Reuters: Tanzania's President John Magufuli dead at 61 

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Tanzania’s President John Magufuli, one of Africa’s most prominent coronavirus sceptics, has died aged 61, Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan said on Wednesday after a more than two-week absence from public life that led to speculation about his health.

She said he died from the heart disease that had plagued him for a decade. She said burial arrangements were under way and announced 14 days of mourning and the flying of flags at half staff. State television broadcast mournful and religious songs. 

Magufuli, had not been seen in public since Feb. 27, sparking rumours that he had contracted COVID-19. Officials denied on March 12 that he had fallen ill and on Monday the vice president urged Tanzanians not to listen to rumours from outside the country and said it was normal for a human being to be checked for the flu or fever..

VOA: Tanzanian President Expresses Doubt on Coronavirus Vaccines 

Tanzanian President John Magufuli has warned his health ministry against rushing to adopt COVID-19 vaccines, suggesting the vaccines may not be safe or effective.

In a speech Wednesday in Western Tanzania, Magufuli expressed doubt about vaccines produced by Western countries. 

“If the white man was able to come up with vaccinations, then vaccinations for AIDS would have been brought, tuberculosis would be a thing of the past, vaccines for malaria and cancer would have been found,” said the president. 

Magufuli directed the Ministry of Health to adopt a vaccine only after it is certified by Tanzanian experts. 

He said Tanzanians must not be used as guinea pigs in vaccine trials.

Mozambique And Tanzania To Launch Joint Operations To Combat An Islamist Insurgency In Mozambique's Cabo Delgado Province

Reuters: Mozambique, Tanzania to launch joint operations against insurgents 

MAPUTO, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Mozambique and Tanzania are to launch joint operations to combat an Islamist insurgency under an agreement that will also see some 500 suspected insurgents extradited, Mozambique’s state-owned newspaper Noticias said on Monday. 

The three-year-old insurgency is concentrated in Mozambique’s northernmost province of Cabo Delgado, separated from Tanzania by the Rovuma River and home to gas developments worth $60 billion.

In October, however, it spilled across the border when some 300 insurgents attacked a Tanzanian village. 

Many of the insurgency’s recruits are also thought to come from Tanzania.

Tanzania Raises Stakes In Border Spat With Malawi -- Voice of America

NAIROBI — Tanzania said on Thursday its armed forces were ready to protect the country against any foreign threat to its territory, raising the stakes in an escalating border dispute with Malawi.

Tanzania is embroiled in a territorial wrangle with Malawi over the ownership of Lake Nyasa, which is known as Lake Malawi in the neighboring country.

Malawi, which sits to the west of Africa's third-largest lake, claims the entire northern half of the lake while Tanzania, to the east, says it owns half of the northern area. The southern half is shared between Malawi and Mozambique.

My Comment: The Chinese are dominating investment and influence in this part of Africa .... and I predict that this trend will only continue. More to the point .... the Chinese would never be accused of doing this. On a political/human rights side note .... all is not calm in Tanzania.

The Tanzanian government has closed the Nduta camp for Burundian refugees in northwestern Tanzania. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees says the camp was closed earlier this week after it relocated the remaining 10,000 refugees from Nduta to Mtabila camp.

The Nduta camp closer was a significant moment for Burundi refugees. Now only the Mtabila camp in Tanzania will host the thousands of Burundians who fled their homeland during the violence of the 1990s.
