War Criminals Living Amongst Us

CNN: He's accused of war crimes in Somalia. Now he works security at a U.S. airport.

(CNN)An accused war criminal living in the United States is now working as a security guard at Dulles International Airport near Washington, DC.

A CNN investigation found that Yusuf Abdi Ali, who is accused of committing atrocities while he was a military commander during Somalia's brutal civil war, has been living a quiet life near the nation's capital for about 20 years.

He is just one of more than 1,000 accused war criminals living and working in the United States.

The U.S. Military Has No Legal Basis To Detain A Known African Warlord Who Has Committed Genocide

Craig Whitlock, Washington Post: Detention of African warlord raises legal questions for Pentagon

WNU Editor: This is a fascinating case .... what should the U.S. government/military do when U.S. soldiers are in an Africa country and during the course of their mission they are given a known war criminal who has been accused of committing genocide. From my point of view this is where a place like Guantanamo may become very useful .... where a detainee like this warlord could be put until his international legal status has been determined. But I also know that this is not going to happen ..... Guantanamo is a place that the Obama administration does not want to grow let alone use .... so that is not an option.

Unfortunately .... the debate that we should have on this case has been terminated. U.S. forces handed  Dominic Ongwen to the Ugandan military ..... US gives LRA commander, war crimes suspect to Ugandans (AP), and they are going to hand him to the ICC for trial .... Uganda LRA commander Dominic Ongwen 'to be sent to ICC' (BBC). But the legal murkiness remains, and it will not surprise me if in the next few months the Pentagon's lawyers start to publish opinions, options, and solutions to these legal questions.

On a side note ... the Seleca rebels who captured Dominic Ongwen, and who themselves have been accused of committing atrocities, want the $5 million reward money ..... LRA's Dominic Ongwen 'capture': Seleka rebels want $5m reward (BBC). Sighhh .... now we know why they handed Dominic Ongwen to U.S. soldiers and not to Ugandan or African Union soldiers .... it is all about the money.

'Nearly 100 War Crimes Suspects' In UK Last Year -- BBC

he Home Office last year identified nearly 100 suspected war criminals who had made UK immigration applications, figures released to the BBC suggest.

The majority of cases involved people already likely to have been living in Britain for a number of years.

Suspects originated from countries including Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Rwanda, Serbia and Sri Lanka.

The Home Office says it is determined the UK doesn't become a "refuge for war criminals".

Human rights groups are calling for more criminal prosecutions in Britain as the courts commonly block deportation on human rights grounds if suspects face torture or death in their home country.

The figures emerged from a Freedom of Information request made by the BBC.

The Hunt For Congo's 'Terminator'

Congo's 'Terminator': Kabila Calls For Ntaganda Arrest -- BBC

President Joseph Kabila has said ex-rebel leader Bosco Ntaganda, wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes, must be arrested.

But Gen Ntaganda must be tried in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the president says.

Mr Kabila had previously refused to call for the arrest of the man known locally as "The Terminator".

The ICC indicted him five years ago, for allegedly recruiting child soldiers during DR Congo's bloody five-year war.

Ottawa Releases List Of 30 Most Wanted War-Crimes Suspects -- Globe And Mail

The Conservative government has released a U.S.-style list of Canada’s 30 most-wanted suspected war criminals, part of a flurry of recent political announcements targeting immigration cheats.

The foreigners are now deemed priority targets to kick out of Canada because they “violated human or international rights” in their homelands, according to the list posted online Thursday. The cases, some of which date back 20 years or more, mostly appear to involve failed refugee claimants who went underground after their bids for asylum failed.

With the arrest of Ratko Mladic, Serbia is now under pressure to capture one last remaining alleged war criminal – Goran Hadzic.

Another Tyrant Who Will Soon Be Going To Jail

Charles Taylor stands trial in The Hague, accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Photo: Reuters

WikiLeaks: Charles Taylor May Have $400 Million Out Of Reach -- The Telegraph

Charles Taylor, the former Liberian president, could have as much as $400 million hidden away out of reach of prosecutors, according to leaked US diplomatic cables.

US officials were told that if Mr Taylor is found guilty of war crimes, the international court in The Hague might only be able to recover a fraction of his wealth.

On Friday judges in The Hague adjourned indefinitely the three-year-old trial of Mr Taylor on charges of arming rebels who killed and maimed Sierra Leone citizens.

If they cannot find this war criminal in the heart of Europe, what chance do we have of capturing someone like Osama Bin Laden in the inhospitable and hostile regions along the Afghan/Pakistan border.
