Here's How US Marines Evacuate An Embassy In A Hostile Country -- David Brooks, Business Insider

The U.S. Embassy in Tripoli, Libya, was evacuated on Saturday in response to intense insurgent fighting, according to the State Department.

A Marine quick reaction force led the evacuation with assistance from two USMC MV-22 Ospreys, three Air Force F-16 fighter jets, and an undisclosed number of surveillance drones, according to the Military Times.

In situations like these, the Marine Corps is trusted to quickly respond to hostile situations, and countless hours of training have made it more than capable. In response to crises, Marines are expected to be able to execute these types of missions within six hours.

Seventy-eight evacuees were transported to the nearby country of Tunisia by a group of 80 Marines, according to the Military Times. All in all, the evacuation took five hours.

(CNN) -- The U.S. Embassy in Libya evacuated its personnel on Saturday because of heavy militia violence in the capital, Tripoli, U.S. officials said.

About 150 personnel, including 80 U.S. Marines were evacuated from the embassy in the early hours of Saturday morning and were driven across the border into Tunisia, U.S. officials confirm to CNN.

CNN has learned the plan to evacuate the Americans was in the works for several days, but the decision to carry out the plan was made just in the last few days as the security situation around the embassy deteriorated.

Militia fighting in the area of the embassy and airport has degraded security in Tripoli significantly.

The US is sending 1,000 Marines in an amphibious assault ship to Libya's coast as a “precautionary” move should the US embassy require evacuation, a US official said. Security concerns also led the US to suggest Americans in Libya "depart immediately."

Adding to tensions, gunmen attacked the Tripoli home of Libya’s new prime minister, Ahmed Maiteeq, on Tuesday. Businessman Maiteeq, 42, and his family escaped harm, according to AFP.

An aide to Maiteeq said "there was an attack with rockets and small arms on the prime minister's house" in Tripoli at 3:00 a.m. (0100 GMT). Maiteeq’s guards opened fire on the attackers, wounding and arresting two of them, the official added.

The U.S. shifted a Marine contingent to Italy to prepare for the possible evacuation of American personnel from Tripoli, citing lessons learned from the 2012 attack in Benghazi as political turmoil intensified in Libya.

The Defense Department shifted the unit from Spain to Naval Air Station Sigonella in Sicily, bringing the number of Marines there to about 250, Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said yesterday. The U.S. has seven V-2 Osprey planes and three C-130s transport aircraft at the base, Kirby said.

Libyan Government Holds 4 U.S. Military Personnel -- New York Times

WASHINGTON — Four American military personnel assigned to the United States Embassy in Tripoli, Libya, were detained Friday and were being held by the country’s Interior Ministry, American officials said.

According to initial reports received by officials in Washington, the four were believed to have been reviewing potential evacuation routes for diplomats when they were detained. The circumstances of how they were taken and why were not clear.

“We are seeking to further ascertain the facts and ensure their release,” said Jen Psaki, the State Department spokeswoman. “We are in touch with Libyan officials on this issue.”

Photographs of two American passports and embassy identity cards were later disseminated on Twitter. The State Department had no immediate comment.

How did the kidnappers know that the prime minister had approved the raid? After all, his government denied any prior knowledge of the U.S. action. Simple: The Obama administration told them. A front-page story in the New York Times, “U.S. Officials Say Libya Approved Commando Raids,” reported that “After months of lobbying by American officials, the Libyans consented ‘some time ago’ — weeks or perhaps even months — to the United States operations.” The article, which cites “more than half a dozen American diplomatic, military, law enforcement, intelligence and other administration officials” as sources, notes that “The Libyans’ consent marks a significant step forward for the Obama administration, which has been criticized by Congressional Republicans for moving too slowly to apprehend the Benghazi suspects.”

My Comment: The Libyan government certainly did not want it known publicly that they had given permission to the U.S. to conduct this Special Forces mission .... but the White House could not help themselves. This leak also resulted in the second target .... the man that everyone assumes is responsible for the Benghazi U.S. consulate attack .... to quickly go into hiding. Marc A. Thiessen's last paragraph in his opinion piece sums all of this up perfectly ....

General National Congress demands US hand back Abu Anas al-Liby its forces seized from Tripoli in a weekend raid.

Libya's top political authority, the General National Congress, has demanded that the United States hand back an alleged al-Qaeda operative its forces seized from the capital, Tripoli, in a weekend raid.

A Congress statement on Tuesday read out by spokesman Omar Hmidan stressed "the need for the immediate surrender" of Abu Anas al-Liby and described the US operation as a "flagrant violation of (Libya's) national sovereignty".

The text, which was passed by the Congress, also calls for the "need to allow the Libyan authorities and members of his family to get in touch with him and guarantee him access to a lawyer".

EXCLUSIVE: The recent theft of massive amounts of highly sensitive U.S. military equipment from Libya is far worse than previously thought, Fox News has learned, with raiders swiping hundreds of weapons that are now in the hands of militia groups aligned with terror organizations and the Muslim Brotherhood.

The equipment, as Fox News previously reported, was used for training in Libya by U.S. Special Forces. The training team, which was funded by the Pentagon, has since been pulled, partly in response to the overnight raids last August.

According to State Department and military sources, dozens of highly armored vehicles called GMV's, provided by the United States, are now missing. The vehicles feature GPS navigation as well as various sets of weapon mounts and can be outfitted with smoke-grenade launchers. U.S. Special Forces undergo significant training to operate these vehicles. Fox News is told the vehicles provided to the Libyans are now gone.

Highly sensitive U.S. military equipment stored in Libya was stolen over the summer by groups likely aligned and working with terrorist organizations, State Department sources told Fox News -- in raids that contributed to the decision to pull Special Forces personnel from the country.

The stolen equipment had been used by U.S. Special Forces stationed in the country. Lost in the raids in late July and early August were dozens of M4 rifles, night-vision technology and lasers used as aiming devices that are mounted on guns and can only be seen with night-vision equipment.

"This stuff is how we win wars. The enemy doesn't have that," one source said.

The overnight raids happened at a military training camp run by American Special Forces on the outskirts of Tripoli, in the weeks before the team was pulled from the country in August.

The Pentagon's spokesman called the move a precautionary measure but would not say it was directly tied to Tripoli, which foreign diplomats and oil companies recently have begun evacuating. On Monday a car bomb reportedly exploded outside a hospital in Benghazi, killing 10 people.

The shift to Naval Station Signoella marks the first assignment for the response force -- a group of 550 Marines and six MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, which only arrived at Moron Air Base two weeks ago. My Comment: Days after the attack everyone .... including this blogger .... had figured out that the Benghazi attack and the murder of a US Ambassador on September 11 was a planned attack. After-all .... who brings RPGs and heavy machine guns to a demonstration. But U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice .... for some inexplicable reason .... thought otherwise. She is now blaming the intelligence community (who cannot defend themselves) for this fiasco .... washing her hands of any involvement. Sighhh .... so much for accountability of top officials.

Benghazi - A team of US investigators visited Libya's second city Benghazi on Thursday to examine the site where Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in an attack last month.

BENGHAZI, Libya — More than three weeks after attacks in this city killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans, sensitive documents remained only loosely secured in the remains of the U.S. mission here on Wednesday, offering visitors easy access to delicate details about American operations in Libya.

Documents detailing weapons collection efforts, emergency evacuation protocols, the full internal itinerary of Ambassador J. My Comment: What strikes me about this Washington Post report is that one of the documents found was dated two days before the attack, and it outlines concerns on the possibility of a terror attack on the consulate. The US administration is now facing a crisis in Libya. Two US destroyers were steaming towards Libya on Thursday as marines began their hunt for the killers of the American ambassador and three other diplomats, and investigators probed whether the attack may have been a planned strike.

President Barack Obama pledged that “justice will be done” after Chris Stevens, 52, was killed in the attack on the US consulate in the eastern coastal city of Benghazi on Tuesday night. A second diplomat, Sean Smith, and two other US officials were killed in the raid, which came on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

As well as warships, Mr Obama sent 50 marines to secure the embassy in Tripoli and help in evacuating diplomats and other Americans from the country. But pressure was also rising for firm action against groups thought to be involved in the assault on the consulate.
