 3% of its annual military budget to aid Ukraine in its war against Russia. He noted that the Ukrainian Defense Forces "have destroyed half of the Russian army."

WNU Editor: For the past year US politicians, military leaders, pundits, and the main stream media have been pushing the narrative that the Russian army is finished .... they have run out of missiles/artillery shells, and equipment, while suffering hundreds of thousands killed and wounded. Of course the situation on the front is different, and I certainly do not see the Russian army degraded to the level that US Senator Graham is boasting about.

But U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham does have a point.

The US spent almost $8 trillion fighting the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, but they have only spent a small fraction of that for the war in Ukraine. The US can pump tens, if not hundreds of billions more to support Ukraine in this war, and they can do it for years. I know that the sentiment in Moscow is that they are expecting this type of US commitment, which is why some Russian commentators are now saying this war can last for ten more years.

But at what cost?

Senator Graham looks at this war from a financial point of view, but in Ukraine this expenditure of 3% of the US defense budget has destroyed the country. Sighhhh .... A third of the country's population has now left, the infrastructure is gone, hundreds of thousands killed and wounded, and should the war end today, the eastern part of the country will be a wasteland of unexploded ordinance and U.S./British depleted uranium shells.

Not bad for 3%.

Iranian Broadcaster Says Iran Will Buy Advanced SU-35 Fighter Jets From Russia

Reuters: Iran to buy Su-35 fighter jets from Russia - Iranian broadcaster

DUBAI (Reuters) -Iran has reached a deal to buy advanced Su-35 fighter planes from Russia, Iranian state media said on Saturday, expanding a relationship that has seen Iranian-built drones used in Russia's war on Ukraine.

"The Sukhoi-35 fighter planes are technically acceptable to Iran and Iran has finalised a contract for their purchase," the broadcaster IRIB quoted Iran's mission to the United Nations in New York as saying.

IRIB's report did not carry any Russian confirmation of the deal, details of which were not disclosed.

The mission said Iran had also inquired about buying military aircraft from several other unnamed countries, IRIB reported. Iran's purchase of Russian fighter jets was first reported by news website Semafor on Thursday.

A Look At The Western Armor Being Sent (Or Not Sent) To Ukraine?

RFE: Marders, Leopards, Abrams, Bradleys: What's All This New Western Weaponry Being Sent (Or Not Sent) To Ukraine?

In a flurry of announcements, some of Ukraine's major Western allies pledged this week to send advanced armored combat vehicles to help Kyiv in its fight against Russia's invasion.

Both the United States and Germany said they would provide new powerful weapons to Kyiv: 50 M2 Bradley fighting vehicles from Washington and 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles from Berlin.

The January 5 announcement came a day after France made a similar pledge to send new weapons -- AMX-10 RC armored reconnaissance vehicles -- in a development that marks a clear escalation of Western military support.

Indian Prime Minister Modi Cancels Meeting With Putin Over Ukraine War

Narendra Modi and Vladimir Putin. kremlin.ru

Bloomberg: Modi to Skip Annual Putin Summit Over Ukraine Nuke Threats

(Bloomberg) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi won’t be holding an annual in-person summit with Vladimir Putin after the Russian president threatened to use nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The relationship between India and Russia remains strong but trumpeting the friendship at this point may not be beneficial for Modi, said a senior official with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue.

It would mark only the second time the leaders of India and Russia haven’t met face to face since 2000, when the relationship was elevated to a strategic partnership. The summit, usually held in December, was canceled just once in 2020 at the height of the pandemic.

“It won’t be this year,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said of prospects for a Putin-Modi summit, the state-run Tass news service reported later Friday.

Is Ukraine Ignoring Military Advice And Recommendations From The Pentagon?

Moon of Alabama: Ukraine - A Second 'Counteroffensive' Contrary To U.S. Advice - IAEA Report

The Ukrainian 'counteroffensive' in the southern Kherson region has made little progress and binds a lot of Ukrainian resources and available units.

Despite that, and against advice from the U.S. military, Ukraine has now launched a second 'counteroffensive' in the north-eastern Kharkiv region of Ukraine.

WNU Editor: I am skeptical of the above report. The U.S. is the country that is supplying the most weapons, actionable intelligence, and funds to Ukraine. Not the U.K. or anyone else. I am sure the U.S. has a lot of strings to this aid, and taking their advice and recommendations is one of them.

So is the Pentagon against this second counter-offensive? Maybe. But in this case my gut is telling me that it is the US State Department and the White House that is pushing this new front, and they outrank the Pentagon.

Russian Defence Spending Leaps 40%

FILE PHOTO: A view shows an armoured convoy of pro-Russian troops outside Donetsk

Reuters: With troops in Ukraine, Russia's defence spending leaps 40%

(Reuters) - Russia's defence spending was up nearly 40% in the first four months of the year, according to preliminary data released by the finance ministry on Wednesday, almost three months into Moscow's large-scale military campaign in Ukraine.

Russia spent 1.7 trillion roubles ($26.4 billion) on defence between January and April, almost half the 3.5 trillion roubles, or 2.6% of GDP, budgeted for all of 2022.

The ministry had initially forecast a budget surplus of 1% of GDP, or 1.3 trillion roubles, for 2022, but now expects a deficit of at least 1.6 trillion roubles, allowing for support payouts to counter the effect of an unprecedented barrage of Western economic sanctions.

Russian ambassador to Israel Anatoly Viktorov left the Knesset plenum after MKs began criticizing Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

Anatoly Viktorov, Russia’s ambassador to Israel, stormed out of the Knesset plenum on Tuesday after Knesset members attacked Russia for its invasion of Ukraine during Victory Day celebrations at the Israeli parliament, Israeli media reported.

According to the report, one of the MKs who attacked Russia in the plenum was Yisrael Beytenu’s Ukrainian-born Evgeny Sova, who called Russia’s war on Ukraine a “slap in the face for our grandparents who fought the Nazis.”

The ambassador reportedly quickly left the plenum after several MKs began speaking about the ongoing war in eastern Europe and claiming Russia is committing war crimes on Ukrainian soil.

Pope Francis Says NATO May Have 'Pushed' Russia To invade Ukraine

Politico: Pope says NATO may have caused Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Francis says transatlantic military alliance was ‘barking’ at Russia’s door.

ROME — Pope Francis said that NATO “barking” at Russia’s door may have led to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine — and said he has offered to meet the Russian president in Moscow.

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Francis reflected on Russia’s lethal aggression toward its neighbor and said while he might not go as far as saying NATO’s presence in nearby countries “provoked” Moscow, it “perhaps facilitated” the invasion.

Francis also condemned the “brutality” of the war and compared it to Rwanda’s civil war in the 1990s, which resulted in a genocide of the Tutsi minority.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu Appears On TV Dispelling Rumors On his Health

Daily Mail: Tired-looking Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu, 66, appears on TV as Kremlin battles to dispel rumours that he has suffered a heart attack

* Sergei Shoigu, 66, appeared tired with a raspy voice in a broadcasted meeting

* The Russian defence minister read from notes in an apparent crisis session

* There is also speculation that Shoigu had sought to resign at the start of the war

Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu appeared tense and tired as he was today shown on TV chairing a meeting as the Kremlin sought to dispel swirling rumours that he had suffered a heart attack.

The wax-faced 66-year-old army general, whose voice was rough and raspy, was reading from notes in an apparent crisis session to obtain more cash for his disastrous war from the Finance Ministry.

There was no immediate proof of when the televised Shoigu session broadcast took place, although it clearly referred to the 'special military operation' - Kremlin-speak for the war - underway in Ukraine.

Ukraine Russia War: A Live Analysis From Task & Purpose

WNU Editor: A good and unbiased review and analysis on the Russia-Ukraine war, and what to expect next.

On a side note.

In this war the metric that I am focused on is control of territory'. After five days of war the Russian zone of control is increasing, albeit slowly and begrudgingly.

It is also important that I stay flexible and not rigid in my thinking, especially in this conflict.

Media reports from both sides are being presented to focus on their own narrative at that moment in time, truthful or not. And here is an easy prediction. This will only intensify as the war progresses.

I should know. This blog has been covering wars and conflicts for 15 years, and I have lost count on how many times I have been wrong relying on the news sources that were available. This current war is no different. The key is to present both sides even if both sides hate what you are doing, and to continue on because the news cycle is changing by the hour.

I should also admit that covering this war is personally very difficult for me. It is very draining, and there are times where I just want to walk away and take a break from it.

This war has split my family. I think there are ruptures that will never be repaired. And the madness is getting worse.

In my case I am getting flak from both sides. But I have a very thick skin, and I am blunt. I have always been the odd person in my family, and they all know very clearly that I am currently mad at all of them, and I hate (really hate) the madness that is consuming them and both nations right now.

Kremlin Decline Ukraine's Offer For Talks On Border Tensions

BBC: Ukraine seeks meeting with Russia within 48 hours to discuss build-up

Ukraine has called for a meeting with Russia and other members of a key European security group over the escalating tensions on its border.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Russia had ignored formal requests to explain the build-up of troops.

He said the next step was requesting a meeting within the next 48 hours for transparency about Russia's plans.

Russia has denied any plans to invade Ukraine despite the build-up of some 100,000 soldiers on Ukraine's borders.

But with the US saying Moscow could begin with aerial bombardments "at any time" more than a dozen nations have urged their citizens to leave Ukraine.

Russia Have Already Started Their Hybrid War Against Ukraine

Livemint/WSJ: Russians Have Already Started Hybrid War With Bomb Threats, Cyberattacks, Ukraine Says

Moscow is using cyberattacks, economic pressure and, most recently, false bomb threats, to undermine its neighbor, Kyiv says

KYIV (UKRAINE) : U.S. officials are warning that Russia could be about to attack Ukraine.

For many citizens in this embattled country, the assault has already begun. Ukrainian officials say that Russia, which has positioned more than 100,000 troops around three sides of Ukraine, is stepping up a destabilization campaign involving cyberattacks, economic disruption and a new tactic: hundreds of fake bomb threats.

Russian forces and their proxies already control portions of Ukraine and frequent skirmish with government forces. The aim of Moscow’s intensifying hybrid campaign, Ukrainian officials say, is to weaken their country and sow panic, potentially provoking discontent and protests of the kind Russia fomented in eastern Ukraine in 2014 to justify its interventions there. U.S. and U.K. officials said last month they uncovered coup plots intended to install a puppet pro-Russian government.

Moscow Times: No Breakthrough at Berlin Talks on Ukraine Conflict, Russia Says

Russia and Ukraine failed to reach a breakthrough at marathon talks in Berlin aimed at ending the long-simmering conflict with pro-Moscow separatists in eastern Ukraine, the Kremlin's envoy said early Friday.

“Unfortunately, almost nine hours of negotiations ended without any visible, tangible results expressed in documents,” Kremlin envoy Dmitry Kozak told reporters during a late-night briefing.

His Ukrainian colleague Andriy Yermak said the four sides “were unable to agree on any joint document” but expressed hope that they will continue talks “very soon.”

“Everyone is determined to achieve a result,” Yermak said. Kozak said Thursday’s talks, brokered by Germany and France, failed over differences between Russia’s and Ukraine’s interpretations of a 2015 ceasefire deal known as the Minsk agreements.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Commercial satellite images published by a private U.S. company show new Russian military deployments at several locations near Ukraine, suggesting that Moscow's force buildup continues amid a flurry of diplomacy aimed at easing the crisis.

Russia is holding joint military exercises in ex-Soviet Belarus as well as naval drills in the Black Sea, part of a surge of military activity near Ukraine that has fuelled fears of an impending invasion. Russia denies any plans to attack.

U.S.-based Maxar Technologies, which has been tracking the buildup of Russian forces for weeks, said images taken on Wednesday and Thursday showed significant new deployments in several locations in annexed Crimea, western Russia and Belarus.

They include about 30,000 troops taking part in military exercises in Belarus.

'Information Warfare' Has Already Begun In The Ukraine Crisis

Yahoo News: With Russian troops poised on the border with Ukraine, 'information warfare' has already begun

The dire warnings from America about a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine keep coming.

On Saturday, U.S. intelligence reports stated that Russia was capable of overtaking capital Kyiv within 72 hours and inflicting 50,000 civilian deaths.

On Sunday, U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan said that the 130,000 Russian troops massed on the Ukrainian border could attack “any day.” On Monday, President Biden told those 30,000 Americans living in Ukraine “it would be wise to leave the country.”

The Russian version of the situation, however, is markedly different. Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations, called the U.S. assessments “madness and scaremongering,” dismissing them as “propaganda.”

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia’s foreign ministry, on Monday asserted that the U.S. and U.K. are targeting Russia “to divert public attention from domestic political crises.”
