Reuters: Japan says Russian warships spotted near Taiwan, Okinawa islands

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's defence ministry said late on Friday it had spotted two Russian Navy ships in the waters near Taiwan and Japan's Okinawa islands in the previous four days, following a similar announcement this week from Taiwan.

Taiwan's defence ministry said on Tuesday it had spotted two Russian frigates off its eastern coast and send aircraft and ships to keep watch.

Japan's government said last month that repeated Russian military activity near Japanese territory, including joint drills with Chinese forces, posed "serious concern" for Japan's national security.

Newsweek: Russia's Only Aircraft Carrier Catches Fire

A fire broke out on the flagship of the Russian Navy, according to local media reports.

The blaze started on the Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia's only aircraft carrier, while it was docked at the Zvyozdochka shipyard in the Barents Sea port city of Murmansk, located in the far north-west of Russia, news agency Tass said.

An emergency services source told the agency on Thursday morning that 20 people had been evacuated, the fire was extinguished and that "there were no casualties."

Alexei Rakhmanov, head of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), which is overseeing renovation of the vessel, told RIA Novosti that the incident occurred during repair work.

The Admiral Kuznetsov has been out of service and in dry dock for repairs since 2018.

Russian Navy Takes Delivery Of It's 'Doomsday' Submarine

CNN: Russian Navy's massive submarine could set the stage for 'a new Cold War' in the oceans

Seoul, South Korea (CNN)The Russian Navy has taken delivery of what is the world's longest known submarine, one its maker touts as a research vessel -- but what others say is a platform for espionage and possibly nuclear weapons.

The Belgorod was turned over to the Russian Navy earlier this month in the port of Severodvinsk, according to the country's largest shipbuilder, Sevmash Shipyard.

Experts say its design is a modified version of Russia's Oscar II class guided-missile submarines, made longer with the aim to eventually accommodate the world's first nuclear-armed stealth torpedoes and equipment for intelligence gathering.

Russia’s Last Typhoon-Class And World's Largest Nuclear Submarine Could Be Completely Retired

Warzone/The Drive: Claims Swirl Around The Fate Of Russia’s Last Huge Typhoon Class Submarine

The story of Russia’s iconic Typhoon class submarines looks to be getting closer to its conclusion.

Russian state media reports have offered conflicting details today about the status of the last Typhoon class ballistic missile submarine in active service, the Dmitry Donskoy. Though the fate of this submarine, the largest by displacement of any type in existence, is unclear, by all indications it is moving ever-closer to its retirement.

RIA Novosti, citing anonymous sources, was the first to report that Dmitry Donskoy, also known by its hull number TK-208, had been formally decommissioned and was headed for the scrap yard. Anonymous sources from within Russia's state-run shipbuilding industry and the country's security services subsequently told TASS that this news was incorrect and that any final decision about the submarine's future would not come until December at the earliest.

Six Russian amphibious assault ships are sailing into the Black Sea to take part in naval exercises, according to Russia's Ministry of Defense. The move delivers more Russian military power closer to Ukraine as tensions persist.

The Russian ships are moving into the area to "work out the actions of the Navy and Aerospace Forces to protect Russian national interests in the world ocean, as well as to counter military threats to the Russian Federation from sea and ocean directions," Russia's defense ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

Russia previously announced a number of military exercises covering all areas of responsibility for the Russian fleet.

Russian Navy Announces Drills For Black Sea Fleet. Six Russian Landing Ships That Left The Baltic Sea Have Entered The Mediterranean

Warzone/The Drive: Six Russian Landing Ships That Left The Baltic Sea Have Entered The Mediterranean

The arrival of these warships comes ahead of major naval maneuvers and concerns that they could take part in operations against Ukraine.

The latest three examples from the six amphibious warfare ships that left the Baltic Sea earlier this month entered the Mediterranean Sea today, where the Russian Ministry of Defense has said they will take part in naval maneuvers.

However, with tensions surrounding Russia and Ukraine remaining high, there has been concern that the amphibious flotilla’s ultimate destination may be the Black Sea. From there they would be well-positioned to support a potential new Russian intervention in Ukraine. The three vessels from the Russian Navy’s Northern Fleet, the Project 775 Ropucha class amphibious warfare ships Olenegorskiy Gornyak and Georgiy Pobedonosets and the Project 11711 Ivan Gren class landing ship Pyotr Morgunov, were spotted entering the Mediterranean earlier today via the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Russian Navy is kicking off several simultaneous exercises, with ships from the Baltic and Black seas and its Northern Fleet sortieing from their homeports across Europe, the Kremlin has announced.

More than 140 warships and support vessels, along with 60 aircraft and a total of 10,000 personnel, will participate in the drills, according to the Russian MoD.

But the exercises have sparked alarm within Western nations in light of tensions over Ukraine.

NATO countries have been surging out ships and aircraft and are accelerating planned deployments in response to Russia’s massing of troops on its border with Ukraine.

Ireland protested over Russia’s plans to hold live fire exercises 240 kilometers off the Irish coast in February. Irish fisherman have pledged to disrupt the exercise, according to the BBC.

Russia Continues To Build-Up Its Ballistic-Missile Submarine Fleet

Business Insider: Russia is building 2 more ballistic-missile subs, the latest in a long line of 'boomers' that worry its rivals

* In August, Russia officially marked the start of construction on two new Borei-A-class submarines.

* The class is Russia's newest, most advanced class of nuclear-powered ballistic-missile submarine.

* The five Borei-A-class boats now being built show that Russia's SSBN modernization is moving full speed ahead.

In August, Russia officially marked the beginning of construction on two additional Borei-A-class submarines, with President Vladimir Putin attending their keel-laying ceremony via video.

The boats, Knyaz Potemkin and Dmitry Donskoy, bring the total number of Borei-class nuclear-powered ballistic-missile submarines, designated SSBNs, under construction to five.

The ceremony, which also marked the construction of two diesel-electric submarines and two corvettes, was held some four months after Russia's navy said it would begin decommissioning the Ekaterinburg, one of its seven Delta IV-class SSBNs.

No One Can Match Russia’s 200-Knot Shkval Torpedo

Russian submarines are equipped with Shkval torpedoes that are capable of traveling at an inconceivable speed for underwater equipment — up to 375 kph. Credit: Handout.

Asia Times: No match for Russia’s 200-knot Shkval torpedo

Powered by a rocket engine, the supercavitating projectile is capable of astonishing speeds and a maximum range of 7,500 yards

One of the most innovative underwater weapons developed by the Soviet Union was the VA-111 Shkval (“Squall”) supercavitating torpedo, a weapon that is coming back into view as US-Russia tensions ramp up in a new competitive age.

Forget the Red October, first strike Soviet submarine from the movie of the same name — this was a torpedo that could suddenly go six times faster than its predecessors.

Highly classified, Shkval was virtually unknown before the end of the Cold War and only became common knowledge in the mid-1990s, according to a report by Kyle Mizokami at The National Interest.

Powered by a rocket engine, it is capable of astonishing speeds of up to 200 knots an hour and boasts a maximum range of 7,500 yards.

Russia's Newest Attack Nuclear Submarine Has Been Accepted By Its Navy

Warzone/The Drive: Russia Just Accepted Its New Super-Quiet, Cruise Missile-Packed Submarine Into Service

It’s been a long wait, but the new Yasen-M subclass should help revitalize the Russian Navy’s nuclear-powered submarine force.

More than seven years after its last nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine, or SSGN, entered service, the Russian Navy has commissioned its next such vessel, the Kazan, the lead ship of a new subclass.

The event marks an important advance in the overhaul of Russia’s mainly Cold War-era nuclear submarine fleet, which had previously introduced only one SSGN of all-new design, the Severodvinsk, since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The new type is based on the design of the Severodvinsk, the sole Project 885 Yasen vessel.

The Kazan, first of the Project 885M Yasen-M subclass, was officially commissioned into service today at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, on the White Sea in northwest Russia. Construction work on the submarine had started back in 2009 and, after much delay, it had finally been launched in March 2017.
