Fierce clashes between rival Libyan rebel groups in the coastal city of Benghazi have killed several people.

The BBC's Rana Jawad says the fighting is understood to be between Islamist militias and a paramilitary force led by a retired senior officer.

Libya's second largest city is the scene of frequent clashes between the army and Islamist militias.

Authorities in the capital Tripoli have struggled to deal with rebels since Muammar Gaddafi was ousted in 2011.

Eyewitnesses told the BBC that an Islamist militia base in Benghazi was bombed by warplanes.

The death toll is unclear but medical sources in the city said at least four people had been killed and several more injured.

U.S. Marines Deployed To Sicily To Respond To Any Crisis In North Africa

U.S. Positions Forces In Sicily Over Libya Security Fears -- Reuters

May 14 (Reuters) - The Pentagon said on Wednesday it has temporarily moved nearly 200 Marines to Sicily from their base in Spain as a precaution due to concerns about unrest in North Africa, bolstering the U.S. ability to respond to any crisis.

The Pentagon declined to single out any countries but two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said American concerns were centered squarely on Libya, where armed groups and Islamists refused to disarm after the 2011 ouster of Muammar Gaddafi.

The Marines are part of a crisis response unit focused on embassy security created after the attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012, which killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

That force is meant to speed U.S. response times in north and west Africa.

Just ask any Libyan: Who killed more than 50 police officers, soldiers and judges here and in the eastern city of Darna this year?

Who lit the fire that claimed the lives of U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and another American at the U.S. diplomatic mission here just over a year ago? Who launched the mortar rounds that killed two CIA contractors that same night?

Or, for that matter, who bears responsibility for the 2011 torture and killing of Abdul Fattah Younis, the Gaddafi-era military commander who defected to lead the rebels?

“Do you live on Mars?” asked Hashem Bishr, the hard-line Salafist leader of a powerful Tripoli militia.

To understand Libya’s unsolved murder mysteries, understand this, Bishr said: “It’s just not a good time.”

What he meant is that there are people who know the answers — they’re just not willing to share.

CAIRO — The Libyan government declared a state of emergency in the country's eastern port city of Benghazi Monday after heavy clashes between the Libyan army and members of an Islamist group believed to be behind last year's attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission. At least seven soldiers were reported killed and more than 39 people wounded.

Heavy artillery and rocket fire shook parts of Benghazi Monday as Islamist militiamen continued to battle an army brigade loyal to the government. Libyan government television showed civilian victims of the fighting at a Benghazi hospital being treated for gunshot and shrapnel wounds.

TRIPOLI — At least 10 people were wounded in Tripoli on Friday when militiamen opened fire on hundreds of protesters who had marched on their brigade headquarters to demand that they leave the Libyan capital, a Reuters witness said.

Heavy smoke could be seen from the scene as Libyan police and armed local residents battled to control the militiamen in an area on the road to Tripoli's international airport.

Libyan Autonomy Group Forms Oil Firm, Challenges Government -- Reuters

(Reuters) - An autonomy movement in eastern Libya said on Sunday it had formed a regional oil firm to start selling crude after seizing several ports, mounting a challenge to the government in Tripoli as it struggles to gain control of oil facilities.

The announcement, along with a plan to set up an eastern central bank, is a blow to efforts by Prime Minister Ali Zeidan to reopen oil ports and fields seized by a mix of militias, tribes and civil servants seeking political rights or higher pay.

Output is at a fraction of its capacity of 1.25 million barrels a day and Zeidan said Libya may find it difficult to cover its budget expenditure from next month.

Gun Battles Erupt In Libyan Capital

Western Powers Express Concern at Libyan Political Instability -- Bloomberg Businessweek

The U.S., U.K., France and Italy expressed concern at instability in Libya and called on its people to shun force, after the worst gun battles in months between rival militias in the capital Tripoli left two dead.

The four Western powers said they “reiterate our support to the elected political institutions and call on Libyans to reject any use of force against them,” in a statement posted on the British Foreign Office website today.

Another 29 people were wounded in the fighting in an eastern part of the capital yesterday, the state-run LANA news agency reported on its website today, with militias using anti-aircraft guns and grenades.

Militias Fight Gun Battles In Libyan Capital Tripoli -- Reuters

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libyan militia fighters on the government payroll fought each other with rifles, grenades and anti-aircraft weapons on the streets of Tripoli on Tuesday in the worst clashes in the capital in weeks.

No one was killed, but the fighting underlined how Libya's government is finding it harder to contain former fighters and Islamist militants in a country awash with weapons two years after Muammar Gaddafi's fall.

Strikes and armed protests by militias and tribal gunmen demanding payments or political rights have shut much of the OPEC member's oil output for months and deprived the government of its key source of income.

Fears are growing in Libya of an Egypt-style standoff between the ruling Muslim Brotherhood and opposition forces, with rebels blockading key oil ports and the capital, Tripoli, braced for armed confrontation.

Leaders in the provinces of Cyrenaica and Fezzan are considering breaking away from the centre with rebel militias mobilising across the country.

With oil exports plunging 70%, the government has threatened to use force to capture oil terminals held by armed protesters, raising the risk of civil war.

The capital is tense, with nightly exchanges of gunfire. Diplomats, along with many ordinary Libyans, observe a self-imposed dusk-to-dawn curfew. The president of congress, Nuri Abu Sahmain, has summoned militias allied to the Brotherhood to the capital, deploying troops across the city to forestall what his commanders say is the threat of a coup.

About 1,200 inmates have escaped from a jail in the restive Libyan city of Benghazi.

A security official told the AP news agency that most of the escapees were facing serious charges.

Another report said a riot had taken place inside the al-Kwafiya prison.

The jailbreak comes a day after the assassination of a prominent political activist triggered protests in the city, although it is not clear whether the two are connected.

Benghazi is one of the most unstable parts of post-revolution Libya. Last year the US ambassador and three other Americans were killed there.

On Saturday protesters attacked offices linked to the Muslim Brotherhood following the assassination of the prominent political activist Abdelsalam al-Mismari. Hundreds of mourners attended his funeral.

Militias urged to disband after Libya Shield killed protesters in Benghazi last week, but government lacks means to enforce this

Tucked away inside the battered Benghazi militia base where 31 people were killed in fighting last weekend is its greatest secret – a makeshift prison inside the toilets.

The Libya Shield militia who occupied the base, now pockmarked with bullet and shell holes, had converted toilet cubicles into prison cells, with metal grilles and doors welded on.

Scratched on to the wall of one cubicle are a line of numbers, ending in 147, but police now occupying the base say they don't know what became of the inmates. Until security forces stormed the base, the authorities had no idea the prison existed.

One of Libya's highest military officers has resigned after clashes between protesters and a government-aligned militia he oversaw left 31 people dead in the eastern city of Benghazi.

The army's chief of staff Major-General Youssef al-Mangoush cited the unusually high death toll from the violence in his resignation. Al-Mangoush was due to be replaced soon, and the country's Congress voted in support of accepting his resignation on Sunday.

He was in charge of putting the country's Libya Shield brigades on the government payroll and directing them.

At least another 80 people were wounded when the militia opened fire on protesters gathered outside its base on Saturday.

At least 31 people have died and dozens others have been wounded after protesters attacked the headquarters of a powerful militia alliance in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi, a hospital official has said.

Fighting erupted on Saturday after dozens of demonstrators stormed a base belonging to the Libya Shield brigade, a group of militias with roots in the rebel groups that fought in the country's 2011 civil war, They are tasked with maintaining security and are aligned with the Defence Ministry.

The protesters were demanding that militias leave their camp and submit to the full authority of Libya's security forces.

Benghazi: A huge car bomb exploded near Al-Jala hospital in Benghazi that has left at least 17 people dead, including three children, and 30 injured.

The Libyan Deputy Interior Minister Mr. Abdullah Masaud told reporters earlier that at least 15 were killed in the explosion and more than 30 injured some of them seriously.

Masaud said the number of dead and injured could very well go up.

A large angry demonstration started at Al-Sallani area where the car bomb attack took place and moved to Al-Mahkama Square (Tahrir Square) demanding an end to terrorism and the killing in the city.

The United States and Britain are withdrawing some of the staff from their embassies in Tripoli, Libya because of a standoff between the government and heavily armed militias blockading parts of the capital, embassy officials said Friday.

The move to evacuate non-essential diplomatic personnel comes after a bombing at the French Embassy last month that injured two security gendarmes. In a joint statement issued Wednesday, the United States, Britain and France called on Libyans to “refrain from armed protest and violence during this difficult time in the democratic transition.”

My Comment: A bad situation that is getting progressively unstable. Putting U.S. military units on alert status does not surprise me .... what surprises me is that they are not on the ground in Libya protecting the embassy right now.

My Comment: We helped the rebels to overthrow Gaddafi .... and we then walked away. It is clear that no one was prepared to govern Libya .... and what is worse .... there is little if any interest in the West to rectify the situation. And in this security vacuum we now have Jaihadist groups organizing and establish safe havens. Sighhh .... this is not going to end well.

The oil-producing country was declared "liberated" a few days after Gaddafi's death on October 20, 2011, and while its new rulers have led the nation to elections, they have struggled to impose their authority on a country awash with weapons.

"Our happiness is not complete because there are still some cities that are not fully liberated," said 27-year-old Benghazi shop assistant Baset al-Sharif.
