Fifteen people, including 11 attackers, were killed and 14 hurt as a group in vehicles hurled explosives at a food court yesterday in the latest flare-up in China’s Xinjiang province, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

The group randomly hacked people after the blasts in Shache County, Xinhua reported today. Police on patrol nearby evacuated the crowds and killed 11 of the attackers, the news agency said.

President Xi Jinping has blamed Uighur separatists, the Muslim ethnic minority that makes up about 45 percent of Xinjiang’s population, for a series of bombings and attacks in the province and across the country. More than 300 terror suspects have been arrested in the past six months as part of a nationwide crackdown.

China Launches Terrorism Crackdown After Xinjiang Region Attack -- CNN

Hong Kong (CNN) -- China has launched a terrorism crackdown one day after a series of explosions in an open-air market killed dozens in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang, the country's state news agency, Xinhua said Friday.

Without any details, the report said authorities had undertaken a "one-year crackdown on violent terrorist activities" in the volatile region after blasts in the heavily policed city of Urumqi killed at least 39 people and wounded more than 90, according to state media. The number of dead does not include the attackers.

The state news agency reported Friday that five attackers were responsible for the blasts; four were killed in the explosions, and a fifth was arrested Thursday. They were identified through DNA testing, Xinhua said.

May 22 (Reuters) - Explosives hurled from two vehicles which ploughed into an open market in China's troubled Xinjiang region killed 31 people on Thursday, state media reported, the deadliest act of violence in the region in years.

China called the attack in the regional capital of Urumqi a "serious violent terrorist incident" and domestic security chief Meng Jianzhu vowed to strengthen a crackdown on the "arrogance of terrorists". Ninety-four people were wounded.

China has blamed a series of knife and bomb attacks in recent months on separatist militants from Xinjiang, the traditional home of the ethnic Muslim Uighurs.

At least 33 people are dead and 130 injured after a group of knife-wielding men hacked their way through innocent people at one of China's busiest railway stations.

Distressing photos circulating online showed bodies, pools of blood and abandoned luggage scattered across the terminal floor at Kunming Railway Station in Yunnan province.

Authorities described the incident at about 9.20pm local time (1.20pm GMT) as an 'organised, premeditated, violent terrorist attack' in which at least 10 people stabbed commuters outside the station terminal before moving inside.

The death toll stands at 29 bystanders and four attackers who were shot dead by police.

My Comment: For the past two weeks all of my friends and contacts in China have been asking me on what is my take on the ongoing turmoil in Ukraine. Yesterday .... the roles were reversed. The Chinese are in shock with what has happened .... with some of them calling this their own 9/11. But what is striking everyone there is the randomness of the attack. Everyone in China uses the trains .... and everyone is being left with the feeling that it could have been them.

China police said five people have been arrested in connection with this week's suicide car crash in China's capital, calling it a terrorist attack and identifying the attackers as members of a Muslim minority.

Police said the five suspects were detained the same day as the Monday noon attack at the Forbidden City gate across from Tiananmen Square, in the culturally and politically sensitive section of Beijing where China's Communist Party leaders live and work.

"Police have identified Monday's incident at Tiananmen Square as a violent terrorist attack which was carefully planned, organized and premeditated," police said, according to Reuters.

BEIJING — Authorities were investigating Tuesday whether ethnic minorities from China’s troubled Xinjiang region were involved in a fiery vehicle collision at Tiananmen Square the day before that killed at least five people.

In a notice sent to hotels in Beijing, police ordered hotel staff to search for “suspicious” guests and vehicles related to Monday’s incident and specifically named two residents from counties in western China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, according to state media and reports quoting hotel staff.

The two men appeared to have Uighur names, which are markedly distinct from Han Chinese names.

Explosion In Beijing International Airport

Explosion Hits Beijing International Airport -- Xinhuanet

BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- An explosion occurred Saturday evening in Terminal 3 of the Beijing International Airport, police said.

A wheel-chaired Chinese man set off a home-made explosive device outside the arrivals exit of the Terminal 3 at around 6:24 p.m.. The man was injured and is currently under treatment.

The explosion caused no other injuries.

Police authorities are investigating the case.

Donkeys pulled melon-laden carts through the streets and women sold bowls of yogurt Monday in the market of this mostly Muslim city in a remote corner of China, the day after militant bombings left a dozen people dead.

But underneath the apparent return to normal life hides a seething anger among the region's ethnic Uighurs toward Chinese immigrants, whom many here see as symbols of the government's oppression, residents and experts say.

With two audacious attacks in a week and the appearance online of videos threatening the Beijing Olympics, Uighur extremists in Xinjiang may be trying to use the games as a way to force themselves out of obscurity into the world's view.

My Comment: As China develops and becomes a more open country, ethnic divisions that have been controlled for a very long time will start to bubble over. We have seen nothing yet. There are over 50 different ethnic groups in China, and they are the fastest growing segment of the population.
