China, Russia To Promote Strategic Partnership Over Next Decade -- Xinhuanet

MOSCOW, May 6 (Xinhua) -- China and Russia agreed Friday to promote the steady growth of their bilateral strategic partnership over the next decade.

That pledge was made during a meeting between visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Yang said Chinese President Hu Jintao would visit Russia later this year and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation between China and Russia.

My Comment: There are still many differences between the two powers .... and there is still a lot of distrust. In short .... this is an alliance of convenience .... but only for today.

China, Russia Vow To Step Up Military Ties: Report

BEIJING (AFP) – Chinese President Hu Jintao called Thursday for stronger military ties with Russia in talks with visiting Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, state media reported.

"As the strategic partnership between China and Russia develops, the relationship between the two militaries has also continued to become more consolidated and stronger," Xinhua news agency quoted Hu as saying.

With next year's 60th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations approaching and economic relations between them at historic highs, the two nations should also advance ties in other areas, Hu said.

My Comment: They both have a very long border .... so cooperation should not be a great surprise. In addition .... Russia has a lot of oil to sell, and China is looking for oil. Cooperation between the two countries is all but guaranteed just on that issue alone.

RUSSIA has ended a decades-old border dispute with China by giving it a stretch of river island territory in a ceremony symbolising the Cold War rivals' warming ties.
Chinese and Russian flags were raised and new border markers erected as part of the handover at China's far north-eastern tip near the Russian city of Khabarovsk, Interfax news agency reported.

A Russian border guard unit withdrew from what is now Chinese territory, leaving behind an empty headquarters and barracks buildings, Interfax said.

Under an agreement signed by the two countries' foreign ministers in July, Russia agreed to give up Tarabarov Island, known as Yinlong in Chinese, and half of Bolshoi Ussuriysky Island, called Heixiazi in Chinese.

My Comment: Tensions on this border region have been present for decades. This is a big step to diffuse them, and is a symbol of the thawing of relations between the two countries.
