Man Dressed As A Samurai Attacks And Kills 2, Wounds 5 In Quebec City

Daily Mail: At least two are killed and five seriously injured after a man dressed as a 'samurai' armed with a sword goes on the rampage in French-speaking Quebec City on Halloween before being arrested

* Attack occurred before midnight on Saturday near Quebec City parliament
 * At least two were killed and five others were hospitalized with injuries
 * Police describe the attacker as wearing 'medieval garb' and armed with sword
 * Suspect, a male in his 20s, was arrested an hour later and a mile away
 * Police have not yet ruled out terrorism, but remain tight-lipped about motive
 * It comes after a string of Islamist extremist terror attacks in France

Two people have been killed and five more seriously injured after a man dressed in 'samurai garb' and armed with a sword went on a stabbing spree in Quebec City.

The attack occurred late on Saturday night near the provincial parliament building in the capital of the French-speaking Canadian province, and a suspect was taken into custody after a citywide manhunt.

At least two people died in the attack, police confirmed. Five others were rushed to nearby hospitals in serious condition.

Police described the attacker as wearing 'medieval clothes' and Radio-Canada reported that he was dressed as a samurai.

The attack occurred on Halloween, when such costumes would not necessarily raise alarm.

Does Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau Support A Law Where ISIS Fighters Will Only Spend A Maximum Of Six Months In Jail?

AFP

Brian Lilley: Trudeau wants terrorism offences reduced to maximum six months of jail time

Today is October 22, the four year anniversary of the terrorist attack on Parliament Hill.

On the morning of October 22, 2014, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau shot and killed Cpl Nathan Cirillo at the National War Memorial before storming Centre Block.

As he ran down the central corridor firing bullets from his rifle, then Prime Minister Stephen Harper was meeting with his caucus on one side while Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair was meeting his NDP caucus on the other side.

Any one of the MPs stepping out of the caucus room at the wrong time could have been killed by one of those bullets. I was on the Hill minutes after the bullets flew and I was at the National War Memorial shortly after that.

Multiple Injuries In Suspected ISIS Inspired Terrror Attack Outside A Footbal Stadium In Edmonton, Canada

CBC: Edmonton police investigate 'acts of terrorism' after officer stabbed, pedestrians run down

5 people were injured and 1 person is in custody

A man who stabbed a police officer with a knife and deliberately plowed into pedestrians on Edmonton's busiest downtown strip is being investigated for "acts of terrorism," police said at a news conference early Sunday.

A 30-year-old man is in custody following a high-speed chase just before midnight through streets filled with bar patrons and football fans. The chase ended only after a white U-Haul van the man was driving struck four pedestrians and flipped on its side.

WNU Editor: It is surreal to be watching how the news is covering this story in Canada (I live in Montreal). I am watching both CTV News and the CBC, and you can just see the anchormen not wanting to go where most viewers are probably thinking .... that the suspect is either a Canadian who is Muslim and who was radicalized to kill Canadians .... or (and this is the big fear) an immigrant. But after this story is covered, they go straight to yesterdays protests against Canada's open door immigration policy, and where the same anchormen have no problems calling these protesters extreme far-right pro-white nationalist protestors.  .... Far-right, anti-fascist protesters temporarily shut Quebec border crossing (CBC). And here is the rub .... on Quebec's French news stations the coverage is completely opposite from what the major English news channels are broadcasting. They have no problem calling the suspect in Edmonton's attack a Muslim terrorist, and as to yesterday's protests against Canada's immigration policy, they are calling the protestors "concerned Quebecers" who see Canada's current policies a direct threat to French Quebec's culture and language.

Update: Correction. French Radio Canada just called these French Quebec nationalist protestors extreme far-right.

Terror Attack In Quebec City -- News Roundup

CBC News: Quebec City mosque attack suspect Alexandre Bissonnette charged with 6 counts of 1st-degree murder

Facebook group described Bissonnette as having 'pro-Le Pen and anti-feminist positions'

Alexandre Bissonnette, the man police believe opened fire on a Quebec City mosque, has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder while using a restricted firearm.

Bissonnette appeared in Quebec City court on Monday around 6 p.m. ET. His next court appearance is set for Feb. 21.

According to his Facebook page, which has since been taken down, Bissonnette is from the Quebec City suburb of Cap-Rouge.

His profile also shows he studied anthropology and political science at Laval University and was a cadet as a child.

WNU Editor: A lot of details have still not been made public on the person who is responsible for these horrific crimes .... but what we do know is what I outlined yesterday .... a French Quebecer who harbours a deep hatred towards visible minorities who are not French Quebecers. And what is particularly sad about this story is that the men who were killed in this terror attack represent the best of the immigrant community in Canada. All of these victims are/were success stories who had loving families .... who came to Canada for a better life and who fulfilled their goals of becoming citizens that Canada is proud to have .... and now everyone is grieving. This blog covers wars and conflicts around the world .... it is a different story when I cover what is happening in my backyard. My prayers are for the families who lost their loved ones .... and for those whose loved ones are still in hospital. On a side note, I promised last night to give an explanation on why this terror attack happened in Quebec .... and how Quebec nationalism may have played a role. But not tonight .... my anger on what happened is still there and any commentary from my part will be clouded by my hatred on what this killer did. And while I do know that some in the Canadian media are trying to tie President Trump and France's Le Pen to these killings because of some Facebook postings that the killer did .... I also do know that the killer was an admirer of the Pope ..... which these same pundits are conveniently choosing to ignore because it does not fit their narrative. But like I said .... if I am up to it I will provide a more comprehensive commentary in the next day or two.

Attack At Quebec City Mosque Leaves 5 Dead

AFP: At least five dead in shooting at Quebec City mosque: media

Quebec City (AFP) - At least five people were killed and several people wounded after gunmen opened fire at a mosque in Quebec City, media reported.

A Quebec police spokesman confirmed that there were people killed, but did not say how many.

Two suspects in the shooting were arrested, he said.

Police did not rule out the possibility of a third suspect who had fled the scene.

The motive of the attack was not immediately clear. Police set up a perimeter around the mosque.

A few dozen people were inside the Islamic Cultural Center when the shooting began just after 8:00 pm (0100 GMT Monday), CBC reported, citing its French-language service Radio-Canada.

According to CBC, Quebec City Police Constable Etienne Doyon said at the time of the attack mostly men were gathered at the mosque for evening prayers.

WNU Editor: After spending a day and evening skiing with the GF and friends .... I sit down in front of my computer and the first thing I see is this terrible story. For those who may not know .... I live in Quebec. And talk about timing .... only yesterday I was writing about my own personal experience on how immigration has changed the community that I live in (the link is here) .... and how Canadian government policy towards open immigration  has created a growing resentment against the immigrant ghettos that are now forming on the island of Montreal. And while I do not know the details of tonight's terror attack .... I can say with confidence that the group responsible are French-Quebec nationalists who decided to target an ethnic community that is not like them (i.e. white French Quebecers). For those who may not know .... here is a little education about Quebec. To begin .... it is not like the rest of Canada. It is a French province that has traditionally been very hostile towards other ethnic groups .... it was first directed at the English (who over the years have simply left the province), and while the Quebec/Canadian media prefers not to talk about it .... it is now being directed at the immigrant communities. This xenophobic mindset is deeply rooted .... and while many Quebecers will deny it .... it is there. I have experienced it first hand more than once (in both my personal and professional life) .... and while I do have a thick skin .... it has left a bitter taste in my mouth. I will update this story tomorrow when more details become available, and I will give my own explanation/analysis on how Canada's immigration policy of letting in refugees is creating a resentment within the French population of Quebec who see these immigrants as a threat to their cultural identity.

How The Ottawa Shooter Was Stopped By The Sergeant-at-Arms

Ottawa Shooting: The Face-To-Face Encounter That Ended The Attack On Parliament -- CBC

Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers rushed toward the gunman - and then took decisive action. It is the critical moment of the attack on Parliament Hill: Before any more lives could be taken by gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, he is shot dead by House of Commons Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers.

CBC News has learned the dramatic details of that face-to-face encounter, when the 58-year-old Vickers confronted Zehaf-Bibeau and killed him at point-blank range.

Zehaf-Bibeau had exchanged gunshots with parliamentary security at the entrance of Centre Block and ran down the long Hall of Honour towards the doors to the Parliamentary Library.

Remembering Corporal Nathan Cirillo, The Soldier Gunned Down As He Stood Guard At Canada's National War Memorial On Parliament Hill

Seconds before: A tourist snapped this photo, likely the last ever taken of Corporal Nathan Cirillo (left) before he was gunned down by Michael Zehaf-Bibeau in an attack on Ottawa's Parliament Hill on Wednesday

Standing Guard And Seconds From Death: The Last Picture Of Canadian Reservist Father, 24, Who 'Would Give Anything To Anyone' -- Daily Mail

* A tourist snapped what is likely the last photo of Nathan Cirillo, 24, taken before the horrific act of terror outside the Parliament on Wednesday
* Corporal Cirillo, father to a six-year-old son, was gunned down as he stood guard at Canada's National War Memorial on Parliament Hill
* The Hamilton, Ontario native was rushed to the hospital but later died
* Cirillo, a fitness fanatic and animal lover, served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and worked as a personal trainer and bouncer
* His mother, who is traveling to Ottawa, is 'completely broken', relatives said
* Cirillo's killer, Muslim convert Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, 32, was shot dead after opening fire while wearing a scarf at Parliament Hill on Wednesday
* Bibeau is the son of Susan Bibeau a high-ranking official on the Immigration and Refuge Board of Canada

The reservist soldier shot dead Wednesday as he stood guard at Canada's War Memorial in Ottawa was photographed by a Parliament Hill visitor mere moments before the horrific act of terror.

Corporal Nathan Cirillo is pictured in what is in all likelihood the final photo taken of the 24-year-old father before he was shot at close range and fatally wounded.

Seconds later, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau shot Cirillo, whose ceremonial weapon was not loaded. The soldier was rushed to a hospital, but soon succumbed to the wounds.

Twitter user Kamakazi19982 posted the photo with the caption: 'Ok so we were on a tour at the war monument in Ottawa a few minutes ago, a few seconds later there was a shooting.'

He calls that experience one of the best in his life .... and he especially loved the recognition and attention that he always received from the tourists. He told me last night that Corporal Nathan Cirillo must have been a very special reservist to be given the duty of being a guard at Canada's War Memorial. It is .... in every way .... sacred ground .... and only the best of the best are given the duty.

Our prayers are with Corporal Nathan Cirillo's family and loved ones.

House of Commons Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers was lauded by members of Parliament Wednesday for his reported role in stopping an assailant who killed a Canadian Forces member in Ottawa.

Vickers, 58, a native of Miramichi, N.B., was reportedly in the House of Commons when a gunman entered sometime after 9:52 a.m.

Two sources told The Canadian Press that Vickers shot the assailant inside the Hall of Honour, the main entrance to the Centre Block beneath the Peace Tower.

Officials have not confirmed that Vickers fired at the suspect, but multiple MPs credited Vickers on Twitter with helping to stop the attacker.

Ottawa Shooting: How An Oasis Of Tranquility Became Breeding Ground For Terrorists -- The Telegraph

As second soldier shot in two days, why is Canada being targeted by Islamic extremists?

For the second time in three days Canada has been appalled and shocked by an attack on a soldier by a suspected Islamic terrorist.

Once a byword for international peace and prosperity, the “other” Northern American nation is now suffering from attacks hitherto confined to Western nations known as being more active on the international stage.

While the facts of the latest shooting are still being established, here is what we know about Canada’s links to terrorism.

Canada is under attack:

With the shooting dead of a soldier at the Ottawa War Memorial, and the Parliament put under lockdown, Canadians can not escape the fact that they have become targets. The soldier was the second to be murdered in three days, meaning the Canadian authorities must now fear this is the start of a coordinated campaign of terror and will be braced for further assaults over the coming days and weeks.

My Comment: Regular readers of this blog know that I am a Canadian living in Montreal. I became a citizen because I love the peace and tranquility of the country, it`s laws, economic opportunities, tolerance, it`s freedoms .... and .... being a nature lover .... a perfect place to love the outdoors.

But today`s attack is not a surprise to me. When I moved into my first apartment in Montreal (1990s), I learned only after his arrest that the Millennium Bomber lived a short distance from my home .... and that is when I became fully aware that some of Canada`s immigrants may have a different agenda from someone like myself who wanted a different and better life.

But today`s attack on Parliament Hill hits me personally. I have friends who work there, and I have been there on more than one occasion. I have a great deal of respect for this incredible Canadian institution .... it is the symbol of a free and tolerant Canada. That is why it was attacked today .... and that is why many Canadians are in shock today.

Fortunately .... all of my friends who work there are OK .... but they are telling me that everything is now on lock-down and the situation is still tense (as of 13:55 EST). I am naturally talking to everyone right now .... so blogging will be light for the next few hours. But rest assure .... as more news becomes available .... I will be posting it.

Update: I will be posting a full recap at 18:00 EST

Multiple Shooters Reported In Canada`s Capital City. Parliament And Two Other Locations Attacked: News Roundup And Live Updates

* Witness accounts of a suspect include descriptions of him as short with long hair, overweight, wearing a dark jacket and 'Arabic scarf'
* Residents of the city have been warned to stay inside and away from windows as authorities swarm downtown in the search of the gunmen

A gunman has shot a Canadian soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial before multiple gunmen fired dozens of shots inside the halls of Parliament in Ottawa.

One of the two soldiers struck by a Quebec motorist with suspected jihadi sympathies has died.

'Al-Qaeda-Inspired' Canada Day Bomb Plot Uncovered

2 Charged In 'al-Qaeda-inspired' Canada Day Bomb Plot -- CBC

'We will not let suspicion darken our hears,' says B.C. Premier Christy Clark.

Two B.C. residents have been charged in an al-Qaeda-inspired Canada Day terror plot that involved pressure cooker bombs similar to the ones used in the Boston Marathon bombings.

Amanda Marie Korody, 30, and John Stewart Nuttall, 39, both of Surrey, B.C., have each been charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, knowingly facilitating a terrorist activity and possession of an explosive substance.

They were arrested Monday and are accused of building explosive devices with the "purpose of causing death or serious bodily injuries," which were placed outside the B.C. legislature in Victoria on Canada Day.

My Comment: The city of Victoria (British Colombia) is one of the most beautiful cities in Canada ... if not the world. Regular readers of this blog know that I live in Canada (Montreal), so this type of news is deeply disturbing .... especially upon learning taht they had wanted to do it on our national holiday (July 1). Fortunately .... this plan was thwarted by Canada's intelligence agency and the RCMP.

Canada: Al-Qaeda Still Enemy Number One

Al-Qaeda Still Enemy Number One, Canadian Report On Terrorism Says -- National Post

TORONTO — Almost 12 years after the 9/11 attacks, al-Qaeda and its affiliates remain Canada’s leading terrorist threat, according to the first annual public report on terrorism.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews was scheduled to release the “2013 Public Report on the Terrorist Threat to Canada” today at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto.

The report says “global violent extremists,” particularly al-Qaeda and its network of affiliated groups, which operate in regions such as Africa and Syria, are the top concern.

“Evolving conflicts abroad continue to shape the nature of the terrorist threat to Canada, and we will continue to monitor these threats and explain their impacts to Canadians,” Mr. Toews was quoted as saying in a statement.

A third suspect arrested in connection with an alleged plot to derail a passenger train traveling between Toronto and New York discussed contaminating the air or water with bacteria in an effort to kill up to 100,000 people, documents show.

According to a U.S. Department of Justice document, Ahmed Abassi, who was arrested on April 22, suggested using the bacterial agent in his discussions with another terror suspect and an undercover FBI agent.

Canada Thwarts "al Qaeda-Backed" Train Plot With An Inranian Connection (Updated)

Canada Thwarts "al Qaeda-Backed" Train Plot, Iran Denies Role -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Canadian police have arrested two men and charged them with plotting to derail a Toronto-area passenger train in an operation that they say was backed by al Qaeda elements in Iran.

"Had this plot been carried out, it would have resulted in innocent people being killed or seriously injured," Royal Canadian Mounted Police official James Malizia told reporters on Monday.

U.S. officials said the attack would have targeted a rail line between New York and Toronto, a route that travels along the Hudson Valley and enters Canada near Niagara Falls.

The RCMP said it had arrested Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, of Montreal, and Raed Jaser, 35, of Toronto in connection with the plot. Authorities said it was not linked to last week's Boston Marathon bombings, which killed three people and injured more than 200.
