At least 36 people were killed and more than 100 injured in bomb attacks on two Coptic churches on Palm Sunday, in the latest assault on a religious minority increasingly targeted by Islamist militants.

Reuters: Cairo church bombing kills 25, raises fears among Christians

A bombing at Cairo's largest Coptic cathedral killed at least 25 people and wounded 49, many of them women and children attending Sunday mass, in the deadliest attack on Egypt's Christian minority in years.

The attack comes as President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi fights battles on several fronts. His economic reforms have angered the poor, a bloody crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood has seen thousands jailed, whilst an insurgency rages in Northern Sinai, led by the Egyptian branch of Islamic State.

The militant group has also carried out deadly attacks in Cairo and has urged its supporters to launch attacks around the world in recent weeks as it goes on the defensive in its Iraqi and Syrian strongholds.

Roadside Bomb On A Cairo Road Leading To The Pyramids Kills 6 Policemen

New York Times: Bomb at Checkpoint in Cairo Area Kills 6 Police Officers

CAIRO — A bomb ripped through a security checkpoint on the outskirts of Cairo on Friday, killing six police officers and wounding three others, officials said, in the latest in a series of deadly attacks this year.

The bomb detonated next to a large mosque in Cairo’s twin city, Giza, less than two hours before hundreds flocked to the area for Friday Prayer.

The militant group Hasm, or Decisiveness, which has claimed responsibility for previous attacks at Egyptian security checkpoints, said it had carried out the bombing. The claim could not be verified.

Militants have frequently targeted Egyptian security forces since the military ousted the Islamist president, Mohamed Morsi, in 2013 and subsequently killed hundreds of his backers.

Egypt's War Against Islamic Militants In The Sinai Is Intensifying

Wall Street Journal: Egypt Says Its Forces Killed Scores of Militants in Sinai Battle

Warplanes, helicopters carried out deadly airstrikes against Islamic State’s affiliate, military says

CAIRO—Egypt’s military said Friday its warplanes and helicopters killed 70 militants in two days of airstrikes against Islamic State’s affiliate in the northern Sinai Peninsula.

Rebels belonging to the radical group’s local branch, Sinai Province, swarmed more than a dozen army positions around the town of Sheikh Zuwayed on Wednesday in the largest assault on Egypt’s military in recent years.

Thirty-five Islamist fighters were killed during air raids on the first day of fighting, some of them by the militants’ own improvised explosive devices as they fled the bombing, state media quoted unnamed army sources as saying.

Another 35 militants were killed by air raids on Thursday, as government forces continued fighting to regain control of Sheikh Zuwayed, the state media reported.

Cairo Rocked By A Wave Of Bombings

Cairo Rocked By Deadly Bomb Attacks -- Al Jazeera

Four blasts in Egyptian capital kill six and injure more than 70 in attacks apparently aimed at police.

The first and deadliest explosion tore through the security directorate in downtown Cairo, killing four people and injuring more than 70, according to the Health Ministry. Officers at the scene said it was a suicide car bombing.

The blast left a deep crater in the street, and was large enough to shatter windows in shops hundreds of metres away. It also caused extensive damage to the Islamic antiquities museum across the street.

Witnesses said they heard gunshots before the explosion. "It was around 7am this morning. I heard shots and then the ground shook, the windows shattered," said Mohamed Taher, sweeping broken glass outside his cafe near the bomb site.
