Human Rights Watch: Sri Lankan Military Forces Continue To Rape And Torture Tamil Detainees

'Torture And Rape Of Tamils Is Widespread', Says Human Rights Watch Report -- The Australian

A HUMAN Rights Watch report citing dozens of cases of alleged torture and rape of Tamils in the custody of Sri Lankan security forces claims the practice remains "widespread and systematic" more than three years after the end of the civil war.


The report, titled "We will teach you a lesson", contains 75 graphic claims of kidnap, torture and rape of Tamil men, women and youths allegedly by military, police and paramilitary forces from 2006 to last year in both official and secret detention centres.

The allegations are based on interviews conducted with former detainees in Australia, Britain, Germany, India, Malaysia and Indonesia.

At least one case involves that of an individual who voluntarily returned from Australia only to be picked up on suspicion of links with the now-vanquished Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

While the Sri Lankan government lifted its wartime state of emergency in August 2011, authorities can still detain suspects without charge for up to 30 days.

UN Investigator Accuses Sri Lanka of Crimes Against Tamils -- Voice of America

A U.N. special investigator is accusing the Sri Lankan government of serious crimes against Tamil civilians in the last phase of the country's civil war that ended in 2009. The investigator has presented his report to the U.N. Human Rights Council.

Special Investigator on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions Christof Heyns said a video broadcast last year of the final stages of the civil war in Sri Lanka presents credible evidence of crimes committed by the government against the Tamil people.

Video Of Sri Lankan Soldiers Executing Naked Tamils 'authentic': UN -- The Telegraph

Video footage appearing to show Sri Lankan soldiers executing blindfolded and naked Tamils is probably genuine, a UN human rights investigator said on Thursday.

Philip Alston called for an investigation into war crimes and other grave violations of human rights allegedly committed in Sri Lanka.

The government's 25-year war against Tamil Tiger rebels ended in May, with UN reports saying more than 7,000 civilians were killed in the final spasm of fighting as government forces closed in.
