EurAsian Times: Studying US Warfighting Tactics For 30 Years, China Plans To Disrupt US Air Force’s ‘Kill Chain’ & Deflate Its Military 

 In a war with China, the US Air Force (USAF) needs to “make robust” all elements of its ‘kill chains’ that guide ordnance from target identification to engagement since that is what the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will disrupt at various stages. 

This was the common consensus reached by experts and serving retired senior USAF Generals at a webinar held by the Mitchell Institute of Aerospace Studies (MIAS). 

Former USAF deputy chief of staff for operations, Lt Gen Joseph Guastella, now a senior fellow at MIAS; commander of the 57th Wing Brig Gen Richard Goodman; and MIAS senior resident fellow Heather Penny also noted a poor ratio of fifth to fourth generation fighters where the former should be available in sufficient quantities as the latter is “not survivable” in today’s high-end fight.

Forbes: The U.S. Fleet Could Lose Four Aircraft Carriers Defending Taiwan 

The U.S. Navy’s fleet of 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers fared poorly in a series of war games, simulating a Chinese invasion of Taiwan in 2026, that the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. recently organized. 

Even when the United States and Japan successfully defended Taiwan—as they did in most of CSIS’s 24 simulations—the Navy lost at least two carriers ... and sometimes as many as four. 

And it happened fast. “Typically, the United States lost both forward-deployed carriers within the first turn or two,” CSIS analysts Mark Cancian, Matthew Cancian and Eric Heginbotham explained in their summary of the war games. A turn represented 3.5 days of fighting. 

While the carriers were getting blasted by Chinese missiles, the Navy’s nuclear-powered attack submarines and the U.S. Air Force’s heavy bombers not only were dodging Chinese attacks for the most part, they also were managing to sink more than enough Chinese ships to win the war.

CNN: War game suggests Chinese invasion of Taiwan would fail at a huge cost to US, Chinese and Taiwanese militaries 

A Chinese invasion of Taiwan in 2026 would result in thousands of casualties among Chinese, United States, Taiwanese and Japanese forces, and it would be unlikely to result in a victory for Beijing, according to a prominent independent Washington think tank, which conducted war game simulations of a possible conflict that is preoccupying military and political leaders in Asia and Washington. 

A war over Taiwan could leave a victorious US military in as crippled a state as the Chinese forces it defeated. At the end of the conflict, at least two US aircraft carriers would lie at the bottom of the Pacific and China’s modern navy, which is the largest in the world, would be in “shambles.”

Three days after President Joe Biden took office, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force sortied a powerful formation of new H-6K bombers toward Taiwan. 

The same day, the U.S. Navy sailed the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and her escorts into the South China Sea.  

The timing wasn’t a coincidence. The bombers—which are compatible with YJ-12 anti-ship missiles—were training for strikes on carriers such as Roosevelt, Chinese state media explained. 

But in probing Taiwan’s air-defense identification zone, the twin-engine bombers also were preparing for an equally important role—lobbing missiles at Taiwanese forces in preparation for an amphibious assault on the island.
